Two more direct hits and we're done for!
Especially in the video games TIE fighters being at a heavy disadvantage to Rebel ships is emphasized by the TIEs having no shields, while Rebel X-Wings, Y-Wings, B-Wings, A-Wings, E-Wings, etc. have them.

How much use did fighter shields really have in the films however?

With the exception of Wedge and Luke (who take damage anyway) all the Rebel fighters seem to blow up in 1 or 2 hits in the classic trench run.

Of course you could argue that it was simply because they didn't have the capabillity to "show" a shield effect in the classic films, however in the Prequel Trilogy...

Jedi Fighters supposedly had minimal shielding, but it didn't seem to help much anyway when Plo Koon gets shot down in RotS (Mark I Jedi Starfighter) or when Anakin tries to shoot the Buzz Droids off Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter (Mark II).

The Falcon takes quite a few hits, but that's larger than a fighter :)

So what's your opinion? Do X-Wings really have an advantage over TIEs through their shielding? Or like I say, is shielding on fighters just about as useful as stormtrooper armor? :)

i think x-wings were just hit in critical places,or they were hit a lot without being filmed

I think that you make a good point, perhaps the Alliance "Shield" was just a feel good red button.

I think the shields do really help. Except maybe sometimes they have their sheilds in front and someone gets them in the back or the sheilds are fully on the back and someone shoots them in the front. Sometimes like maldorian said they get hit in critical places.

the x-wings would only be able to carry a small shield genarator and could only shield one part at a time.

Waaaaahh! Why were they shot down... in one hit??? Probably the Rebel Alliance was not that well funded at the Battle of Yavin, and not all had shields or has lousy ones. After their victory, people were more confident in joining and helping the Rebels, so there shields were better in ESB and ROTJ.

Having played X-Wing: Alliance I seem to remember that you could re-route power from the shields to your engines, therefore getting better speed but losing out on shielding. Similarly, you could slow down and boost your shield power.

Not sure if this is the in-universe answer, or just gameplay.

Perhaps the rebel pilots at the Battle of Yavin had sacrificed some shield juice for some speed.

That's actually a very good in-universe answer Rogueish. Since they were trying to go fast enough to evade the turbolasers.

Interesting that Wedge is one of the few pilots to survive a shot though AFTER Luke says "We're going in. We're going in full throttle."

Oh well, no perfect answer I suppose :)
