James Earl Jones vs. David Prowse
While I wanted to discuss the "practical applications" of Jedi first, out of respect for my father I'll start with his topic. Now that's an interesting way to start a blog. Let me explain what I mean.

One night, (May 18, 05 actually) as my father and I were talking about the different aspects of Star Wars (now why would we be doing that?) he mentioned something interesting. That, of course, will be the whole blog, so I'll tell you what that is later. Anyway, he mentioned that this would be a good topic to blog about, and I agreed with him. Next day, when I check my e-mail, I see an issue of Delta Source with an interesting announcement. The introduction of Star Wars blogs! Well, can't get a better "sign from heaven" than that, so I got to work. So this blog is dedicated (boy, don't I sound all formal) to my father for the inspiration for it. Ok, here goes:

We all know that Darth Vader features the body of David Prowse and the voice of James Earl Jones. The point that we were discussing (and I'm sure we're not the only ones) was what's the point? Why have one actor and one voice? And was proper credit given to both? Who deserves more credit? The man sitting behind the microphone becoming, as far all those who aren't aware are concerned, the symbol of evil in America, or the man who had to act without voice, pantomiming each and every move, and really being the "man behind the mask". Is it really fair that one man be known, and one man fall into the abyss of time? I'd be really interested if any of you have any opinions (or facts) about this. Corrections are always appreciated and will be put into place as soon as possible. Congratulations, Mr. Lucas! And may -the Force be with those who seek it.

David Prowse was in the suit most of the time.

James Earl Jones supplied the voice, and was not credited until Return of the Jedi hit theaters.

Sabastian Shaw played the unmasked Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi.

Ben Burtt supplied the breathing sounds by using a scuba regulator.

Bob Anderson did most of the stunt work and lightsaber duels for Vader in the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

When I examine what makes the character so iconic, I get three things:
1. The costume.
2. The voice.
3. The breathing.

In my opinion, you can have all three ingredients without David Prowse. But you can't have them without James Earl Jones.

i feel having one play the actual actor in the suit and a diff. one doing the voice was exactly the right choice. james earl jones supplied the dark voice of vader and really who better to do it, i don't think david prowse could have done that. no offence to james earl jones but you can't put that fat man in a vader suit either so thats why you had to have someone else play the actual character. i think more credit should go to david prowse because acting with out a speaking part has to be hard as hell. but all in all GL made an excellent choice is how he did vader
