Okay, so I purchased thet LEGO
Indiana Jones game, and while not as entertaining and funny as the LEGO
Star Wars games, it's still great fun.
But there's one thing I don't get. I'd heard about it before I bought the game, and already then I didn't get it. What happened to the Nazis? Well, the characters are there, they have the same names as the Nazi characters in the movies, and they kind of look like the Nazis in the movies. Yet, there's not mention of Nazis at all in the game. No Nazi symbols or anything. Instead of being referred to as Nazis, they're called "enemy soldiers" (at least in the Danish language version of the game).
I'm wondering why. It's inconsistent, because the Thugees of
Indy II are called 'Thugees' in the game, so why not call the Nazis 'Nazis' since that's what they are? What's the point?
The only reason I can think of is that the real Nazis were too evil to be included in a family-friendly game. They certainly are the epitome of evil to most people. Maybe LEGO/LucasArts/Tt Games wanted to spare the kids from references to such evil, but isn't that just a way to distort historical facts? Not that there's any factuality about
Indy, but the Nazis did exist, and they did commit a bunch of horrible things (as did the Thugees, by the way, but apparently they were not evil enough to be censored out of the game).
Why censor out something that is a historical fact. Something that has been an important factor in modern world history? Something that should never happen again? It's like saying that Naziism and the things the Nazis did never took place, and the question is, who benefits from that? I'd say, the wrong people, if any.
Besides, the Nazis being the epitome of evil to most people, it is a much more powerful plot device to have them as adversaries (that's probably why the Soviets in
Indy IV did not work out as well as the Nazis, because the Soviets were never conceived of as being as evil as the Nazis were). Removing the whole Nazi-thing from the game seems to take away some of the good vs. evil of the original trilogy.
So why not just call these 'enemy soldiers' Nazis, because that's what they are.
