 | These Are the Gowns You're Looking For |
Hello everyone here in blogsille Man, it has been a while since I have written anything here
I hope that everyone had a great summer!! It is so hard to believe that the Fall season is just around the corner...where has the time gone ?! It seems just like yesterday I was making plans to attend CIV...and now that has come and gone. I had a pretty busy summer, hence part of the reason for my extended relative absence from this site. I have been lurking around, reading the occasional entry and leaving the occasional comment.
I am coming up on my two-year anniversary as a Hyperspace member, and nearing a year and a half of blogging here. Time surely has flown by!! So much has changed in these past two years, and I am forever grateful for all that has happened and for all of the wonderful people I have met. My life has been all the richer for them...both bloggers and fellow costumers alike.
It has also been nearly two years since I took my first steps into the greater world of costuming. Who knew that those first stitches I did for the first time in years would turn into such a wonderful hobby...rather, obsession . I loved the feeling of seeing a project reach completion...seeing what the hours of hard work and dedication helped to create. I was hooked. I wanted to do more costumes, more elaborate costumes, so... Padme's Closet was begun (this is just a portion of everything...I have fabric and supplies literally everywhere).
Since my last entry, detailing the events of CIV in costume, I have completed several more costumes. I took a short break from sewing after my return from the con...mostly because of a sense of burn-out from all of the work I had done. However, it was not long before I got back into the swing of sewing again...but this time, I worked on some relatively "simple" projects (i.e. little detailing involved). Here are some updates on what I have accomplished this summer (and before everyone asks...that is a fake pregnancy belly under the ROTS costumes):
Veranda Nightgown
My first task was tackling this gown...finishing the revisions I had begun before CIV. I had been having problems figuring out the back drape and how to get the "fall"just right. I played around with that for a while, and finally figured it out!! I then added a fancy trim to the front and sides so as to mimic the stitching on the real gown. Here are some pics of the final revisions. I still need to fix an errant strand of pearls, but the gown is officially finished!!
Dressing Robe and Gown
I had always liked this robe Padme' wears in ROTS. When conducting my research, I discovered there actually is a gown/dress beneath the robe!! I made the headpiece out of craft foam, and painted it with a silver metallic acrylic paint (~15 coats to get the right effect). The pony-tail holders were made from clay, and painted with the same acrylic paint used on the headpiece. This costume is very comfortable, but warm...definitely a winter-time event costume this will be
Mustafar Re-Do
I was never completely satisfied with my first version of the Mustafar outfit, so I decided to re-do it. I found a resin version of the brooch and buckle, bought leather strips for the straps, and got new fabric for the top and pants. I'm still not 100% happy with it, but it will do for now.
Ewok Village Dress
This is one dress I had on my ** would like to do someday** list...but I decided to move it up to now. I am so glad I did...it is amazingly comfortable!! The only thing I need to do with it is to adjust the shoulders...they keep sliding down
Classic Leia
This also was on my ** would like to do someday** list, but was, like the Ewok Village dress, moved up to this summer. After seeing so many of these gowns at CIV, I decided that I just had to have one...and soon Again, I wondered why I waited so long to make this. I found the blaster on e-bay, and just needed to de-activate the sound effects (i.e. remove the batteries ) and spray paint it black. I will officially be premiering this at the Autism Speaks Walk Now event/walk at the end of the month!!
Navy Linen Dress with Shawl
This is another dress I have loved since the first time I saw it on screen. I, like many, believed it to be black...however, it really is a deep navy blue. The most difficult part of this costume for me was the belt...very tricky stitching those bead strands onto the felt I glued onto the back of the jewels. I love wearing this one, too, as it is also very comfortable
"Leia Buns" Cloak
This is my newest costume (second only to the one mentioned above)...yet to be submitted to the Rebel Legion for approval. This actually is part of a "2-in-1" costume with the Navy Linen Dress...this dress actually is seen under the cloak in promo pics!! The only problem I have with the cloak is the way it drapes across my chest...it drapes much better on my dress-form. Oh well...it still works
OK...now that i have bored you all with these details, I want to share one last thing...I just love how the Rebel Legion uses photoshop for the official pics]!!

I know...cheessy, but I do love it. It makes it feel a bit more "real," since I do try and do the promo poses in my photos. I truly am excited to begin participating in events with my fellow Rebel Legion Base members. I will be appearing in a relatively small event this weekend and in a larger one, the Autism Walk, in two weeks. I have a feeling that I will fit in just fine
Phew...this was a "mouth-full" of information. I hope you all at least enjoyed reading about and seeing my progress in this endeavor. I now officially have ** ten** approved costumes by the Rebel Legion!! What I have planned for the remainder of the year are the Tatooine Poncho that Padme' wears in AOTC and the "Green" Velvet Gown from ROTS. I have a few things in mind already for next year...but I think I'll wait to reveal those at another time
Well...it is time for this Padme' to get some sleep since I worked all night. I just wanted to get this entry posted before resting for a few hours. I will get back to everyone once I am awake again. Have a wonderful weekend!! Remember, the Force Will Be With You...Always

Anyway. Padme's closet is amazing. i thought that you must be a seamstress, but these costumes are a hobby! Wow.
I LOVE all of your... I hate calling them costumes, I'll 2nd what Mof2 calls the, works of art. Your photos, where you reproduce the original poses--I love those too.
I can't wait to see the Green Velvet reproduction--it will look fabuloso with your red hair, and of course, the poncho!!!! I love the poncho.

Thanks everyone!!
I am always my worst critic when it comes to looking at my work...but I will say that I believe I have improved my skills so much throughout this entire process. I'm saving some of the more difficult ones for down the road
Best of luck with this. It's a great cause.
Thanks However, I may be working at our water table since my little "ankle incident" about a month ago (still bothers me)
If I ever was to do a costume, this would be it. It's my style, and it looks so comfy!
I've heard it's very comfy...and I can't wait to get to it

My you've been a busy little sewing bee!!!
I guess that's what happens when it's been too hot to do anything outside, and when one works night shift and cannot get to sleep until the wee hours of the morning on nights off
I love the original Leia costume! Looks very comfy!!
It is I just need to make sure I secure the buns to my head enough...they kept wanting to fall out
You know I love the rest as well, but I've commented on most of them before!
Yes I do...and I know I just haven't had time to update on the latest adventures

I can't believe how busy you've been!!!! That is amazing. I think you're going to end up setting a record for the most costumes completed in the Rebel Legion. Seriously, are you going to make them all? It looks like you could with the way you're going.
You look beautiful my dear. If I were you I'd so just wear those around my house with the SW music playing in the background. I love how you show a bit of leg in the Ewok village dress.
And...the official pics are not cheesy. They are awesome! I want copies of them if it's ever possible to get one!

Girl, I'm just amazed at your talent. I know I told you Friday night when we swere chatting, that I'd get over here to check them out, sorry I lagged there but so glad I made it!
You know I've never gotten into sewing, not my stick, but I do have certain hobbies in which I partake, that I can understand your passion/ obsession with yours. Working hard, putting a lot of time and effort into it, overcoming the challenges, and then reaching the end successfully give ya such an awesome feeling, right? On top of the world kinda thing!

WOW!
What an understatement that is! All I can say is that I am in awe of what you have been able to complete.
WOW!
ps, I have to say that you're an inspiration. There are so many costumes that I'd like to try, and . . . one of these days . . . I'm going to. I've tried a couple in the past (you should have seen how fast I whipped up a rebel pilot's and Leia's ceremonial gown when my padawans came home from school one day and exclaimed, "Mom, tomorrow is Star Wars day. Can you make us costumes?" How could the two biggest SW fans in school not have costumes to wear?! )
(cont. . .)

(cont. . .)
but they were meager at best!
Anakin's and (ewan's) Obi-wan Jedi garb have followed, as has Padme's Lake Dress (I won't even go there where that one is concerned . . . but if you ever decide to tackle that one, I have some hints that I would be only too happy to share.)
Now padawan # 2 wants a uniquely designed bounty hunter's costume. With armor! That should be interesting!!!
You know what, though, ps?

(the end . . . finally )
Like I said, you really are an inspiration. One of these days, I will tackle a costume for myself. Maybe for CV (maybe if we talk about it enough it will become reality ). Your costumes are absolutely wonderful, and while I am not up to your skill, it's time I gave it a whirl!
Which one, though? That is the biggest decision!
I have to say, I love the fact that you have dubbed one of your closets. Perfection! Padme's Closet. I LOVE IT!!!
Happy Sewing!

WOW! You are have stupendous talent! But of course, it is fostered out of love for Star Wars. Actually I think I have seen you in costume (s) at C3, C4 or ??? I remember the red hair.
Have you ever considered a dark side costume? I have a Jedi tunic, robe, etc. that a friend has helped make look more official (since I have no talent at all in sewing, etc.) but I've secretly harbored a desire to also join the 501st yet none of the dark side costumes appeal to me - The officers look very official but........they're almost like ...clones. No spiritual artistic expression at all.
How wonderful to be young and tuned into Star Wars. Bravo!
