What the Rancor Ratings Mean
Before I start posting reviews, I'll define how my ratings system works. Not all books in the Expanded Universe can be readily compared to one another. However, people love to rate things and I'm certainly not above that. These are very rough guidelines of what the Rancor Ratings mean to me.

Five Rancors: spectacular! The tale exudes Star Wars while standing as a thoughtful and provocative read. Immensely enjoyable while it lasts and adds something permanent and worthwhile to the Star Wars mythos.

Four Rancors: superior; can be a ripping yarn or a slower tale, but possesses enough quality to elevate above the typical read.

Three Rancors: nicely in the middle; usually a decently well-written, pleasurable read; sometimes a particular flaw holds an otherwise high-class book to three.

Two Rancors: below average; still worth reading for a fan, but significant problems in the story and/or writing prevent a better rating.

One Rancor: outstandingly poor; reserved for the bottom of the Expanded Universe barrel.

Nice. I'm not a big fan of the EU myself, but I guess I can see which ones will be worth reading by looking at your rancor ratings.

Oh, BTW, welcome to the blogs!

Thanks for the welcome! I'm planning on posting them once a week - I have a pretty sizable backlog of them right now to work with.

Hey! Welcome to the blogs!

I am right smack in the middle of reading the EU, I'm going from start to finish, well, that is until the Darth Bane books came out. I haven't read a lot of the recent books that have come out, and I've been trying to stay away from spoilers. So if there are spoilers, could ya let me know? I'm WAY behind! :8}

But I really like your rating system! That will help me a lot! :)

Thanks for all the welcomes! I'm actually right in the middle of reading from start to finish now too. I started in May of 2006 and drew up a list of 96 novels in chronological order. Since then, of course, many more have been published, including ones like the Darth Bane books. Right now I'm currently on X-wing Book 8: Isard's Revenge.

The advantage I've had as far as spoilers is I've already read the books once already as they were originally published, so I've kept up with all the new ones as I go. I do my best not to spoil any key points in my reviews, but it's always a fine line when I'm summarizing the plot to make a point. Hopefully they will have just the right amount of information!

Hi,
welcome to the blogs, looking forward to your reviews as I'm working my way through the back catalogue and seeing as my local bookstores don't stock very many SW books it's always good to have a guide as to what to order.
