where's the Blitz?
It's that time of year again, time to buy "Summer Preview" magazines. It's something I've been doing since college. This year I expected to find coverage of the new "Indiana Jones" film as well as a certain animated movie. While I have found tons of info and photos from the new "Indy" release, I have seen absolutely zero coverage (outside of the "Star Wars" website) on the "Clone Wars" animated movie. What's up?

I realize this film won't be out for awhile (August 17), but I'm surprised there's not some buzz about it. After all, in the thirty two year history of "Star Wars" (hey, the novel was published in 1976) there has NEVER been an animated motion picture (television, yes, movie, no). I would think this would cause a stir among fans, critics, and causal observers. Instead, where's the press?

I will say that I have also noticed Lucas keeping a tighter rap on "Indy" merchandise until AFTER the release of the film. Tighter than the Prequel memorabilia, which was always available in advance of the movie. So, perhaps, the same is true of the new "Star Wars" film, even to the point of being reluctant to show photos and reveal content until close to show time.

Please let me know if any of you have found "Star Wars: Clone Wars" info in any of the summer previews.

There was a trailer that was leaked a couple of weeks ago and quickly taken down. It gives a really good glimpse into the story of the movie.

As for the lack of publicity, I think that's a strategy from GL himself. He feels that the prequels suffered from too much hype (God forbid he think it might be that movies just weren't as good), so he's downplaying this one until it gets closer to August.

IMO, I don't think they're going to have a big hit on their hands, and they know it. This movie is going to be strictly for the fans, and we're going to be the ones that see it. And maybe that's the way it should be.

Your comments are interesting.

Did you see "Deal or No Deal" last night? Obviously "Star Wars" is VERY mainstream. So when you say "strictly for the fans" it sounds like a blockbuster.

On the other hand, if by "strictly for the fans" you mean the folks playing the role play games and dressing like Princess Leia or Chewbacca at premiers, then that's too bad.

I was sorry when I saw the preview and saw that it was serious, dark animation and not happy colorful cartoon forms. IMO an animated film should appeal to six-year-olds and if an adult happens to like it, OK. If I were LFL I would want to appeal to the pups.

The film's gonna make some cash. However, I don't think the average Joe who has seen all SW films but can't tell you what the Millenium Falcon is is gonna shell out $10 to see a SW cartoon. People like us, however, are gonna see it a couple times apiece. And of course, families with kids will be there too.
Personally, I'd like to see a darker film. Not so dark that parents won't take their kids, but if it's a Jar Jar type of film I'm going to puke my guts out.

My guess is it will gross $100-175 million dollars. Pretty good, but not stellar.

Of course, I have been known to make mistakes, from time to time ;)

I, on the other hand, was hoping for a "Star Wars" cartoon that was as light as "The Smurfs", where Yoda has a pet cat that solves mysteries, and Artoo-Detoo works part time at a fast food chain.

If the cat gets mistaken for a Jedi during "Order 66", and Artoo burns down the restaurant, then count me in! LOL

I'd say the lack of publicity is probably due to the short timeframe... this wasn't announced until a few months ago, remember. Indy IV has been getting hyped for YEARS now, so obviously folks are gonna write about it a lot. Same with some of the other big movies opening this summer, such as The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and Prince Caspian.

In any case, I expect to see the coverage pick up considerably as we near August.

I haven't seen a trailer since they showed it at Star Wars: Fan Day in Plano, TX last October. The only information I've seen is what's been posted here on SW.com, which is practically nothing.

Granted (and this is rather disappointing), I'm not sure if the theater-world is treating this project as an actual SW movie. I don't think they see it on the same level as the other 6, and I know that many fans are the same way.

I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what happens...as irritating as that is to have to wait.

I guess I wouldn't quite put it on the level as the other six, but it IS a "Star Wars" movie. If there were a cartoon "James Bond" I think people would be talking about it.

Some interesting points have been raised here. I think Stooge is right about the late announcement factoring in. The question becomes how "mainstream" this CW cartoon will be. Will casual fans, who have flocked to the the movies in the past, embrace the cartoon series, or will the more dedicated fans like us be the only ones really looking forward to this?

I was talking to a friend last week who told me he was excited for the series, but hadn't heard about the August premiere in theaters.
