"But These are My Friends!"
In "Return of the Jedi" Princess Leia pleads with the Ewoks to keep Han, Luke, Chewbacca, and the droids from becoming dinner. Exhausted, and without a complex argument, she simply says, "But these are my friends!"

What teenager hasn't uttered these words as they attempt to justify friendship with a strange or wild peer? It's strange to hear these words coming from Leia, especially after telling Jabba that: "We have powerful friends...."

Indeed, it does seem difficult to justify our friendships, at any age. It is especially hard when we are attempting to explain our friends to someone we want to impress. Jabba, known even in the children's storybook versions as "vile", is not someone Leia is concerned about, so she pours it on, but with the Ewoks, whom she is hoping to make allies, the words don't come so easily.

I suppose if we looked objectively at Leia's friends we would be skeptical about te kind of people she associates. An inexperienced farmboy who somehow managed to be a hero at the battle of Yavin, a smuggler who seems unincumbered by illegal activity, and a fierce Wookiee who is known for pulling droids' "arms" out of their sockets.

The point is, sometimes all we can say are "but these are my friends" and hope that the people we love will accept them as we have.

Nice blog. I don't really have much to add to what you say here, so I'll just let it stand on it's own. :)

Nice analogy to teenagers - sometimes they choose friends for unhealthy reasons, though...these "fake-ships" can lead them down negative paths. In Leia's case, however, the strange montage of beings turn out to be the saviors of the galaxy! I guess you never can tell.... ;)

Insightful thoughts.

As a teenager, I had a friendshihp with a girl who my parents didn't "get", and they didn't understand why we were friends. But, as I told my parents at the time, she was fun and loyal. Sometimes others just don't see what we see; that's why we need to protect our friendships.

To MomOf2YoungPadawn~What you say is true, and I don't mean for this blog to be an excuse for people (children or adults) to hang out with persons that will dangerous for them. However, sometimes we label before we think.

Great tthoughts ewanandhaydenfan5, well spoken!

Good thoughts, F4Y ... perhaps Leia's plea to Jabba was more of a threat, rather than the attempt at kind persuasion with the Ewoks. Either way, her faith in her friends saved them in each occassion!

I don't know if I agree with the analogy so much but as a segue into friends subject and the company we keep, it worked.
Good blog.

How's it going? :)

Gold5~Good to hear from you again. It's going well, my Disability went through in June and physically and financially I am doing pretty well. It's nice to be able to rest from that constant strain of wondering, "How long?"

Some wonderful thoughts :) It's funny...I watched this movie (actually, I watched all OT movies) last night while working on a Leia costume. I had never thought too much of this statement before, but it is interesting how we present ourselves, and our friends, in the company of others. We may act one way in front of someone we don't particularly care about (i.e. Jabba in Leia's case) and a completely different way in front of someone we may care more about (i.e. the Ewoks).

I find that I have to explain the friendships I developed through here to many...and I find myself responding the way Leia did to the Ewoks...but these are my friends.

Again...some wonderful thoughts. You now have me thinking :)
