 | Why Was Padme's Lightsaber Purple? |
(---- Previous Edition --- Rive's Prequel Alternate Universe Project --- Next Edition -----)
_____________________________________________________________________
A quick unrelated note: today's "Visit to Rancho Obi-Wan" is exactly the kind of feature I'd like to see on Hyperspace! Kudos to the staff.
________
Hello and welcome to Edition 3 of "WWPLP?"
Potential commenters keep in mind that I'm aware that the "real" Padme was not a Jedi, did not have a lightsaber, and it was not purple.
This is part of my project to create an alternative storyline for the Prequels, most likely in webcomic or comic book format.
You might do well to use that new navigation bar I put in at the top of the entry to go back and view previous entries if you missed them.
________________________________
So just as I think I'm making some progress in my abillity to draw characters in the Clone Wars style... I discover ships are much harder
The inherant problem with drawing ships in the Clone Wars style is that they didn't draw them in the Clone Wars cartoons. They made 3D models and then animated and rendered them in that 3D program. After that they superimposed the rendered ships onto the usually traditionally drawn backgrounds.
Now perhaps I could do this myself. My current experience with 3D modeling is rather limited however and I'm not sure if I want to attempt to create custom 3D models for every ship I decide to use in the project.
So, for now, you get to be subjected to me trying to learn how to draw ships
I do fair enough work drawing ships that already have multiple sources to drawn on within the Clone Wars cartoon series... Creating new ships is an entirely different matter. Simply figuring out how the ship should look at an angle took a fair bit of time. Even after getting the angle to look half-decent on the angle/color scheme test picture... The ship looks highly oversimplified (even for the Clone Wars animation style) and it needs a neck to balance it out.
As before, all fan-fiction material needs to be posted off-site, so here are the images (if you dare gaze into the heart of doom) and below that you'll find the production diary.
I suppose I want to show the entire prosess of creating the project... Including falling flat on my face.

I never thought I would see the day Rive would SPAM all over the blogs! 3 in one day??? What is your problem?!?!
---------
The hardest thing is to get the perspective right. Because one single line not in perspective ruins the whole thing. Yeah, so not pressure there . I like the ship outline. For the coloring I'd gladly give you some tips if you like to make it easier, better, faster, more intense but I don't want to fill your comments with that. Email me if you are interested.

Not a bad job given the resources we have... but last time I used your pretty little nav bar I ended up with more open windows than I could sift thru. (kidding)
Were you ever trying to copy the Clone Wars ship? I like what you've done and made your own design.
This is so much fun to watch. Thanks Rive.

I have mixed feelings on the fin-like thing on the top of it, but the ship is cool. It's Serenity-esque, but it's completely different than anything we've seen in Star Wars before. The only problem I see with the fin is that if guns come out of the top hatch, you'd risk blowing the fin off while trying to get rid of a ship or starfighter on your tail.
A Soloesque character...I like where this is heading.

Two days. Two days.

I would complain about you commenting before reading all the junk, but that's actually helpful to know that I'm getting it right enough that it's noticable

Not this time around, just giving it as a point of comparison for the art style I'm trying to aim for... And missing.
Holy Seven Corellian Hells Marvolo! Get out of my head.
I'll certainly be Star Warsing it up more (which mostly means making it more boxy). The fin will likely be modified into more of an extrusion in the next version.

You can still fine tune the details on the ship. I think you'd need a protractor and a ruler to get the same style (or just do it on the computer). But what you've got going on is totally Flash Gordon. Awesome. Its like a fin off a 57 Chevy , but without that I can see the Serenity look. Try and elongate and streamline parts of the ship to make it more SWsey.

That is too cool. You have to do this. Company rules be damned it would go on the desktop. Just don't give me that Caedo Corp. crap.
Wow, that was really harsh. I am joking of course.
However, if you can find him
I wanted to finish your sentence a different way jkelly....
However, if you can find him, and you need help drawing something from SW, maybe you can hire: The RC Team.

Hello Rive...I see that you have enjoyed my "AU" idea. You know you have to pay me royalties for every time you use it right? J/K. Cool ship though. Are you drawing them now by hand, or trying to do the 3d model? Just didn't quite get that part of your blog. If I were drawing them, just like a webstrip instead of animation, I would do it in flash for the ships, since it is in my opinion one of the easiest programs to use for drawing. (I do animation myself you see, so I am used to constantly drawing on flash).

Another thing which I might point out, although it is probably too late, is that maybe if you do animation, you could enter it into the SW fan film awards. Who knows, you might win, since the idea is good (and you would mention me in your aceptance speech, right? )
That's all for now, but keep us posted.

Looking at the pic from the original Clone Wars, and I realise this wouldn't be much help on the curvey Serenifalcon, I hope you're not ruling out the use of rulers in your artwork. Because they really are a useful tool, even if some folks think they ain't that artistic. They lie.
But the love-child of the Falcon and Serenity? That's gotta be the coolest ship ever to grace the skies. Not that this enterprise doesn't suck, of course. Because that would be demotivating.

Still , is This gonna be a comic , or are u actually gonna animate this?
Comics. Unless, by some miracle that will be studied by scientists for generations, this becomes the most popular fan-fiction series in the universe. In which case maybe somebody will help me out with an animated conversion of the comics
That's a long way down a road that will probably never even be built though so...
Comic.

Someone write that down.

Are you drawing them now by hand...
For now.
is that maybe if you do animation, you could enter it into the SW fan film awards.
Actually (even if I somehow did it as an animation) I couldn't enter it. They don't take dramatic fan-fiction with new storylines and such. Just parodies and the like.

For sure! Now that this seems to be developing into a serious project I'll really start to need to um... Try to make it look good. Which apparently doesn't involve freehand and haphazard coloring. Who knew?

Alright, is it just me, or is this not one great expression? I demand that at least one character says this over the course of the entire three volumes!
Get out of my head.

haphazard coloring
Honestly? Not entirely convinced you need to colour . . .
In my experience of non-professional comic making, albeit limited, if you really, really want to get the best results you don't have to work alone. But this is entirely a fan enterprise one would hope would be fun, then just do what pleases you - and drawing this seems to be something you're enjoying. On the other hand if you could rope DV into colouring for you more often you might find the process easier . . .

Nice, Rive.
One piece of advice (like you haven't had much of THAT!)...remember to color inside the lines. (J/k!)
Out of curiosity, how much time has this endeavor been taking?
