 | Scraping the bottom of the eBay barrel |
So occasionally I'm tempted to venture out to the uncharted realms of eBay just to see if there's any Star Wars out there. Checking out the landscape, it's clear that it's pretty much infiltrated every sector of the map. Here are a handful of categories with the number of Star Wars title hits:
Bears (2) - Nope, not Ewoks -- a couple of paintable plaster figurines from the Jedi era.
Model RR, Trains (1) - The first of many examples of slacker salesmanship. This one's for the Clone Wars GameCube.
Militaria (117) - ok, with "Wars" in the title I guess we should expect a few hits here.
Tobacciana (30) - As you'd guess, mostly unlicensed merchandise
Fantasy, Mythical & Magic (14) - For those who think Willow exists in the Star Wars universe
Barware (3) -- I was at a loss initially, until I'd remembered the "beverage" steins that were marketed with Star Wars graphics a few years ago.
Knives, Swords & Blades (3) -- Yes, some actually try to sell lightsabers in this category.
Breweriana, Beer (4) -- Of the four listed items, 2 are soft-drink related. Have a Bud and a smile, I guess
Animals (1) -- Live Ewok for sale? No, actually just a set of unauthorized notecards depicting pets in Star Wars duds
Religions, Spirituality (1) -- My favorite find of the day, the "Christian SF" comic #2, depicting a cantina-esque alien holding the head of Darth Vader on the cover. From the description copy: **The Bible is the ultimate STAR WARS story!** Probably blew my chance at getting this on the cheap by posting here. Oh well, too good to keep to myself.
Weird Stuff (13) - Ok, just plain lazy
Mystery Auctions (2) - Can you say, LAZY?!
Gardening & Plants (1) -- Thought I happened on a cool Yoda planter or something, but turned out to be some slouch selling a U.S. flag. Jeez.
eBay Motors (14) - Nope, not the long lost Star Wars Sweepstakes Celica from 1977. Just a bunch of unauthorized window decals. Tempted to pick up the "ToYoda" one for my pickup...
Musical Instruments (13) - I'd forgotten about those cool Fernandez guitars from awhile back.
Antiques (3) - Had no idea Star Wars had been with us for 100 years already.
Travel (1) - Would you believe someone's actually trying to sell a Darth Maul backpack in this category? And we're talking the kind that will hold a couple textbooks and a sack lunch, not a tent and bedroll.
Printing & Personalization (11) - Uh, if you're going to peddle unauthorized items, don't you think you'd be smart enough to sell in a category that doesn't call out the fact from the get-go?
Anyway, check out the eBay fringe from time to time for either good deals or amusement - with ebay, there never seems to be a shortage of either.
Pete
