What Would His Mother Think?
This could fall into the category of "what-if".

I've been having "issues" with my parents lately, and I've been contemplating a lot about parent/child relationships. That got me thinking about Anakin and Shmi. During the events of ROTS and afterward, I wonder if Ani ever thought about how Shmi would react to what he'd done and where his life was headed. Ani loved and respected Shmi so much, wouldn't it cross his mind at least once? If I may be so bold as to speak for Shmi, I'm sure that she would be deeply ashamed of his actions when he was heading towards the dark path. Would that matter at all to him? I'm definitely not of the opinion that Ani's (or any adult's) motivations should rely on their parents' reactions, but Shmi was so gentle and loving, and she instilled those values in Ani. Sure, the main reason he chose the dark path was to save Padme, and even if Shmi was alive, she couldn't do anything about that, or about the other issues leading to his fall. But considering Ani's intense attachment to Shmi, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for him to think about how she would feel about all this.

It's similar to how Ani knew that Padme wouldn't understand about him killing younglings and the other Jedi; that's why he didn't tell her the full truth before he headed to Mustafar. If Ani gave it some thought, I'm sure he'd conclude that Shmi wouldn't be thrilled, either.

I'm sure that any thought of Shmi brought back too much pain and guilt for Ani, but, let's face it, turning to the dark side was not exactly honoring her memory.

Thoughts, anyone?

The dark side clouded his mind. He had close to no power over what he was doing and he had 3 lives at stake. Padme' and the twins.

There was only one child, as far as Vader knew.
I have to agree. It was far to painful to remember his mother, but he probably did, and that's why he's crying on Mustafar.

Good point Bai Ahzur. I never actually entertained the idea as to why he was crying on Mustafar.
And, i think it was his mother's death that especially pushed him even more towards the Dark Side. I think if he told her specifically that he killed Younglings, as opposed to her hearing it from Obi-Wan, she would have completely "abandoned" point-blank. She does anyway in the end ("I don'r know you anymore. Anakin, you're breaking my heart.") but at the beginning, she doenst believe Obi-Wan. ("Not Anakin. He couldnt.") Just pondering...

I think part of what drove him to the dark side was the loss of his mom... I mean he obeyed orders (sorta) and did what the counsel asked but then he finds out his mom is dead and then in the same way he saw his mom dying he starts to see padme dying so whats he do he takes one old mans advice (sidiuos) and attempts to prevents losing padme.... Nonetheless he still loses padme and in effect loses his kids... guess you can't win against the force... just my thoughts

Also his mother might actually approve after being tortured by the Sand People. Someone going through that much pain and suffering might go a bit insane.

That's true, Darth Chockerious, but she seemed pretty sane when she died, but that's just my opinion. I believe that no, Shmi would not have approved of his going to the dark side, considering she gave him up to become a Jedi! I mean, who would want their child to grow up to become a Sith Lord? Only how many Jedi turned away? 21? Well! I understand Shmi wanted him to be unique, but...thinking she wanted him to be a Sith? Please!
