 | Another Reason FIlms are poor lately |
Another culprit is marketing of films.
Many projects, not all, are started with marketing in mind. Lots of times, film execs choose an actor or actors first. Who's hot? Who can they sell the chosen actor to? Then they try to choose a script for the actor that makes the actor all sparkly to his/her fans.
But, then, just to be safe, the execs will try to pick a script that they know they can at least sell the DVDs with.
Which is why this year alone, there are over 20 films (of movies I could think of) that are either remakes, or movies based on TV shows. The sure thing is the nostalgia factor.
They know people will go see movies like "bewitched", "The honeymooners" and yes, even Batman, because people are comfortable with what they already know.
It seems like rule number one now is never challenge the audience.
I mean, batman was an alright flick, but it's Batman. I know about Batman, everyone knows about Batman. We all bought tickets to a story we already know.
The same is true for King Kong coming out this year. We all know this story already.
Personally, I'm disappointed in Peter Jackson for choosing to do King Kong. The man had a golden opportunity to do something really daring, challenging, and ORIGINAL!
Jackson had the world eating out of his hand after Lord of the Rings, yet he decides to go the safe rout and make Kong. Yes, it will probably be cool looking, and a good film, but at the heart of it, it's still just King Kong, which I have seen 2 versions of already.
Some people have said the same thing about Star Wars, and Lucas doing the same movies. But I think it's different. Lucas was telling a story that took six movies to tell. Furthermore, you went to every episode not knowing what was going to happen. The Star Wars saga is an original story, not a remake.
Quintin Tarentino is another original filmmaker, and I love the guy for it.
Quintin did what all film makers should do, remember that film making is art, and that through this art you have a unique chance to communicate, and challenge people or to give them something they have never seen.
So it's not for a lack of good scripts, believe me I have read some incredible ones coming through my buddy's hands. We get bad movies in the theatres because the big movie companies won't take chances and make movies that aren't SURE THINGS.
There is hope though.
1. I think the ticket sales reflect that people don't want what's being offered. The movie that made the most money this year, by more than $147,000,000 was Star Wars, an Original film.
2. Thanks to innovators like Lucas film, it's becoming easier and easier for independent film makers to get there wonderful original stories made, and with out any dependency on big movie studio's. Soon, by way of direct upload to theatres, filmmakers will be able to bypass the big film studios all together when they no longer need them for distributing. Then we will once again have variety, and original films in abundance.

I'm a serious movie buff. I totally agree with you. The films have declined based on Hollyweird execs. Except for the Marvel Comics films. With StarWars ,Matrix ,LOtR, an Blade all coming to an end I got alittle worried about future films. Instead of collecting comics (like I did as a teen) Now I'm collecting the Movie adaptions. It's the such a cool way to upgrade.
..........Xmen an Spiderman have already developed into sequals now I have something to look forward to. Also you mentioned movies not being original. This is true but NewLine has made break through by bringing back the V.S in films. (Freddy V.s Jason). Then this was followed by Fox (Aliens V.s Predator)

I'm hoping for more along these lines. Maybe G.I Joe V.S Transformers Getting back to Marvel Comics Film Adaptions. I noticed that Fantastic Four an Xmen are both on FOX, this would be another chance for a V.S I mean why not? Alien Invasions are making a comeback ever since the success of ID4. Maybe they should bring the Westens back. I'm tired of seeing the same 8 actors in every movie. In the 80's (with the exception of the brat pack an the like) many movies had actors that were new. To me this gave those movies there own originality. These are some views that I have.

Finally
Finally
I understand Execs dont want to take a chance but if your gonna recreate something recreate a genre.
...........Leave the animals alone an bring back some real dramtic Animation films, as George Lucas has said bring in more Digital Theaters! Why go to a movie that has the same surround sound as your mini plex flat screen at home?
Movies have changed for the better as far as effects now only if we can get some good scripts an some NEW actors for each film (like Ewan McGregor an Christen) I never heard of those guys before Episode I an II. Now there Icons. We need more new faces.
Thanks for reading my Comments.

The main thing keeping me from giving my money to Hollywood is the state of movie theaters these day, or more accurately . . . the state of my home theater, which is a better place to watch films than any movie house.
I wait for films to hit DVD these days, so I can watch a film with the best picture and sound quality, in the comfort of my own home, and without distraction.
It has nothing to do with quality for me, it's all about the best place to watch the movie.

Your home theatre may seem like the best place to see a film, but that is because you have never been to the Arclight here in Hollywood.
With out going to too much detail. Everyone that comes to Hollywood should see a movie there. It't what real movie experience should be. Digital everything, couch like seats. No Coke or car commercials, gormet snacks, reserve seats, no bad angles on any seats. Ushers to keep people form talking.
When you can get QUALITY like the arclight, it does become important...for movies that are deseving of such quality. But yeah, I would wait for something like Zorro on DVD too.

and now we have "Fanboys" and look at what the Hollywood suits are trying to do to it.
It is tragic that the writers, director, producer - the actors all got on board for the magic that we all accept. and now.....it is being gutted, disembowled, based on suits who miss the entire storyline of going the distance for a friend who can't wait until TPM premieres in May, 1999 because he is dying of cancer. They want to take the "sad" element out of the movie thus removing the heart of the story.
George knew all along. Hollywood has no heart.
