The Origin of Count Dooku's Name
Count Dooku. He was the leader of one of the most insidious forces in the history of the Star Wars galaxy. And he led the Separatists away from the Republic and led them to believe that they should start their own government.

Have you ever wondered how he was named?

I've been studying Latin in high school, and came across the word duco (pronounced DOO-coh). It's a verb that can mean any of these: "to shape or construct; to calculate; to lead on the march or command; to charm, influence, mislead or draw in".

Wow.

Dooku definitely did all of these. He helped to shape and construct a new government (i.e., the Empire) while he worked with the Separatists. His moves required a great deal of calculation to carry out. He led them on the march against the Jedi and the forces of the Republic and commanded them. He used his charm and influence (no doubt aided by manipulation of the Force) to draw more and more people into the Separatist fold, leading them and yet misleading them.

In addition to all this, Dooku's Sith name, Tyrannus, means "tyrant or absolute ruler". And because very few knew of his master, Darth Sidious, he acted in his master's wake as the Separatists' top guy.

Dooku was definitely well-named. Maybe he wasn't named after this particular Latin verb, but it most definitely applies. I think that maybe George Lucas considered the word duco when he thought up the character of Count Dooku.

Thoughts?

Wherever God may guide you, he will bless you.

P.S. Hopefully I'll get a few more of these out fairly soon. Apologies for the absence...real life gets in the way all too often. Next on my list: the origin of the name Ackbar!

Very cool observation! I never knew this, not knowing any Latin.

"Tyranus" I thought was an apt name. Most of the "Darths" have cool, evil sounding names, like Bane, Maul, Sidious, etc.

Looking foward to reading about out favorite Admiral!

That's for the great insights. I have a blog (I don't think I deleted it) where I go into several didn't "Star Wars" names. It's amazing how well Lucas names his characters.

Great observation RR! A lot of names are based off of some ancient word and this is another fantastic example.

Very cool find! Even if Mr. Lucas didn't come across duco itself, I wonder if he might have come across a word that derives from duco? Either way, it's a very good word for describing Count Dooku.

Next on my list: the origin of the name Ackbar!
Interesting. ...What, you're not going to explain the origin of "Mon Calamari"? ;)

Excellent insight into his name, RR. He certainly did do all that the Latin word is derived from and lived up to that comparison.

And perhaps Tyrannus was a sign of things to come under Palpatine's new Empire ... a foreshadowing of his hidden tyranny.

Thanks, Gidrea! I ran across the word in my Latin textbook and started thinking about this.

I have a blog (I don't think I deleted it) where I go into several didn't "Star Wars" names.

I'll have to look that up, FAN4YRS. It would be an interesting read, I'm sure!

A lot of names are based off of some ancient word and this is another fantastic example.

I wonder how many of this sort of blog I could write, just going into detail about the names...I think it's a cool idea.

Interesting. ...What, you're not going to explain the origin of "Mon Calamari"?

I might...it's worth a shot. :D

about the latin, i agree its prob where it came from.

It's certainly probable...

Something else that's kind of cool...Dooku is Japanese for "poison."

Very interesting point, Viridian Saber! I never knew that...pretty cool.

And perhaps Tyrannus was a sign of things to come under Palpatine's new Empire ... a foreshadowing of his hidden tyranny.

Definitely where I was heading...unfortunately, what my brain thought, my fingers didn't really type. :D

Hey guys, how about the theory that the name was set as a tribute for the actor instead of anything else?
Christopher Lee is well known for his performance as COUNT DRACULA and for that it makes sense to me that may be COUNT DOOKU -la- could be some kind of applause for the actor. Isn't it weird?
What about it?
