Independence Day
The 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays, as it celebrates freedom. It's a day set aside to remember the Revolutionary War. Like the Rebel Alliance, those who fought in the Revolutionary War fought for freedom from fear and oppression. They fought so that Americans could have the freedom to express themselves in word and in print and to practice whatever religion they wished (or not), without fear of repercussion. They fought for the inalienable rights of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".*

The Rebels' similar cause of fighting for freedom is part of what drew me into SW in the first place. I vehemently believe in freedom from oppression, and GL put that struggle up on screen in a masterful way that really touched my heart.

In these times of gobal strife, it's important to remember the struggles of everyone who fought, and still fight, for freedom. I'd like to wish all those who celebrate the American Independence Day a safe and happy holiday.

Hey there my friend, it's been a while...

When I think of that quote I'm reminded of when Padme says, "So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause." I hope that day never happens. I love this country, everything it represents and the men and women who gave their lives for it.

Happy Independence day!

PS: You have to choose, Ewan or Hayden! There is no inbetween. If you choose Hayden, I'll let you in on a juicy story. :x

Nice work. The fourth is very special to me. I love to remember the challenges that faced those everyday folks back then. It is hard to imagine a small conglomerate of colonies took it to the mighty Empire, er I mean British. When you really look at what they faced (the Patriots) its amazing they came through. Who knows what would have happened if the British won. I still think freedom would have won out eventually, but our History would be bleaker than it is.

Let Freedom Ring!

The time when the story comes out is very important on the social psyche, too. In the late 70s, the Americans were questioning what they were all about. The failure in Vietnam, the rise of fundamentalist terrorism, increasing energy costs, the ever-popular "stag-flation," unemployment, the Fed's "Saturday Night Special," and a slew of other things making the citizes question what it means to be an American.

SW, and in particular ANH, in grand terms and broad strokes reminded us all. It's terms immediately became part of of language and made us all want to "do the right thing" and fight the "dark side" (even though we didn't really know much about the dark side at that point in time).

Happy 4th!

I would agree jkelly and even lump in the original Superman there too. Right when we as a nation were thinking we were confused about who we were Superman comes in and defines if for us.

"Truth, Justice, and the American Way".

The fight agains the Empire and a man in a red cape able to leap tall buildings really helped America bring back those true patriotic feelings again.
