I Have Great Faith in the Boy...
Well, school's finally out and I'm pretty sure I passed exams. Lots of stuff going on this summer, but when I can I'll be here. Also, my fanfic is on the way. I finished it over exam week and now I need to think of a title.

Now to business.

I read a blog by Darth Hiram a few minutes ago and it got me thinking.

Anakin Skywalker, as you all know, grew up as a slave. He often talked with the pilots and customers who came into Watto's shop and he obviously had a great interest in "getting out there". Now, at some point I'm sure that he voiced his dreams and opinions, and I'm sure that at some point Watto had to hear these. Watto himself says, "I have great faith in the boy."

Well, you could have fooled me.

When Anakin came back after all those years to the little junk shop in Mos Espa, Watto was extremely surprised to see that he was a Jedi. Why? He must have heard at some point that Anakin wanted to be a Jedi Knight. If he had such great faith in Anakin and his abilities, why did he seem so surprised when Anakin got what he wanted, what he had dreamed about for so long? Obviously his faith wasn't as strong as he wanted it to seem.

Perhaps it was because Anakin had left ten years previously to become a Jedi. Perhaps it was merely that he didn't expect to see Anakin after all that time. Perhaps he did believe, deep down, that Anakin would become great. And perhaps, almost like a father figure, he hoped that Anakin would have a better life than he did. Perhaps that was why he had such "great faith in the boy".

Thoughts?

Wherever the Force may guide you, God will bless you.

RR out.

Remember, Watto was trying to scam Qui-Gon.

I doubt Anakin would share personal hopes and ambitions with Watto. I'm sure he learned at a very early ages that "masters" were not to be trusted with dreams and desires. On Earth, slave owners have always done what they could to crush the spirits of their slaves and keep them from dreaming as best as possible.

As for his meeting with Anakin in "Attack of the Clones", Watto was a beaten being by then. He had lost everything and had done what he could to rebuild from nothing. I'm sure even if the news had traveled to Tatooine (about Anakin) that Watto wouldn't have cared to hear it.

Well, school's finally out

WHAT! I'm not out for another month.

Onto the real reason of this blog. Perhaps Anakin knew when to shut his mouth about his dreams and wishes. Maybe he knew that Watto didnt want to hear it so he only told his mother. Maybe something that could be written into a short story.

If Watto did believe Anakin had what it took to be a Jedi, he probably wouldn't have expected Anakin to ever come back to Tatooine, let alone just walk up to him out of the blue one day. So his surprise is justified in any case.

But while I think Watto legitimately had faith in Anakin's abilities, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who could ever honestly believe that anyone he knew was a Jedi. Jedi are special, don't hang out on worlds like Tatooine, don't hang out with junk dealers, and they're not annoying little blond kids.

Heck, he didn't even believe that Qui-gon was a Jedi, and he barely even tried to hide it.

IMO Watto never thaught he would see Anakin again. He was genuinally supprised to see him back at the shop.
Watto knew Anakin was special. He just did not know exactly how special.

Enjoy your summer vacation:D

I think Watto was simply stating that he had great faith in the boy's podracing skills.

And perhaps, almost like a father figure, he hoped that Anakin would have a better life than he did. Perhaps that was why he had such "great faith in the boy".

Perhaps so.

IMO you have a better opinion on Watto than he deserves. First, Qui-gon never told him he was a Jedi, so probably Watto never could think that Anakin would become a Jedi. Besides, I tjhink that Anakin only was a skillful slave to him, and he tried to take advantage of his skills with mechanics and podracing. He had faith in his podracing abilities because he earned money when Anaking competed, but nothing else. Nothing fatherly about his feelings to Anakin.

I agree with usetheforce19; I think Watto's faith extended only as far as Anakin's ability to podrace. I don't think he expected Anakin to become a Jedi.

I think Watto knew something special about Anakin ... and definitely used that to his advantage most of the time. But I also think he grew fond of him and really did treat him as a surrogate father. He regarded him quite warmly in AOTC.
Good blog!
