 | In-depth Politics |
Sorry my posts hage been far between, but it'll stay that way through school since I have little time to write. Anyway...
You know, it's amazing. You think you know your governments, and all of a sudden your political science teacher throws things on you. Check this out:
The Old Republic is an indirect democracy like ours. The people elect Senators whose terms are renewed (or not) every x number of years. Interestingly, there's only one house (the Senate) where all decisions are made, so there's no real check on either house. Also, I don't think it's as fair as the American system because, although I've read a number of books on SW politics (not straight, I mean through other books) I haven't seen anything that points to regions. Meaning, it's a certain number per planet, regardless of what continent etc. they're from. This is more like our Senate, except that without a House of Representatives, the rights of the minority who may live in a certain area won't be protected as much (and as we know, alien rights were a huge deal there).
The next twist is that they have a parliamentary system, meaning that their leader, or Chancellor, is elected from within. I'm pretty sure Mr. Lucas did this on purpose, to allow Palpatine to ascend the ranks. It's interesting to note, though, that even in the English parliamentary system (and correct me if I'm wrong,) his ascent would've been impossible due to election procedures.
Let me know if you enjoyed this or just found it boring. if you guys enjoy this I'll try to continue it as time goes on.
