Star Wars: You Haven't Seen it Until You've Seen it in High-Definition!
In the olden days. We used to watch Star Wars at home like this.

Ye Olden Days

Those days are now dead and gone. Good riddance I say!

Because now it looks like this

Apparently Star Wars - all six of them - has been airing on Cinemax in High-Definition. I didn't really care, since I don't have a HD television.

But then a friend sent me some links to pictures from the Episode IV airing... I kinda want to buy one now :)

Here are a few of my favorites...

[WARNING] VERY LARGE IMAGES

Rebel Trooper: You can see the veining in his eyes... That alone almost sells me on HD.

Lord Vader: "Woah"

The Opening Shot: Wait a minute, this is the 2004 redo of the film and you can actually see all the stars? A miracle!

Artoo: Every scuff, scratch, and dent for your viewing pleasure.

Tusken Raiders: There's nothing particularly exciting about this picture... Until you see how crisp and clearly visible those carvings over on the right are.

Help me Obi-Wan: Did it always look that nice? With the vertical lines?

Uncle Owen: The texture is so clear you can almost feel that robe.
Aunt Beru: Perfect for all of you that wanted to make an Aunt Beru costume, but could never quite get the pattern right :p
Uncle and Aunt Beru Post-Stormtrooper: :O

These aren't the droids you're looking for.
These aren't the droids we're looking for.

D'oh: I guess not everything looks better in HD.

Falcon's Eye View Look at the size of that thing!

Throne Room Ceremony Look at the size... of that mustache on the far left!

Han Solo: Scruffy Lookin'

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Look at how dilated his pupils are due to the dim room. Nice!

The End: That mustache is still bugging me more than ever. :D

I'd say it's quite significant.

I have an HDTV (as of two weeks ago) and I haven't had the chance to watch a SW movie yet - but I might just do that this weekend! Wow!

HD is a bit of a white elephant in my opinion. For one, you need at least a 40" screen to see a difference worth shelling out the cash for, and that's not cheap. Also, a film must be shot in HD for it to be displayed in HD; therefore, SW Episodes 1, 4, 5 and 6 are not true HD, just digitally enhanced. Finally, and most compelling of all, I can see all the detail in those pictures on my 28" standard def TV with my regular DVD.
HD is basically an excuse to (unnecessarily) sell people their movie collections all over again - and would you like a £2,000 TV with that? Cheap at twice the price, eh?

The paper people are definitely less noticeable now :p

Ouch. But still, shiny pics... I mean literally.

I'm HDless myself. As far as HD v DVD goes, it depends on if you have HD TV capabilities of course, but also if you have 'em on HD DVD. :p

Sometimes the HD stuff has a tendency to oversaturate IMO, but the resolution really makes up for that, and you can always tinker with settings I guess.

Beautiful. And I love the fact that you can see the crew reflection in R2's eye.

And, you get these images not with HD-DVD or Blu-Ray... but on-demand. I'm telling you, physical media is a dead end. The future is in downloads. Glad I work for a company with "online" in its name. ;)

Look at the size of Leia's...

Hair? :)

greenandwhitejedi

I completely agree that it's too high of cost right now. That's why I don't have it :)
But no matter how you cut it, HD is simply higher resolution than DVD - even for 1, 4, 5, and 6. It puts detail there that simply wasn't there before... if you have the hardware to see it.

I love the fact that you can see the crew reflection in R2's eye.

Heh, I was looking specifically for an example for that, but never really found one that I thought it was worth mentioning. But I suppose a decent example was staring me in the face!

I suppose it all comes down to whether you think the modicum of extra detail is worth the asking price. For me? No. There's nothing wrong with standard DVD, and I'd say it's got at least a few more years left in it.

I own one. And you are absolutely correct. Anything less than 40" and it's kind of a waste.

Wow. That is seriously cool... and those LOTR pics are wild, too. (Plus, moving the mouse back and forth over 'em is downright trippy.) You've shown me, well, something I never saw as a big deal before.

*stares at all his star wars movie remakes*
YA! who would buy movies over again!

nice pics! we supposedly have an HD TV but I can tell absolutely no difference. I still have no idea what my TVs resolution is soi don't know if I want to buy those expensive HD cords for my next consoles. grr. but those photos did look pretty sweet. I wish I had cinemax. Star wars on TV is a good treat and another reason to watch SW.

hooray. the perfect day ended with a rive blog.

Throne Room Ceremony Look at the size... of that mustache on the far left!

...not to mention the fact that you can actually pick out the silicone fibers in Leia's three-foot-high braid bun...wow.

We have HD, and I watch a lot of football on it. I find myself ducking tackles when I do...I've gotten pretty good at it, although I did get sacked a couple weeks ago...

Oh wait, that wasn't me...

Really cool pictures, Rive, and I vote for HD...and every DVD that comes out! :D

Wow, that really IS amazing.

It really does look like you can feel the texture on the robes!

ANd Han is amazing in the close up!

Oh, and I hope you don't mind, I put the falcon's eye view pic as my puter background, and it is SOOO COOL!!

I agree, that mustache is a bit scary, as is the close up of Luke's hair. Its an odd color.

Thanks for sharing!
