Rick McCallum talks Star Wars TV
Hyperspace members were treated to an audio recording of a Question and Answer session with Rick McCallum on Friday. Instead of just spouting out purely things we'd already heard he offered this tidbit.

"we're just starting to interview writers and trying to really figure out, you know, which direction. It is going to be much darker much grittier it's much more character based. "

Now he did just talk about the new animated show based off Clone Wars before talking about the live-action series, so he could have just been saying it'll be darker, grittier, and more character based than that. How often have you heard of a live-action show being "Grittier" than a cartoon though? That's a no brainer.

So I think it's more likely he was referring to it being darker, grittier, and more character based than say... Episode III or at least the saga as a whole. Which makes sense; these will be the Dark Times after the Empire takes control but before the Rebellion really starts to operate. Jedi on the run, Stormtroopers keeping the populace in line, Crime Lords beginning to hold more sway in the underworld as more people (Jedi among them as evidenced in "Evasive Action: Recruitment" the Hyperspace exclusive webstrip) are being pushed into the lower rungs of society (Particularly aliens now being oppressed by the Empire). Cool!

In my mind this is all good stuff, hopefully we'll get something along the lines of (dare I mention it again?) the show Firefly, making each episode a distinct adventure while contributing to the overall storyline. Making events referenced back to allowing characters to grow. Basically I don't want us to get something like Star Trek. Don't get me wrong I do like Star Trek. Star Wars demands something greater though, characters who don't forget what they did in the last episode, characters that change due to specific events.

Rick seems to be indicating this, let's make sure they know we'll support it.
