Now the Sith is really gonna hit the fan!

A New Hope, after Revenge of the Sith
I watched Episode IV: A New Hope Last Night (what's a guy with no girlfriend right now supposed to do on a Saturday night?).
The Original Trilogy is so different for me now.
Which is good on so many different levels.
In this Blog lets talk about Dialog.

Every bit of dialog has deeper meaning now.
Vader says." I sense something, a presence I've not felt since..." After seeing Episode 3 I feel like Vader is sensing Luke, not Obi-wan. Notice he shuts off as he obviously thinks back when he last sensed it. I think what he senses is Padme's spirit in Luke. Or he could be sensing Luke since Luke was there on Mustafar in Padme's belly. When Vader stops short at "Since..." it's like he is saying to himself "Don't go there". Vader is puzzled because he knows padme is dead, along with their baby. Vader/Anakin has a problem with facing reality.

More Proof?
When Vader is talking to Tarkin:
Tarkin says," Obi Wan Kenobi? What makes you think so?"
Vader replies," A tremor in the force. The last time I felt it was in the presence of my old master."
Ok, so again, Vader is trying to figure out what he senses, or rather what he can pin these feelings to so he doesn't have to face what he did to Padme. In this bit of dialog, he is referring to the "Tremor in the Force" and the last time he felt that tremor was "In the presence of my old Master". In this dialog, the Tremor is what he's referring to, not Obi-Wan. He saying Obi-Wan ("my old master") was there the last time he felt the tremor in the force. So what is the Tremor? I believe its Luke. But Luke more as a symbol of changing times. Which is why Vader does not feel anything about Leia. Luke more or less becomes the chosen one. The tremor is the force telling Vader that something epic is happening that will change the course of his destiny. Luke, starting to learn the force is a symbol of hope, the beginning of the end of Vader. That is the Tremor. The last Destiny changing Tremor he felt was when he turned on Padme, and fought Obi-Wan, the two last things to destroy for his journey to the dark side.

I think Vader probably does feel Obi-Wan on the Death Star, but he also feels that tremor. He second-guesses himself, and wants to figure out what that tremor is before he deals with Obi-Wan. Vader knows better than to think Obi-Wan was merely on the Death Star to assassinate him. Vader knows Obi-Wan is on the Death Star, he knows Obi-Wan is not going anywhere, and he knows most likely Obi-Wan will find him. So he has plenty of time to figure out Obi-Wans plot. So he thinks.
Based on Vader's feelings, what he thinks he knows, and what he does not want to face, he pins the tremor on Obi-Wan. He denies the truth of this tremor, and refuses to face his past.
But Palpatine in Empire Strikes Back confronts that denial, at least with the new DVD versions. "Search your feelings Lord Vader". He's saying, "Dude, Denial aint just a river in Africa. You've known that Luke is your offspring since you first sensed him on the Death Star. For crying out loud his name SKYWALKER."
Vader's denial is really the little bit of humanity he has left. The good that is still in him. He denies the past because he knows in his heart that he was wrong. If he were completely evil, he would have no scruples about the things he had done.

Luke's destiny was to be the end of Vader. Either Luke would force Vader to face his past, or Palpatine would turn Luke, and Luke would kill Vader.

So why doesn't Palpatine just kill Luke? I'm not sure he wants to. Not because he cares, but because he knows how valuable Luke is to him. I don't think Palpatine denies his life is coming to an end. Evil yes, but Palpatine is loyal to the Sith. In his mind he is the great champion for bringing the Sith back from the dead to rule the galaxy. That is his legacy. His legacy will die if he leaves the reigns to someone as weak as Vader (Body and Soul are damaged too far). Which is why Palpatine wants Luke. I believe Palpatine knows about Luke from birth, he just can't find him. But, he's patient. He knows Luke's destiny will force him to make himself known someday. He's basically stringing Vader along till he can replace him with Luke.
It's interesting to think, had the dark side seduced Luke, how long would it take Palpatine to tell Luke that Vader killed his mother? Palpatine understands that timing is everything. Which is why he does not tell Luke in Return of the Jedi. He would have to gain Luke's trust first.
But Luke's resolve is much stronger than Palpatine had thought, so he punishes him with the lightning. I think it's his last ditched effort to turn Luke. He tried to seduce Luke, that didn't work, so now, he'll just try to break him physically. If he dies, so be it.

I've always loved the camera work and editing on Vader as he's watching Palpatine fry Luke. With the music and everything, you really see how Vader is facing his past for the first time, and realizes that he's been nothing but a tool. He knows now that palpatine was NEVER his friend, and never loved Vader at all, which is really what seduces Anakin in the first place. The chance to have a loving parent, who loves him unconditionally. To Anakin, Palpatine offered a way to fill the gaps of love that he so desperately needed. Anakin felt Palpatine was the only one who really cared about Anakins feelings. He felt Palpatine loved him as a son.
Having seen Episode 3 now, this scene in Return of the Jedi is really heart wrenching. Before it was "Yeah, Vader saves his son." Now, there is so much more behind Vader's turn back to the light.
I feel Vader's pain of realizing everything at once. Imagine finding your whole life has been a lie, that you helped destroy everything you once loved, and the betrayal of a father figure. It's like emotional overload, but he has to decide now whether to continuing living a lie (letting Palpatine kill Luke), or face the truth and redeem himself before it's to late. That's drama!

I love it!
