Addicted to Buying (Yet Not Watching) DVDs
UPDATED WITH COMMENT FEEDBACK: (See below)

Clearly, I've got a problem. Buying DVDs takes less time than watching them, obviously. A look at what's on my shelf (to be fair, some of these are girlfriend's, but percentage-wise, it's barely a blip)...

I don't want to do the math of what the retail value of these are, or else I would collapse crying.

COMMENT FEEDBACK:

And you own King Kong? I was under the impression you hated that movie.

I do. I own several movies I hate, if only because there's a part of them I do enjoy. I rarely pay full price for those, though. I mean, Pearl Harbor is on the list.

wow....Have you even watched half of them?

As far as movies go, yes, I have. Last year, I made a point of watching them, alphabetically, for some reason, just as a way of getting through them and figuring out which ones I really wanted to keep. It's taken a year, and I'm into the T's.

What, no Superman II? And you call yourself a geek.

I knew there had to be a better version coming out. In that case, I excercised restraint.

See, I know I could easily be like this, too, but I have that segment of my brain that says, when I'm in a store looking at DVDs, "Wait a minute! Are you really going to watch this?" Plus, ignoring the money issue, have you actually added up how many hours it would take for you to watch all of this, and compare it to your life expectancy?

I've only just learned that lesson with books and comics. At least with books, there's legitimate downtime that I can read in -- like on the bus to work. What else is there to do but read? I need a DVD player in the shower or something.

The Transformers: The Movie: I love you. Can I come over some time?

And there's a new version coming out in November! Guess who's buying it day one?

Whoa. How many cinematic interpretations of Hamlet must one man own?

What can I say? I'm a Shakespeare fanboy too.

And people have the gall to criticize George Lucas...

I know, Stooge. I never had much sympathy for the double-dipping complaint, because in the span of time it takes me read such a complaint, I've already bought three more DVDs. ;)

And dude, Gremlins 2 kicks butt! Excellent!

It does. I will adamantly defend Gremlins 2 and Ghostbusters 2. While I won't claim they're superior to the original, they are still darn entertaining.

Sadly, half of what you own is in my collection.

I don't want to do the math of what the retail value of these are, or else I would collapse crying.

Then don't read the following:

This is your last warning!

Okay: 386 DVDs at $19.95 each is $7,700.70 worth of movies. Wow. :p Sorry, I like math. :8}

I warned you! :p

My DVD collection is: all the Star Wars DVDs except the 2005 DVD release of the OT. They are all in widescreen, if available, and include the cartoons and other releases.

But seriously, you should let people rent your DVDs or something. $1 per movie. That'll give Hollywood Video or Blockbuster a run for their money.;) You'll turn quite a profit.

Yeah... I have a bunch of discs that are still wrapped since I bought them, which could be up to a year or so ago, but generally I try to watch them within the week of getting them. Otherwise, it's shelfsville. The cheap two for one kung fu classics from the dollar store have bulked my collection out a bit.

But I don't know if I can begin to compare my collection to this one. It makes me almost collapse crying thinking about trying to best it.

Pabwan: You're making fun of me!

You should listen to Japanese Fett's first reply: I too had an extensive DVD-collection in the past and realized there was no way I could continue it without jeoperdizing my SW books & comics collection (the wife and kids gotta eat, y'know). So I sold everything off and started anew with only the ones I really want (all-things-Muppet, a few good moveis and tv-series)...

Amen on the Ghostbusters (and Gremlins, for that matter). When I was younger, I actually liked Ghostbusters 2 better than the original; though I've since grown out of that, I still find it quite fun.

And come on. In the first movie, they beat the Big Bad by crossing the streams. In the second, they beat the Big Bad with Force-sensitive goo and New Yorkers singing! Tell me that's not a better ending.

Well, all I know is that Pablo and I share the same addiction. Every time I say I'm going to stop buying films that I'm not sure about and join Netflix, DeepDiscountDVD sends me some insane "DVDs as low as $5.98!" offer and I'm off the wagon again! But I do have at least a small pile to bring to blockbuster to get credit for (or sell on Ebay) so I'm getting better.

The justification for owning great films is that even if you don't get to watch them right away, you know they're there when you want them. If you're up to the 'Ts' then you're doing fine! I say keep up the good work!
