 | How to Spread a Rumor |
Step 1. Half-hear or half-remember facts.
Step 2. Fill in the blanks of the half you don't recall with speculation
Step 3. Credit but never name a source.
Step 4. Post on a blog.
Now, there's some sub-steps that will help your rumor stick, if that's your desired intent. It's hard to imagine why you'd go to the trouble of crafting a rumor to spread but leave in easy to prove mistakes. Unless you're just not thinking.
Example, this tale of ILM. Okay, let's look at it. Start with a Variety quote on the spin-off of the Model Shop ... yep. Uh huh. Good form. Add the illusion of conspiracy by quoting the original reporter's due dilligence in stating the deal had not gone through yet... mm-hmm... nice touch.
Oh, wait. Sorry. Gonna have to flag you on that third paragraph for egregious ignorance of widely reported fact.
So if ILM never made the move to the Letterman center, and the physical unit is going to be based in San Rafael, that begs the question: Where is the digital arm of ILM going to work out of? What will happen to them?
Well, actually, it was the physical production unit that never made the move. Hundreds upon hundreds of ILM employees that aren't part of the physical unit DID make the move. The lunch room is full of them. I see 'em every day. They worked incredibly long hours leading up to this summer's movie season on such films as Mission Impossible III, Poseidon and Pirates.
And it's not exactly a secret. When the move was made to the Presidio, there were huge articles in the trade describing the new Letterman campus, and how it was revolutionary that ILM, LucasArts and LFL were all under one roof.
But hey, maybe I'm being unfair. After all, the trades. Who reads those? Well, how about two issues ago in Star Wars Insider, there was that big article about the Letterman Digital Arts Center, and how ILM, Arts, and LFL were all together? You'd think that would make it clear.

Wasn't the whole concept behind last year's ILM Christmast card that it was dedicated to the move to San Fran?

Yeah, these things occured to me later, after I'd posted the item and was like 2 seconds from sleep. I remember those articles. I only wish I had remembered before I turned off the computer and went to bed.

Example, this tale of ILM.
Be careful, Pablo, this is how e-drama starts. And we've only just recovered from previous episodes.

wow. kinda harsh, I think. Perhaps there's an assumption by those who live, work and are surrounded by Lucasfilm, ILM etc etc that lay people understand the subtle distinctions on division of work and responsbilities. It's not illogical to assume that with the fanfare accompanying a portion of ILM operations moving to the Philipines / India (!) that there could be misunderstandings about "out sourcing", if that is the crux of the concern about ...rumors. and true, Pablo, the facts are there to read and digest but understanding them as insiders do innately, is probably improbable. Probably.
However if the critcism is leveled at the professionals - reporters in the biz - well, then fire away.

I think it's more a case of T'bone knows better. Or should know better.
I mean, I just linked the thing, and I felt like an idiot. Pro or fan, we all need a kick in the pants sometimes.

Here's the strangest thing... the article doesn't just contradict widely reported fact, it contradicts itself.
Second paragraph, first sentence: "The article states that this physical production unit never made the move to the Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco," emphasis mine.
Third paragraph, first sentence: "So if ILM never made the move to the Letterman center..."
Wait wait wait. Whoever said ILM never made the move? It was the *physical production unit* that never moved. I don't know, maybe it's just a case of rushing through writing an entry and mixing things up in his mind.

Tbone's a friend, and yeah, I guess this is kinda busting his chops a lil bit.
But as Dark Spork says, a little smack on the hand is necessary every now and then, especially if you know you have an audience that reads your material as truth. It's a responsibility thing. I don't think he's actually purposely misleading anyone (like, say, Supershadow), but just needed to give his story a few more once-overs. This just felt like one of those rumors that might grow legs, and I know Tbone wouldn't want to have fingers pointed at him for giving it head's start.

Sort of a Wookieepedian approach. Though I have to say I've done the same sort of thing occasionally due to lack of any sort of sources or replies. I'm generally a little embarassed but am very pleased to change the info to be correct. Only way to learn.

I actually don't mind making mistakes, because I am always thrilled to be corrected. After all it means folks are reading my site...
I think sometimes you take various rumours and extrapolate results, but then I have never claimed to be either
1- 100% correct 100% of the time
OR
2- Supershadow's protege.
Nothing I report as news on Lightsabre is intende dto be false, or malicious. 99% comes from other sites, but the news section of my site is just a small part of it. Interviews and fan fiction is the bulk of the site.

But on another point, I just interviewed JW Rinzler last week (smashing guy to talk to, interview hits Lightsabre in late August) and he was speaking from The Presidio, so along with ILM, Arts, and LFL you can add Lucasbooks to that list Pabs.
Top blog as ever sir, I look forward to one day adding you to our ever-growing interview list (Leah, right above has been a guest, Abel Pena is coming soon)
