Is chewie a charter in his own right or a side kick?
hi peeps,

Based on the original trilogy. Do you think Chewie is portrayed well as a character in his own right or just as han's sidekick?????

any thoughts please.

I think he's portrayed very well as his own character! He needs other characters (just like R2) for interpretation, but he is his OWN Wookie!! :x

I agree with HG3. Chewie is his own character, in his own right.

Thanks guys,
Coming into star wars as a a widow!!! i need a shorter version of events and answers than those from my darling hubby,

i just think that chewie could possbily be so much more as it appears that han can not do with out him? ( i coulde be wrong having only seen films and read none of the books) i know the shame.

He has a few moments on his own at the end of ESB... but mostly, he's a sidekick. :)

I never thought of him as Han's "sidekick". I always thought of him as his friend. He was a character in his own right.

I agree with darthpinyody, He was created as a lesser charecter then he rose to victory!

I can imagine Chewie without Han (as in ROTS), but I can't imagine Han without Chewie.
Despite the Wookie life debt, I think Han suffered more without Cheie than would have occured the other way around. After all, Chewie was 200 years old and had 150+ years without ever knowing Han Solo. Han had been with Chewie most of his adult life up to his death.
I would love to see more of Chewie, so yeah, he is his own character for sure.

Well, FL, Chewie is the traditional sidekick, just like we see in serial westerns and scifi (GL enjoyed those matinees while growing up) of mid-20th century cinema. Every hero needs one (okay, maybe not need one, but they do add more dimension to the hero).

However, I think Chewie was a character in his own right. He was not merely window dressing. True, his story isn't flushed out in the OT, but we get a pretty good idea of where he stood on the important issues.

Chewie plays the dual role of both a partner, and an original character in his own right. In the movies we see that Chewie is in no way treated as infrerior by Han or anybody else. Chewie stands alone at certain parts of the OT, but he looks a lot better when paired with Han.

Yes, Chewie is his own man, BUT we don't see him w/o a human do we? He's always been lugged around by Han, Leia, Lando... It's too bad, because I think he's quite an interesting character on his own. Personally, if he just spoke English he wouldn't need a human around all the time!

Maybe it's Han who's the sidekick.... hmm.....
