Reading Through the Prequels: Just Finished PHANTOM MENACE
I just finished 283 pages that is/was THE PHANTOM MENACE by Terry Brooks. That many pages in three days may be a record for me.

Anyway, here are my observations from the latter part of the book:

First off, the author did not make it clear that Palpatine and Sidious were the same person. I felt that it wasn't made clear in the initial film either. Yes, I knew the same actor was playing them and I knew Palpatine becomes the Emperor (thanks to James Kahn and the RETURN OF THE JEDI novel), but I did not know HOW he would become Emperor. My theory from 1999-2004 was that Palpatine and Sidious would merge into the same being. I saw Palpatine as a cunning, scummy politician, but thought that perhaps instead of being a master mind he was simply fresh fruit ripe for an evil force like Sidious to overtake. Anyway, I found it interesting that Brooks left the whole Palpatine-Sidious thing somewhat loose, maybe in 1999 no one knew how it would end up.

Believe it or not, there are actually portions (small though they are) where Jar Jar displays not only some intelligence, but genuine wisdom. I've never been a complete Jar Jar hater, but the book is much more kind to Jar Jar than the movie.

I was disappointed that Obi-Wan was still the dutiful student of Qui-Gon who only trained Anakin as a favor to his former "Master". I would like Old Ben's words of Anakin to be true, "he was a good friend", but I have seen little evidence of that in the films (really only saw it in Episode III) and have thus not seen it at all in the books (although Obi-Wan comes off as somewhat less of a jerk).

I am looking forward to beginning ATTACK OF THE CLONES. "Clones", as my frequent readers will know, is my LEAST favorite of the six films, but perhaps a good book adaptation will make me have second thoughts.

Those of us who saw/read ROTJ knew about Palpatine/Sidious. We just didn't know much more than that. With the Prequels, we have his expanded story as well.
I, too was suprised that the book was more kind to JarJar than the movie was. IMO, I think a lot of people did not care for JarJar based on watching the film. Too bad.
As for Obi-wan, the next two books will tell you how to take him as far as the PT goes. I liked Old Ben myself.

I have read all of the PT novelizations, but have not yet read those of the OT. The books really do add more to the story...and opinions do change. I enjoyed all of the books, and now view the films with a different mindset.

I hope you enjoy Attack of the Clones...it really is better than the movie :)

I started ATTACK early this morning and so far none of it has showed up in the film, but that's cool. I was surprised that Chapter One begins with Shmi.

Hmm.... I've read parts of the TPM novelisation, but I remember hardly any of it for some strange reason....?:|

Ditto. I read most of this one, too, but, again, I don't remember much of it. In my defense though, it has been quite a while...

PS77 is right. The books are better. But I still like watching them anyway.

Well, Captain Peabody, if you read it when it originally came out it was five years ago, so I understand.

Let me just say that AOTC used to be my least favorite, just like you. However, I was able to free up my schedule enough to pop in the attack of the clones DVD, and I was surprised at my initial reaction. I recognized the politics of the movie, and was able to appreciate the developing characters. What other movie do we get to witness Anakin and Padme fall in love, the birth of the stormtrooper (kind of), and the start of RD-D2's and C-3po's friendship? Not to mention, the dissolve the the galactic senate. Anyway, Bottom line is, I gave this movie a chance and I really enjoyed it. In my opinion, it moves the saga forward ( it fills in more gaps) than ROTS. Give it more time, you will like it. I am sure the book will be the same.
