Firefly!
Yes it's true. I have no ideas myself. I just siphon off other people's entries like a mynock on power cables. Ooo, Entry 111. Neat.

FIREFLY!

The word no longer makes me think of a small beetle with organs using luciferase on luciferin to stimulate light emission. Nope. No longer! If someone said Firefly to me on the street (which happens all the time of course) I would be far more likely to respond "Shiny!" than the more common answer of "Who the hell are you?".

Firefly was an epic saga of 14 movies that explored the fact that Science Fiction can have drama, character depth, western elements, and comedy all wrapped into one package and work without a hitch.

Or was it a short-lived television series that got cancelled after 14 episodes? I suppose I'll stick with my definition.

Firefly was, in a word, semi-perfect. Hyphenated words count as one word, right? :p

Star Wars is, in a word, global.

That's not a bad thing mind you. Star Wars is fairly unique in that it tries to hit all demographics. Children (Jar Jar, Ewoks, and C-3PO and R2-D2 to a degree), teenagers (Darth Maul), and everyone else (Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Darth Vader). It's a great thing and it's what Star Wars is. This does have the side-effect however of creating some elements which can rub people the wrong way if they're not the demographic being aimed at (Jar Jar is most evident).

Firefly hits a much smaller demographic since it doesn't appeal directly to children... At all. I suppose there could be arguments made against this (in an episode that was never filmed Jayne was going to carry around a stuffed turtle throughout the entire episode, which would have been cute) but in all honesty if your show includes a traumatized girl and a space hooker... You're not aiming for kids.

Firefly aims at everyone who can enjoy quality television and are over the age of... I'll say 13. Though I think it would be best for 15 and up.

And they hit that mark over and over and over again.

If you cut out commercials Firefly clocks in at 10 hours. Then you add in Serenity (the film sequel to Firefly) and you get 12 hours... The same amount of time as the core of Star Wars.

Do I like my 12 hours of Firefly better than my 12 hours of Star Wars?

If you're asking that question then maybe you don't deserve to see it at all.
The real point is that now I have 24 hours to truly love.

Preview Firefly: Type in "Hello Cowgirl" on Google. Seriously. Seek out Serenity (Revised).

I happen to like Jar Jar.

I didn't attack Jar Jar, I just said he was most evident in being aimed at a specific demographic :)

Firefly, to the best of my knowledge, hasn't hit the british isles as of yet, but Serenity has. As someone who hasn't seen either should I watch Firefly first?

... but the ship! What about the ship? Are you going to tell them, or make them figure it out?

I was trying to make this entry not one of my usual rambling entries for 4 reasons.

1: I wanted it to be near the "Firefly?" blog it was based off of. (Alas it didn't get to be directly above).
2: I didn't want to scare people off with the size of their scroll bar.
3: Serenity (the ship) is worth a full entry... Though Kenobi-Fan already did a nice one.
4: If for some reason they decide to watch Train Job first. That's a seriously awesome reveal.

hasn't hit the british isles as of yet

Let's not forget the planned episode where Inara gets raped nearly to death.

It would have happened, I have proof.

Almost.

I trusted you had good reasons Rive. It is a cool thing to find out about as you watch the series, then the move (the ship that is).

I pledge myself to your teachings O' Dark Lord of the Firefly :)

It sure has as I bought it a week ago at in the HMV sale (bargain!).

I've only had it a week and am already loving it... I've watched all the episodes and am about halfway through watching with commentary. Yesterday, a friend lent me Serenity, and I'm watching it again for the second time right now!

For the short time Mal & Crew existed on television, their impact will be long felt in some corners of the 'verse. It was terribly fun to watch and I am only left to wonder how much more entertaining it could have been, had it been allowed to hook a few more folks like myself. I hate comparing SW and Firefly...I think it's like comparing apples and oranges. Sure, both are fruit but they are different on so many levels as to make a comparison 'fruitless'. Can I miss a show I never actually watched? I think so.

Hard decision firefly or star wars. I would not want to make that decision at all. I love both almost equally the same. and I do agree that firefly is absolutely not a kids show !!!
