 | Out of the Mouths of Babes |
My daughter is on Spring break and is going on a field trip with the park district. When I dropped her off this morning, they had a TV and DVD player set up while they were waiting for everyone to arrive. Well, what should be playing but ROTS!! And at the very beginning! The only kids watching it was a group of boys about 8-10 years old. Being that I was early for work, I of course decided to stay for a few minutes and watch.
During the opening battle when Obi and Ani start their banter, one of the older boys shouted, "You're old school, Obi-Wan! Old school!" I tell you, I was somewhere between laughing and wanting to smack the kid. How dare he insult my Obi!
It's interesting to see the perspective of this generation of kids. Being raised on the OT myself, I think the attraction of SW for kids was the action and the clearly defined battle between good & evil. I think this generation of kids likes the PT mostly for the action, since good and evil are a bit muddled. But what that boy said made me realize that there's no respect for the wisdom of experience. Ani had power, arrogance, and impatience, and that makes for cool battles. But in addition to power, Obi had the patience and wisdom of experience. Remember, he was the "Negotiator". Those traits might not make for a cool battle, but they sure could bring about peace more quickly.
When I was a kid, I don't remember if I respected age and experience either. But now as an adult and a mother, I've realized how important that is, and it's something I'd like to teach my daughter. And SW would be a great tool to do that.
It was hard to pull myself away from the movie (and my daughter! )and head to work, but we gotta do what we gotta do. I just might have to watch it tonight.

How cool! That ROTS would be chosen as the film to show kids while waiting for a field trip speaks volumes of its appeal!
Interesting entry, e&hf5! I probably could have shouted the same thing to Obi-wan, too, though! In fact, I thought you were going to comment on what an astute observation that was! Really. And Obi-wan was being "old school"...and...and...(more)...

I do get your point! The lines between good and evil are too often blurred, especially these days. One thing, though, I find that those lines get more blurred as I get older, not less so. Experience might tell me that this always turns out right or that always turns out wrong, but the reasons that motivate people to do what they do always seem to fall somewhere in the middle of pure "right" or "wrong." It just isn't that easy...Obi-wan...
I hope you get to watch ROTS!!!!

Ahem.... YOUR Obi? hee-hee
But what that boy said made me realize that there's no respect for the wisdom of experience.
Nope, they're kids, they want ACTION! One of favorite sayings is "It's amazing how much smarter your parents get as YOU get older" and that's even more true for grandparents...

I would not have expected anything less!
How dare he insult my Obi!
How dare he indeed! Luke (you know my penchant for our favorite farmboy ) may be the strongest Jedi, but O-w was the greatest. He was stronger than Anakin ever could be. Why don't these kids get it???
Those traits might not make for a cool battle
Cool heads prevail, especially in battle! Obi-wan proved that quite decidedly when he finally had to face off against Anakin.

Yeah. Yoda may be my favorite Jedi, but Obi-Wan was very good, more so than he's often given credit for.

Aye, Obi-Wan's wisdom made him a great Jedi. You know, "There's no school like old school." At least I think that's how it goes. It's an old person saying. I'm just kiddin'.
It was hard to pull myself away from the movie (and my daughter! )and head to work
You should have stayed and watched it, your boss would understand.

OLD SCHOOL???? Didja smack him upside the head??? lolzzz
Like JMW so wisely stated above. Obi-wan was the greatest Jedi. Ever. Period. He's the only one who could keep a cool head. He never acted impulsively and always put duty and the well being of others first. He treated everyone with respect. There's some good learnin' right there, I tell ya!
Sheesh.... punks today... :::rolling eyes Ydacon:::
BTW, how did you pull yourself away???

there's no respect for the wisdom of experience Whew...I think the older I get the more true that statement gets!! Kids will be kids, no matter what the generation. Wisdom is acquired, not learned...patience is a prize won of many hard-fought battles, not something that can be granted.
It's difficult to keep my mouth shut around the "ignorance" of younglings sometimes, too...kudos to you that you did! I sometimes think that they say the things they do simply to be "cool" around their friends - heck, no one wants to admit that they side with the "old guy!"
...and you even made it to work - impressive, most impressive....

Obi-wan is one of the greatest jedi. He may not be the most powerful in strength, but his wisdom and patience allowed him to overcome most situations. He did, after all, survive order 66, and contribute to the training of the greatest jedi of all time.
And a little out of context, Yoda is doing a "cameo" in Soul Caliber, some sort of fighting video game. I saw a trailer where he used the force to stop a fist inches in front of his face. The fist was as big as Yoda and belonged to a huge monster (Size matters not). I don't think the appearance is canon.

Ahhh...you just gotta love kids, huh You know...I kind of chuckled at that statement only because I can see someone of that age saying that, and I can just hear it, too.
Although I tend to work with a lot of younger kids (infants and toddlers), I do occasionally work with children that are school age and above. They truly do not realize that those of us who are "old school" have been through trials that they have yet to endure. They will one day realize that they are now "old school" and that kids are saying these things about them.
I'm glad you got the chance to watch at least part of the movie I may have to watch it tonight

I was somewhere between laughing and wanting to smack the kid. Would you really " condone" such an action? lol... Anakin " was" all about the battle, the intensity of the duel fueled that spark inside of him. It was how he felt connected to the Force, what he perceived to make him " stronger". Where as the older, more wiser Jedi, Obi-Wan knew better. Allowing the " Force" to flow thru him, calmed him, brought him to peace within himself gave him the inner strength he needed to become victorious.
Ahhh....youth
Love you

Well.... did you watch it tonight?! Please, if you did, let me know what you thought of it, I've never seen it.
I love it when stuff like this happens! The other day a guy at work told a joke, and it was a SW joke! (not one of Stooge's, this one wasn't that great, but hey, whatever!), and it reminded me of just how ingrained in our culture SW is....
Anyway, very fun entry!

I guess compared to Ani, Obi was pretty "old school", as were most of the other Jedi. It's just the way the kid said it, kind of arrogant, like "Obi, give it up, your time has passed." At least that's the way I interpreted it; I could be off base. I just think Obi deserves more respect. Kids today, I tell ya!
I find that those lines get more blurred as I get older
Same here. As I've gotten older, people and their motivations have become more shades of gray than black/white.

Yeah, I've been finding that out, Granny.
Cool heads prevail
No pun intended! Get it? COOL heads? Hee hee
He was stronger than Anakin ever could be
Right, but in different ways than Ani. I guess a certain maturity needs to be reached before you can see that.
Obi-Wan was very good, more so than he's often given credit for.
Exactly!

Right! He deserves major props!
They truly do not realize that those of us who are "old school" have been through trials that they have yet to endure.
I guess that's the magic of being a kid. I don't think anyone appreciates that until they've grown up and they want that magic back. The trick is to keep the magic in our lives anyway!
Would you really "condone" such an action? lol.
Nah, you know I wouldn't....probably not...

Yup, and Ani lacked that focus...he wanted to control things more.
Love you too hon!

"You're old school, Obi-Wan! Old school!"
This made me laugh!! (Not out of disrespect for Obi, but because I can hear a kid saying this!)
Sometimes I see the "old school" mentality as a compliment. Someone standing his/her ground because of experience and being all the cooler for it. (Does that make any sense?) Like how Obi-Wan, no matter how "old fashioned" his Jedi ways may seem now that we have the EU, will always be one of the coolest Jedi ever!
but we gotta do what we gotta do
Call in sick?
