Costumes and Comic Jams
Hoo boy... I've been busy, busy, busy! I'm going on another drawing-binge again, not that it's a bad thing. I'm just gonna hafta squeeze in a HAN-ting strip 'fore I burn myself out again.

As I've mentioned once or twice before here and on the forums, on another forum I participate in a Comic Jam. Currently as I type this, I'm working on my third page of this segment (14th page overall). There's only two people working on this CJ; myself and another member of that board, Darth Sparky. And so far of all the CJs I have worked on in the past, this one requires the most research and has been putting my Photoshop skills to the test. I draw with a WACOM tablet and work primarily in Photoshop, which is really a godsend, 'specially when I get lazy and need to copy/paste a buncha Buzz-droids in a panel.

CJ008- Only a Sith Deals an Absolute is the CJ I have been plugging away at for a while now. The last coupla pages I did so far for this CJ start here.

CJs are pretty fun, and I would love to introduce the forums here to 'em. I just dunno how many would be eager to participate and currently, my focus is on this current CJ. Usually the CJs have a random and humourous storyline. This one, though, has been rather dark and I have been working in tandem with Darth Sparky on the storyline. And since it's taking up my time... if for some reason I ever get off-schedule with the HAN-ting, this CJ is why!

Now, onto the costumes... Halloween is coming up in less than 30-some days and I'm really racing to design and then build a costume. These past coupla years I didn't have the room nor the time to work on a costume, so I intend to make up for it this year! I intend to roam around town in costume as well.

As a hobby, I design and build costumes whenever my time allows it. I unfortunatly work on the world's smallest budget, so my materials usually hafta be very cheap and easy to get. My current favourite and most-versatile costuming supply that I've been using for a few years now?

Duck tape and newspaper.

I kid you not. That costuming material is great, cheap and you can do alotta stuff with it! With duck tape and newspaper, I built an Alien xenomorph costume in a few weeks!

Alien, modeled by my brother. Front of alien. Back of alien.

The head is nothing but duck tape and a newspaper framework over a sleave of an older costume fashioned as a hat. I kid you not, that is entirely newspaper and duck tape. It required at least 8 rolls of duck tape and the total price was roughly $40. Though, the costume looked great for the materials it was made out of.

This year, I don't intend to use so much duck tape as right now, I'm really unsure what I wanna build. I'm against the clock here, too. What I wanna do, though, is design a costume based on my Rodian half-breed character, Trak Nar, which would require some paint apps to a Greedo mask (that I still need to buy...).

Trak Nar (coloured design).

Though, instead of the nerdy Rodian there, I plan to use his Jedi design, as it'd just look cooler and I think I can find the supplies I need for it for pretty cheap.

Jedi Trak 01. Jedi Trak 02.

Though what's sorta holding me back right now (aside from needing to hop onto eBay and buy a mask...) is the skin-markings. I dunno what paint would work best on latex. Acrylics won't, I know that from expirience. What would you suggest? I'd love to be able to make this costume work...

When I make quick and easy film prosthetics, I mix acrylic pigment into the latex and then paint that, it works just fine and doesn't flake off in a plastic skin like straight acrylic - only drawback is getting the color just right, latex dries several shades darker, so experimentation may be in order. Way cheaper than buying the real stuff...

Well... I know that Testors paint usually works pretty well on plastics... I just don't like how tacky it feels when it dries and it smells just awful when I'm using it. Hrm, I'll try the acrylic/latex mix, though I'm a bit hesitant as the paint apps are gonna be going on a mask.

I don't know how I missed your entry yesterday, but I did. Sorry 'bout that.:)
Your sketches of Trak Nar are wonderful. You certainly are talented! I've decided to try out your duck tape and newspaper costume idea. I know for a fact it won't be nearly as good as your creation, but I'm going to give it a chance. One wonderful invention of late is the colored duck tape, hmmm, I wonder if there is some available in purple...

I enjoyed your entry. You'll have to update us with your costume details--and definitely post a pic when it is completed.:)

Actually, there is purple duck tape. Blue, green, red, day-glo green, neon orange, brown, white, black, classic silver, purple, yellow... It comes in alotta colours now and Duck Brand holds contests for creations made with duck tape.

Welp... I had just bought a mask off of eBay. All I need is paint... and the materials to build the robes.
