An Evening with Troy Denning
Yesterday, the lovely JediPug and I went to a Troy Denning book signing at Border's, in honor of the newest and final installment of the LoTF series: Invincible. Besides being the author of one of my fav EU books, Tatooine Ghost, Troy Denning has written Recovery, Star by Star (New Jedi Order); the Dark Nest Trilogy, & Tempest and Inferno (LoTF).

Border's did a great job creating an SW atmosphere with store employees in costume (including DV providing some eerie breathing sound effects!) and SW music playing in the background.

A Border's employee made some introductory comments and mentioned that his co-workers constantly teased him about being an SW fanatic. Poor guy...I tried to give him some encouragement and told him to stay strong. After that, he passed out free posters of the Invincible cover art! Woo hoo!

Then Mr. Denning read an excerpt from Invincible, complete with classic-style Han/3-PO banter. :^O

Next, he answered audience questions about his creative process, characterizations, and how he, Karen Traviss and Aaron Allston collaborated on the LoTF series.

Then came the book-signing. Some people had 4 or 5 books they wanted signed, and Mr. Denning graciously signed all of them, and he also signed the posters. He was really friendly and personable. I told him how much I like Tatooine Ghost; he chuckled and said he was a bit surprised when he was asked to write it, since at that time he'd just done Star by Star and was afraid he'd have to go into hiding (I think he was only half-kidding! :O).

Here are some pics provided by Jedi Pug. Hope you enjoy!

Sounds like you had an enjoyable time.

I feel sorry for the authors who have to kill off a popular character. R.A. Salvatore received death threats after Chewie's death(and Salvatore's brother was sufffering from cancer at the same time). I hope that most of us fans are not so devoted to SW that we lose perspective. As much as Chewie's death was sad, I understood their reasons for doing it, and it has certainly impacted the way I read SW books now. Nobody is safe.

Soooooooooooo cool! I would have loved to have been there! I love Troy Denning's writing style, so when I eventually get through the rest of the series (I'm finishing up Bloodlines...again), I'll be looking forward to that one.

Tatooine Ghost...ahhh! I think most of the fangirls really adored that one (I sure did :D )Star By Star...loved it! I wasn't mad at Denning at all for writing that one...the story had to be told, and I was reading through my tears...! How can someone get angry with the writer? Hmmm...I just don't get that one!

Thanks for sharing the story - and the great pics!! :D

No doubt! Fans can get "close" to a character and feel sad that they're killed off, but in the end, it's fiction, and there's no excuse for crossing that boundry.

That is just so wonderful that you two got to do this!!!
Not only was it a special experience to meet an SW author, but sharing it with another fan/friend made it extra special. :x

But then you'd be letting all those snobby, unappreciative kids down. ;)

That was really nice of him to sign all of those different books people had.
Really! I had 2 books for him to sign and I was afraid to ask for a third but he was so nice about it, not like some other celebs who seem like it's the last place they want to be.

which part of Invincible did he read?
He read the first three pages of chapter 9.

Actually, the majority of the costumed characters were Rebel Legion and 501st members ;)

How super, eahf5!!! (although you know that I know you were going! ;)) I can't wait to read my copy that you so graciously got for me!!! :D What a wonderful friend you are!!! (besides, this just gives us a reason to get together . . . as if we need a reason! :))

I think it's always great when one has the chance to hear an author read from his/her own work. Gives it more life. :)
