 | Digital Yoda in Episode I |
For the Hyperspace members among us who didn't catch it, here's the first image of a digital Yoda replacing the puppet in Episode 1:
Here's the closest shot I've been able to find of him pre-digital to that one.
Personally I far prefer the digital goodness. I'm a bit worried our 2007 DVD's will have everything replaced by a digital Yoda in Episodes V and VI and that puppet looks just fine to me.
Of course it's worth noting that this is just a "test snippet" as they say that will appear in the DVD and doesn't actually confirm he'll be in Episode I by the 2007 DVD's, I'll leave you with this quote from Rick McCallum's Hyperspace Chat and let you make your own call on that though.
"In the 3d versions or any subsequent versions of the films do you know if Mr.Lucas plans on making anymore changes? like for example inserting a fully digital yoda in The Phantom Menace?"
McCallum: " God, you're good too. I can't answer that without being shot... but easy the future is to see for you."
Up for comment: Is this a positive change for you, or did you prefer the Episode I puppet?
Would you be opposed to Yoda being replaced digitally in Episode V and VI, or would you consider this to be "keeping a trie through the saga" much like Boba Fett's voice being replaced by Jango's in the 2004 DVD's?

I like the puppet in TPM, I think it"s cool that we see Yoda a bit younger. I do admit I like the older look of him much better. I love the puppet's from ESB/ROTJ, but after seeing the CG Yoda in Sith I would gadly welcome that CG version in all the films.

I'd like to have a fully digital Yoda in all of the movies he's in, it just makes it easyer to watch all of the movies in order, instead of watching the first three with a digital one and then in ESB switch to a puppet.
It just doesn't fit, and it kind of distracts the watcher.

I don't really like the Yoda puppet in TPM, I saw it the first time, and he was kinda wierd, as for V and VI, I say keep the puppets.

nothing secred ne more ....im just not sure about a CG yoda i got to admit epI yoda sucked and sucked hard
but the old yoda in CG can u imagin the way yoda acts all crazy and weird in ESB what it would look like in CG im just not sure it would look right
i guess if they match the look up perfect i might be ok with it but i rele like puppet yoda
coments on the "just not fits in right-ness" i think thats somethin to take in consideration

I have to say I don't really like the Ep. I puppet of Yoda. In my opinion, he looks a bit too young. And as for Ep. V and VI, I don't think that they need a digital Yoda to "keep a tie through the saga". The pupet Yoda works just as well (if not better) than digital Yoda. I mean, in some cases they use digital versions of other characters for stunts and such and that's not very distracting to me.

We only need a digital Yoda for TPM that is a big gap in the saga. The puppet in the OT can be explained with old age and trying times. Besides I like the puppet in ESB and ROTJ.

I dont really like Yoda that much in TPM... in ATOC and ROTS he was cool... but in ESB and ROTJ he was the bomb! Anyway, digital yoda in TPM good, digital yoda in ESB and ROTJ...... bad.

Well it seems to be fairly unanimous so far.
TPM puppet = Bearable, but bad
Digital Yoda = Good
Digital Yoda in Empire Strikes + Return of the Jedi = Bad
I agree, I'd like to see a digital version of Yoda as an optional "bonus feature" disabled by default in V and VI however.
That's probably too much to hope for though

I wouldn't mind a digital Yoda in TPM because the puppet looks nothing like the original trilogy Yoda or anything like the digital Yodaso it would be better for continuity. I would be really upset if they changed the Yoda in the OT. I mean what other movie can pull off a puppet as a serious character. Also, I thought it made hime more real and tangible because you could touch him.

I don't really like the digital Yoda. There is something less real about him when he is completely CG. The puppet had weight, texture; you looked at him and you could almost feel what his the wrinkles of his skin, the coarseness of his robe. There are definitely times when the digital Yoda is better - fight scenes, battle scenes, showing emotion on the face. But couldn't they have merged the puppet and the CG image? Used the digital Yoda to make the Yoda in TPM look more the Yoda in ESB (facially), but use the puppet to give it weight?

TPM Yoda puppet looked like an older relative of Yoda than all other versions of Yoda. I think the TPM Yoda would look better digitally rendered.

I agree with Jedi Laurie as well. The EV and EVI has a depth to the character. As for the replacement in the prequels to Digial, Frank Oz and Rob Cole have specifically said via their interview on StarWars.com. that would be "never". Puppet Yoda will remain in EV and EVI. Which I will be more than happy with! I do support the TPM replacement. There was something wrong with that version....
