 | The Force Unleashed...ish |
Almost dropped off the map again, didn't I?
Just a few thoughts on the recent announcement of the "Super-Duper Videogame Which Is Likely Just a Test Drive for the Upcoming Star Wars TV Series Set In the Same Time Period".
First up, it slightly aggravates me that the listed systems are...
Platforms: Next-Generation Platforms, Playstation 2, PSP, Nintendo DS
I sincerely hope that will include PC. Why, oh why, do recent companies go to the effort of making an entirely different version for handhelds, a toned down version for PS2 and/or X-BOX, but refuse to make a simple PC port?
Grah.
Anyway, other than that, there's not much to say at this point, since little has been revealed. I'm fairly interested in whether the "Secret Apprentice" is a secret simply due to them wanting you to be able to create your own character looking however you want - like Knights of the Old Republic - or whether they're doing it to allow the Apprentice to be a Cylon.
(Note to the less BSG gifted: A Cylon is a humanoid robot on the television series Battlestar Galactica that is designed to look, feel, and act human (and they have a plan))
Referring to this line...
Decisions made by players throughout the game will determine the path of the story, including multiple endings that will rock Star Wars continuity as they know it.
In theory, this means that events within the game would have to affect things resulting LATER in the timeline, namely Episodes IV-VI and the expanded universe. In effect, this could mean that some unlikely Original Trilogy or Expanded Universe character we all know and love is/was really the "Secret Apprentice" of Darth Vader that helped to cause the extinction of the Jedi. Lobot could be a "Cylon"!
Or, you know, someone more important.
But even so, it only slightly shakes continuity backstory, it's rather unlikely that whoever might be the Secret Apprentice would have a resurgence years after the game takes place... unless it's a Sith we already know, which would make things even less earth shattering.
So... What are your thoughts? What other ways could they "rock Star Wars continuity as we know it"? Without it just being a little shake that puts things back pretty much as they are.
Oh well, hopefully it will be at least as much fun as Jedi Outcast, that's what really matters.

It sounds great, and I'm betting that it wil come out on the xbox platform.
Lucasarts would be dumber then a nerf if they didn't make it for xbox.

Perhaps Yoda was Vader's apprentice, and he just wanted to distract the Emperor (by throwing the Senate at him) and take over the galaxy if he wasn't too darn old.

rock Star Wars continuity as they know it.
When I read that line in the article, my curiosity was sparked.
I've been using the shots that have been in the secrets of 07 set for my desktop picture at work. When I told one of my friends what they were, I told him that would be the first xbox 360 game that I would buy the day it was released. I can't wait.

I am, too, as the only game system I have is Gameboy Advance and it's not mentioned either and I don't play PC games.
That being said...
rock Star Wars continuity as they know it.
We shall see when we see, but I like your idea of throwing a Cylon in the mix. That frakkin' rocks!

Gahmah wonders if the next gen consoles include the Wii. If so, they should release it after they release the other versions, otherwise, you might just get messed up Wii controls and missing content. This happened before with the PSP version of Battlefront 2. They should take their time and not worry about "I want this released at a special time". Both versions of Twilight Princess weren't released at the same time, and the production time had some extensions! Well, good news is it won't be released until sometime in November, and that's pretty far away.

The continuity issue really won't be a big deal. Only one ending (if any) will be canon, and the rest really can be whatever, and will consequently have zero effect on anything outside the game. Given that the whole premise is Vader jumping on the whole Sith way of having an apprentice and killing your master, I'm guessing that one possible ending will involved killing the Emperor, or leading to his death, or maybe killing both Vader and the Emperor and becoming ruler yourself. I personally thin that would be an awesome option.
But while those "rock" the continuity in the sense that they're major alternatives, they really don't "rock" anything because they are just alternatives, nothing actually real.

Like Gahmah said before, like other games that have a Wii version (The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for example, though the Wii version was released first, it was originally a Gamecube title), they shouldn't release it at the same time as the other versions, unless they want a game with tacked-on Wii controls.

You're a sad, strange little man, Rex0. Ha! (Actually, I think its Obi-wan in diguise.)
First.....its like, Rive Caedo...Rive Caedo Lives! Hi Rive!
Second, as is usual, you have some interesting observations to make. After reading your entry, it makes me wonder if Vader is without an apprentice because the one he had eventually 'rebelled'. It seems likely Vader will have an ultimate show-down with this apprentice...in the same vein as the one on the DS2 in Ep. VI.
Having said that, I don't really care. I only have an X-box (I don't even have a 360).

Hey Rive, you can add me to the list of people that are dissappointed that there isn't a PC announcement. PCs always blow consoles out of the water. The technology advances almost every few months. There is only a new console every few years.
And multiplayer would rock on the Internet.
And the continuity? I think the shocking revelation will be that you discover that the Apprentice appears to be a Cylon, but then discover it is actually a Terminator robot from the past pretending to be a Cylon. And he looks like Jubal Early. And he's on a secret mission for the Vatican.

Possible, but I took it more as "if you fufill objective 101B: "Save Kyle Katarn" you see a slightly different ending than if you didn't." You'd see what happened to Kyle just before he accepted the mission to steal the Death Star plans in Dark Forces, but only if you fulfilled the optional objective.

Watch out, they could decide to frak up continuity entirely and make Han the Secret Apprentice
Though I suppose that would add a layer of interest to Vader order the torture/freezing/selling of Han in Empire
And he's on a secret mission for the Vatican.
The Space Vatican. Jeez, you don't know the first thing about writing Sci-Fi, Bith.
Hi Rive!
Ni Hao!
It seems likely Vader will have an ultimate show-down with this apprentice
I suspect they'll bookend the game with something like this. Your first moments in the game will be a training duel with Vader. Then, at the end...

A Cylon is a humanoid robot
You mean a skin job, dontcha? Frakking toasters.
I wish the same for PC games, but I know you just wanna be able to play it on you MOUS (Monitor of Unusual Size). Now if only they'd get to work on a series of lightsaber games for the Wii.
And I'd love to see a game of any kind, that melds BSG and SW. Any programmers out there hear my cry?
Speaking of... I thought you'd at least be interested - Shameless BSG blog plug.

To me it just does not make sense for the developers to exclude the PC for the game. Creating a "mind blowing" SW game but leaving out the popular platforms - well thats doing only half the job. I am still looking forward to it though - 'cause I am frakkin' sucker!

I would be very dissapointed if either 1. No PC. All I've got is a PC and an N64, and I HIGHLY doubt its coming out on N64. 2. No Demo. Thats like my main convincing factor.

Are we being told that a "choose your own adventure" EU-type thing (not really a book) might affect the true backstory of the galaxy?
This is why I stay away from video games and the EU. Now, they have combined forces to torment me.

yay! a rive blog about my favorite topic of them all. time to analyze.
whether the "Secret Apprentice" is a secret simply due to them wanting you to be able to create your own character looking however you want
personally, I think this is doubtful...Create-A-Charater is hard to do, and it signifigantly reduces from the detail of the character, and doesn't turn out as nicely as everyone would like....
rock Star Wars continuity as we know it
Personally, being a gamer, and knowing what gamers what (at least somewhat) I know that "Euphoria", and "Digital Molecular Matter" might just "rock" the gaming community as well. These two pices of software made me drool without even realizing it was Star Wars.

The Secret Apprentice will kill the Emporer! But alas he will live via his cones. But wait a minute think about this. Palps has a quote out there refering to his Death Star death going somthing like this: "It was not the first time I died..." Hmm.....
Probably not though.

I felt the urge to see what the last blog entry you wrote was. Ha!
Have you gotten to play TFU, or are you a PC only type?
"Referring to this line...

Well, that was kind of a farce, except that it was true that there were two different endings at least. Otherwise, the rest of the game is the same no matter what you do. The line above sounds more like what they're talking about for "The Old Republic" now.
