FAN4YRS looks at the first three "Indy Jones" Films
The first three Indiana Jones motion pictures were released in 1981, 1984, and 1989, making me seven, ten, and fifteen-years-old when they were issued.

I can't actually remember when the first time was that I saw "Raiders". I can tell you it would have been WAY too much for me as a six-year-old.

"Raiders", which originally released without Indy's name in the title, was interesting because it dealt with an item of the Hebrew faith that was actually gone after (according to some accounts) by the Nazis. Therefore, this film had a lot of historical fact to it. However, the part that bothers me the most is how much of an atheist the Indy character is. When Marcus attempts to warn him he says "you know what a cautious fellow I am," and throws a gun into his suitcase, as if he was going to shoot the Almighty.

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom", as I stated, arrived when I was ten-years-old. I did see this one in first release. I suppose I have something of a love/hate relationship with this film. I only saw it once in theaters. I was scared to death of the scene where the guy's heart gets pulled out. However, I enjoyed many of the other elements of the movie. The content was WAY too adult for a child my age and this movie, as well as "Gremlins", led to the PG-13 rating you enjoy today.

Where "Temple" was too horrifying I found "...the Last Crusade" too humorous. I hated learning that Indiana's real name was "Henry" and that the dog was named Indiana. I really didn't like the Laurel and Hardy-style father-and-son relationship was Indy and his Dad. I saw this film once in theaters and, as far as I can remember, I've never watched it again.

So what am I doing tomorrow? Seeing the new "Indiana Jones" film. Hey, Goldilocks didn't stop until she found a bed that was "just right". I can hope.

Reminds me of my first exposure to the Indy franchise. When I was a child my parents told me excitedly how Han Solo was going to be on television because they figured I would like it. So, in eager anticipation I waited all day to see Han on TV, only to see some dude in a fedora with a whip, and to add further insult to injury, Chewbacca was nowhere to be seen. So, it took me a few year to get over the shock. I should note that my parents were not trying to play a cruel joke on me. They just didn't realize that I expected to see Han and Chewie, not Dr. Jones.

This will be the first Indy movie I see in theaters, seeing as how I didn't see the originals until the late 90s.

*chanting*

Indy...Indy..Indy!! :D

Where "Temple" was too horrifying I found "...the Last Crusade" to humorous. I'm with you on that one, but in the way that I actually liked the banter between Indy and his Dad.

...the dog was named Indiana I heard Darth Maul was named after Palpatine's dog...LOL!!! :^O

I've actually never seen "Temple of Doom." I guess I've always enjoyed the Indiana Jones films, though--as you point out, none of them are perfect, but in general they're an enjoyable way to spend two hours.

I never liked Temple of Doom because of the little kid and the woman were too annoying for me.
I'll be there tomorrow as well.

It's interesting that you say that, because I don't hear the criticism about "Temple" that I hear about "Jedi". Somehow most people are able to overlook Willie and Shorty whereas they can't accept the Ewoks. I've actually been thinking of doing a second blog for "Temple of Doom".

In the years, I've really grown to love Temple of Doom and hate Last Crusade. Go figure.

Somehow most people are able to overlook Willie and Shorty whereas they can't accept the Ewoks.Which is ironic because I think that the Ewoks served as a nice metaphor about the Rebellion's struggle with the Empire. While the Ewoks were primitive, they knew what they were fighting for.

I think you can make a lot of parallels between "Jedi" and "Doom"

Evil supernatural leaders-"Jedi" has the Emperor, "Doom" as Maula Ram

Kid Appeal-"Jedi" has Ewoks, "Doom" has Short Round

High speed, non-automobile chase scene-"Jedi" has the speeder bikes, "Doom" has the coal cars

A scoundrel and a princess-"Jedi" has Han and Leia, "Doom" has Han and Willie

I wouldn't say that Indy has no faith... in fact, he seems to be the only one who has any awe for the power of the Ark. I think the great appeal of his character is that he's a constant skeptic even in the face of everything he's seen, which makes him seem much stronger and unpredictable.

I hear what you're saying, Stooge, but I'd like it to be a bit more clear cut than that.

I have recently watched the series again as the BBC have been showing it, and yes I'll be there this weekend. I would urge you to give The Last Crusade another go as I think it really is a good film.
Re Indy: I like the fact he's a sceptic, he is a scientist after all, that should always be their starting position.

Raiders and Crusade were great. Actually, I've never seen Doom.

Oh man, I LOVE the Indy movies. Can't wait for tomorrow.

Doom was annoying because of Willie, but otherwise, i don't think it was as bad as some people say, though I do think it's the worst of the three.

Crusade is my favorite, especially because of the humor and the banter. That made the whole movie.

I'm surprised to hear Indy described as atheist. He was pragmatic, and not prone to superstition, but he hardly seemed like a man of no faith. His faith was ambiguous, it's easy to see whatever you want to see in him, I don't think it needs to be any clearer. I will say that if he was clearly a man of sincere faith, it would have ruined the character and the movies for me.
