Entry # 3: Plot Holes DO NOT Exist! |
Why is it that people post comments and questions to these boards without doing any research first? Seriously, have some of you ever even seen Star Wars? No, really, have you? And what about paying attention when they are playing? Have you ever done that? Have you ever even removed them from the plastic they are wrapped in?
But I digress. What really got to me was a posting by one of my fellow bloggers about plot holes in the Star Wars movies. I will not mention his/her name or the name of his/her blog, but I will let you all know that it was posted on the Star Wars homepage under the blog link, so I'm sure a lot of you have read it.
Let me start out by saying that I, among very few others, am a firm believer that there are NO plot holes in the Star Wars saga. There is nothing, I repeat, NOTHING, that contradicts anything else. Oh, it may appear that way to some of you who have not taken the time to answer your own questions by searching the saga for those specific answers. And, as I stated in Entry # 1 of my blog, pay attention to the EU for answers as well. I can not stress this point enough. Get ready, this is a long one!
OK. Let's get into it. First of all a plot hole would be something that is brought up in the movie, has something to do with THE PLOT, and is NEVER answered. Some of you believe that Darth Sidious' second Lightsaber is a plot hole. "Well if the first one fell to the depths of Coruscant when Sidious fought Mace Windu, how did he have it back when he fought Yoda later on in the Senate chamber?" This is not a plot hole. The existence of a second Lightsaber brandished by Darth Sidious plays no importance in the process of moving the movie along. This would be like saying that, "Nobody ever goes to the bathroom in Star Wars, but they would have had to at some point. That must be a plot hole." Of course they had to pee, but does it move the story along? NO! The reason Sidious had a second Lightsaber is because he needed it to fight Yoda, period. Also, he was a smart guy. I think it is more that possible that Sidious constructed a second Lightsaber just in case. Think about it, you have more that one fork at home, don't you? In case one gets dirty, you've got a backup. Same goes for Sidious' saber; he had a backup. I don't understand why this is such a huge subject in these blogs, it is a non-issue.
Another point made by the mystery blogger was that Sidious would have to run and quickly change into the guise of Palpatine whenever he needed to contact someone as either person. What a stupid observation! I am not even going to justify this stupidity with a response other than the fact that, as both Sidious and Palpatine, he was a man of power and respect, and people would have waited for him.
Next, Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Luke, "You will learn from Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me." This is a true statement. Obi-wan was not losing his mind, he was simply certain-point-of-viewing it to Luke again. Do you remember when Yoda was teaching the Bear Clan some base Lightsaber forms at the Jedi Temple in Episode II? Being the oldest living Jedi in the Order, and an instructor at the Academy, every Jedi alive at the time had, more than likely, learned something from Master Yoda. Yes, Qui-Gon Jinn took Obi-Wan as a Padawan, but not until he was almost 13 standard (Read the Jedi Apprentice series by Dave Wolverton/Jude Watson).
Another issue brought up was the fact that on the Tantive IV, C-3PO calls Leia "Princess", but later on Tatooine, he claims not to know the girl in the hologram. This one is so simple it hurts. R2 and 3PO were picked up by Jawas, remember? The shocks they received (and it is assumed the Jawas shocked 3PO as well as R2) were enough to rattle away part of their recent memory cores. This one really makes me wonder if some have seen the movies.
Fifthly, it was stated that in the few hours it took Han and the others to get from Hoth to Bespin, Luke made it to Dagobah, was trained as a Jedi and made it to Bespin to rescue his friends. YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! I'm sorry, but is it not understood that these movies can encompass more time than what they actually run in the theater or on our DVD players?!? If we follow this line of thinking to an end, then some fool out there would assume that night on Hoth would only be around five minutes long because of the amount of real time that elapsed between when Luke was injured by the Wampa, and when the scout party found him and Han. This is one of those ideas that physically hurt me.
Lastly, the mystery of the Force Ghosts. If you are wondering how Anakin was able to retain his identity, read the Databank entry (next to last paragraph). Also, I believe the reason he returns in his younger form, is that you retain the identity you had as a true Jedi. Yoda and Obi-Wan where always true Jedi and therefore would have appeared as they did when they died. The same goes for Anakin. He 'died' when he was 22 standard. This was also the last time he was a true Jedi. Finally, if you read the novel of Episode III, it explains that Qui-Gon was never able to personally maintain his form, only his connection to the living world. Again, the EU is all important.
Some other points I feel I must make on "plot holes" are as follows;
Owen Lars was NEVER told 3PO's designation when he purchased the droid from the Jawas nor anytime thereafter which explains why "Owen doesn't remember 3PO". Watch the scenes again!
Leia remembers Padme because it is simply the will of the Force, enough said.
Maybe I have closed the book on some of the, for lack of a better word, dumb ideas expressed so profusely on these boards. If some of you simply take the time to pay attention, the answers to so many of your questions will be found.
May the Force be with you!
