 | I'm Rive, and this is my counterpart... Darthvader3263827 |
Did I already do an entry along these lines? I know there was a spurt of them revolving around avatars just awhile back, but I don't think I wrote my own. If I did... Write it up to my standard answer of me not being able to be expected to remember all my hundred odd entries
_______________________________
I am very bad with names.
Really really bad.
No. You're still not understanding. Really bad. I can know someone for 4 years and suddenly forget their name entirely.
That's why I need all the help I can get when it comes to browsing comments or message boards quite often. Thankfully, you (as a hyperspace member) have 3 full methods to define yourself here.
The avatar is generally held to be the most important. I'll agree with that... It separates the paid from the unpaid. Thus those that have something to lose from punishment from those that don't. Thus those that felt it worth their money to join the fan club from those that don't. In a nutshell: If you have an avatar then you're either on a free trial (which will only last 7 days or so)... Or you're guaranteed to have somewhat decent behavior 'round these parts.
This image (thanks Luuke )is still largely accurate. Victomte IS General Solo. K-F IS Ben Kenobi. Rex IS uh... Snaggletooth And I hope for many of you I AM Darth Revan.
And Stooge still gives me an urge to watch muppet movies.
Blasted Darth Vader needs nothing for remembrance. Oh well. At least an active user is Darth Vader
Basically, if you keep the same avatar for more than a month or two (and you blog frequently or comment frequently on my entries) myself and others will probably start to identify that avatar image with you. There are other related phenomena such as the whole "People read your entries/comments as if you are your avatar", but that topic has been done to death. It does make me want to change my avatar to R2 for awhile though.
______________________________
We haven't really talked about usernames much... The title implies that, besides being a geektacular number, I really dislike usernames with numbers in them. Your odds of me remember who you are and making direct associations with past comments/blogs you've made lowers by about 70% if you have a number in your name. If it's a geektacular number like 1138 or 421 it might just lower by 30%...
I could go on and on about this... But is there really a point? You're stuck with your username... Sorry. So if you have numbers in your name you might want to be consistent with your Avatar or you'd better have some excellent blog entries being written if you want to be remembered by people like me and become one of the faceless clones in the blog image up top, instead of a vibrant, personified, and identifiable figure like Steve Sansweet in the middle there
______________________________
Lastly I want to touch (briefly) on blog names. If you have your username in it (and it isn't a username with numbers in it) then you have a reinforced connection. Unique titles help too. "The Jedi Archives" doesn't exactly look memorable amongst all the other names.
_________________________
Above all though. Try to be unique. Have a unique writing style (Stooge is most memorable in this regard I suppose). A unique percpective (Darth Plagueis was R2-D2!). Or a pointless gimmick. (Look at the pretty divider lines all over this page!).
And perhaps most importantly of all...
An entry this dull and preachy is likely to lower your reader count by 85%

Funnily enough. I might be a target for this blog (avatar now changed).
In my defence, I'm just a big KOTOR fan and Revan was always wins the coolest look hands down.
My reason for changing my avatar was not this blog, (Rive:"yeah right"), but another Revan avatar I noticed whilst browsing through recently posted blogs.
Either way, Cin Drallig will do me fine: a true Master of the lightsaber. Consider me well and truely put in my place.

I have been careful never to change my avatar or my username since I started blogged in August for this exact reason. While other people maybe using this avatar I am quite sure I am the one who blogs with it most frequently. Perhaps I will change my username and remove some of the numbers.
Just out of curiousity Rive Caedo do you associate me with my avatar or have I not quite reached that status yet?

Even though I can't change my SN now, I prefer to refer to myself as "Gahmah". This Mustafarian avatar was actually the first one I had when I entered the message boards/blogs. Then I changed to a Dark Trooper. Then I changed back to this one (I was getting nostalgic). I'm not changing this one for a long time.

Jedi Master Mina Another Galaxy, another time
|
date Posted: Apr 08, 2006 12:13 PM
The username was easy. I needed a name folks could remember with ease. Also, "Mina" is a character from a classical movie. I will give you a hint: The main character in this movie has fangs and drinks blood. He falls in love with the heroine that is named "Mina" (I think it is spelled differently per the movie). I liked the name so much, I adopted it. Stick Jedi Master in front of it, and there ya go.
I do have to admit that I had an identity crisis when I first joined Hyperspace. I could not find an Avatar that fit my personality. Hence, the Queen of Naboo fits perfectly with Jedi Drama Queen. And so the story has been told, my dear friend Rive!
Dig the pics of everybody, cute!

Hello there!
Well, I just want to say I was way too lucky with this name! Since the ROTS avatars were available I'm "wearing" this avatar. The best DV avatar IMO. I won't change it unless I'm goofing around with someone in the boards, but eventually I'll go back to normal.
A while ago I was thinking of changing my blog's name, but didn't find anything I liked better and it fits so I'll keep that one as well.

Honestly I don't like people changing their avatars often simply because I get used to se them one way and those names I don't usually remember may become like strangers if they don't look the same. Maybe strangers for a few secons until I realize who that is, but consistency is better.
I also agree that screen names with numbers are no the best way to go. I always try to come up with a way to not use numbers if the name is taken, but that's just me.
I've seen lots of excellent blog names here in sw.com, some extremely lame of course and at some point I think blog names will be permantent too. I think they should.

Oh yeah, I completely agree about sticking to one avatar. That's your face in this nutty world of ours! Only jk has managed to remain memorable while constandly switching gears, and that's 'cause she's made it her shtick.
And thanks for the compliment re: my writing, but I'm pretty sure that it falls closer to "pointless gimmick" than actual style. And at the risk of seeming like a brown-noser (too late, look at my avatar!), I'd say that you, Dr. Caedo, are the most unique wordsmith on this site. The underlining... the boldface... the hyperlinks... the yodacons... and yes, those divider lines... a Rive entry looks and feels like no other!

She's memorable because she never puts in just one comment -- always 3 to 5 of our precious 50 spots on each entry. She's the gal at the party that, when I see her, I just grab a few beers and sit down and watch. and listen without saying a word For two reasons (1) it is enjoyable, and (2) you have no choice -- resistance is futile.

I tried to switch to a more traditional style before... I quickly switched back to Yodaconing, divder lining, underlining, and bolding it up though. It's more fun and it seems to get my point across better anyway.
