All kidding aside you should seriously see this film regardless if you saw the short running TV show it was based off of, Firefly, or not. There's only a few nods to the TV series you'll miss out on, and they're not even in the dialogue. (See those dinosaurs on the pilot console? That's a nod to the TV series).

If for some reason you prefer to trust my whims utterly and completely I suggest you buy the complete series of Firefly on DVD via overnight shipping and see the film after you've watched that

The film is nearly perfect, I think if they had added 5 minutes or so towards the end they wouldn't have needed to rush things there a bit, but that's a minor detail at worst.

The music is different from the series, but fits better cinematically anyway.

Acting is top notch in my opinion, provided you can pick up on what River is talking about in some important scenes (She mumbles a bit).

Don't want to give anything at all away because all the jokes, action, and plot points are awesome.

Star Wars is already a success but this one needs your help to stay alive. You'll want a sequel, I promise.
