Light My FIre
Fire - destructive, redemptive, a symbol of transformation and purification. It is prevalent throughout the SW saga: Fire destroys Luke's home and family, setting in motion his journey to discovering the Force; it "destroys" Anakin Skywalker, resulting in his physical transformation into Darth Vader; and it is used ceremoniously in Jedi funerals.

In nature, fire is represented by specific climates and forces of nature. The natural environment that represents fire is the desert, which is associated with purification*. It's important that both Anakin and Luke lived in a desert, as Anakin is purified, or redeemed, by Luke. Another natural phenomena that represents fire is lightning*, which is used by the Sith as a display of their destructive dark side power.

Fire is often used to symbolize human emotions. In his book Psychoanalysis of Fire, Gaston Bachelard states about fire: "It can go back down into the substance and hide there, latent and pent-up, like hate and vengeance".* In the scenes at Mustafar, fire and lava conjure the image of Hell and are used to symbolize what Anakin is going through - he is rage and vengeance personified as he's consumed by flames and screams his hatred at Obi-Wan. "Characters that have a 'fire-esq' quality to them are likely to be violent (extreme and chaotic) in their response and more likely to rush into a situation without completely thinking the consequences through".** This describes Anakin perfectly. He is passionate, extreme and impulsive; the decisions he made leading up to his confrontations with Padme and Obi-Wan on Mustafar, along with the statements he made to them there, reflect those characteristics ("I can overthrow him"..."If you're not with me, you're against me").

Another emotional and symbolic use of fire is the Jedi ritual of cremation in their funeral ceremonies. According to Buddhism, which influenced GL when he created the spirituality of the Jedi, "the cremation ground is regarded as the breeding ground for the virtues of fearlessness and other heroic virtues. And in this way, for such reasons as this, the cremation ground comes to be regarded as a sort of spiritual centre...as a place for the development of heroic virtue, heroic emotions, heroic spiritual attitudes...The cremation ground...is a symbol of transformation...of one's whole being from the depths right up to heights, a symbol of the transformation of the whole system of consciousness".*** The Jedi could certainly be viewed as heroic and spiritual and as being able to attain multiple levels of consciousness. In addition, Vader's funeral pyre has its own symbolism: the return of Anakin to the Light, and the redemption of a father by his son.

We see a more jubilant use of fire in ROTJ. The rebels and the Ewoks dance around a bonfire, and fireworks explode throughout the galaxy to celebrate the rebels' victory over evil.

It's significant that fire is used symbolically and literally throughout SW, which is a saga about heroism, spirituality, passion, and transformation.

Stay cool. B-)

Nicely done, Ehfy! I really like your analogies and the instances you brought out concerning fire and the GFFA.

At long last.... the "fire" blog! It was worth the wait. :)

In addition, Vader's funeral pyre has its own symbolism: the return of Anakin to the Light, and the redemption of a father by his son.

Mmmm... I like that. Great symbolism right there.

"Characters that have a 'fire-esq' quality to them are likely to be violent (extreme and chaotic) in their response and more likely to rush into a situation without completely thinking the consequences through".**

Maybe that's why I like Hoth so much..... I've always been much more like Anakin... too impulsive and headstrong (ie bad temper!).... I've cooled off a lot in recent years.

Stay cool.

Always do.... B-)

Very nice entry :) Hot, indeed ;)

It always amazes me the connections and symbolism present in our beloved saga...and this is just another part of that amazement. You did a wonderful job connecting the symbolism behind fire and the events/characters in SW...much of this I did not know.

In addition, Vader's funeral pyre has its own symbolism: the return of Anakin to the Light, and the redemption of a father by his son.

Very powerful, indeed!!

Wow - impressive....most impressive! :D

I've never really thought about the use or symbolism of fire in the SW saga, but like most everything else, GL has found a way to incorporate myth, legend, symbolism and theory into the storylines.

"Characters that have a 'fire-esq' quality to them are likely to be violent (extreme and chaotic) in their response and more likely to rush into a situation without completely thinking the consequences through".** This describes Anakin perfectly Excellent!

It's important that both Anakin and Luke lived in a desert, ah, yes....!

I also remember seeing a character analysis similar to this of Padme in the History Channel special (did you see this one?) - they likened her character to the planet Naboo - the "earth mother:" abundant, lush, beautiful, providing life...! It all makes sense if you think about it!

Fuego...like us hispanics who have a lot of fire in our blood. Nice entry. I used to be a lot like Anakin but age has a way of cooling a person off meaning I use my brain more and not my emotions.

Hot indeed! This was a fantastic entry, f5! I absolutely loved the symbolism of the fire and funeral pyre. I wonder if Literature teachers in the future will be asking their students about the symbolism of the funeral pyre in ROTJ?

Just random things I think about. :D

*fans self*

Is it hot in here or what? :D

What great thoughts! Fire is such an all-encompassing element, and the foundation of human creativity. We would have nothing that we have in modern civilization if it weren't for humans discovering how to harness fire. Crazy!

I love the Buddhist concepts. In cremation, the body really does become one with the universe. Ashes go back to the ground and join solid elements, and the smoke rises to join the ethereal. Neat stuff.

This is a wonderful entry, my friend! :x

This describes Anakin perfectly.

I'll say! Like fire, his situation gets waaaaay out of control & fast!

Anakin "lights our fire" in multiple ways, huh?;):^O

The natural environment that represents fire is the desert, which is associated with purification*.
Wow. Now THAT is one incredible connection!

Vader's funeral pyre has its own symbolism
That to me is one of the most beautiful, pure moments of the whole Saga. Luke has finally learned what it means to be a true Jedi (and son) while Anakin's prison of a shell is being destroyed forever.

*sniff* Gets me every time...

Ever since ROTS, I've always thought that fire was a great metaphor for Ani's personality.

Very powerful, indeed!!
One of the most powerful scenes of the saga.

character analysis similar to this of Padme in the History Channel special (did you see this one?)
I did see it ,and I thought the earth mother"comparison was right "on target".

Same here but I'm still working on the cooling off thing. :D

Me too! Any excuse to watch SW!

I wonder if Literature teachers in the future will be asking their students about the symbolism of the funeral pyre in ROTJ?
Great question! There are already a couple of SW classes in colleges. The more the merrier!

I love the Buddhist concepts.
I thought those were fascinating. GL incorporated so much of Buddhism into SW, I'm learning a lot about it.

Anakin "lights our fire" in multiple ways, huh?
Yeah he does! :x

THAT is one incredible connection!
Fascinating! I had no idea about that connection until I started researching for this blog.

Really great thoughts here. I've also thought about the importance of fire in the saga, and how it's been used to both forge and purify Anakin / Darth Vader's existence. Even Palpatine used fire somewhat (if you can count lightning!)
Great entry!

Absolutely wonderful essay, e&hf5! Provacative. Meaningful. Really gets me thinking.

There is so much subtext (okay, some of it is rather blatant) in Star Wars. I always am fascinated by other fans' takes and interpretations of what transpires on the many levels. Quite frankly, I don't understand people who claim Star Wars is purely one-dimensional.

Truly wonderful, my friend! Keep these great thoughts coming! :D

That's what's so interesting. The symbolism of fire is so dichotomous, as is Anakin/Vader.

I don't understand people who claim Star Wars is purely one-dimensional.
Me neither. I've never heard anyone say that it's one-dimensional, but if I do, I'll have to have a loooong talk with them. ;

Wow.

I'm late to the discussion, but this is an amazing analysis. I've always known that Lucas wasn't credited for the depth of symbolism and mythology incorporated into his saga, but this takes it to a whole new level.

Nicely done.

depth of symbolism and mythology incorporated into his saga
I'm amazed that after all these years and viewings, I still find new symbolism. I think some of the symbolism may not even have been intentional, but I agree with you that GL deserves the credit for most of it. He's amazing!

Nicely done.

Thanks dz23. As a daughter of 2 parents who are teachers, I'm flattered! The saga is so full of symbolism, I find something new every time I watch one of the movies.

It was good meeting you too. I had so much fun yesterday, I miss everyone already!
