 | Order to watch the movies: Analysis: Part 2 |
Well I just noticed one of my old blogs had "Part 1" in the title, I have no idea what I orignally planned to do with Part 2, but here goes something new anyway.
A friend recently put forth this order to me.
___________________
IV, I, V, II, III, IV, V, III, VI
___________________
A bit of a fragmented order to be sure, but here's what you get.
Episode IV: A solid introduction to the universe that most of us started out with, a great way to start to be sure. You don't know who Vader is.
Episode I: Skip back 30 years, you have another Skywalker now, but no connection to Vader. So basically you're getting the story of Luke's father before he became a Jedi Knight and "followed old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade." The viewer will hopefully assume that all of the councils "Clouded this boy's future is" is supposed to be alluding to Vader killing him.
Episode V: Drop back into Luke's life being pursued by the man who killed young Anakin the viewer now knows. Holy hell! That IS Anakin Skywalker. How did THAT happen?
Episode II + III: Well that's how that happened. You do ruin the fact that Luke and Leia are twins though.
Episode IV + V again (Optional): Lets the viewer see IV and V from a new perspective.
Episode III again if IV and V were watched again: Sets up Anakin's fall again for the viewer for...
Episode VI: Here you are, the end of the saga. You met Luke and Vader, then you met his father, then found out Vader was his father. Found out how that happened. Then finally get to see the full circle of Anakin's redemption.
So there you have it. You get the best introduction to the saga in my opinion, where things really heat up, Episode IV. Then you get to see Episode I from a unique perspective, knowing that he's Luke's father, but you think he's doomed to be killed by Vader not actually become him. Boom! Episode V you get the big plot twist unspoiled. Head back into Episode II and III back story for how that happened. Then see the saga conclude.
Any major problems with this setup?

Interesting Idea here. The only thing you would have to tell the viewer is "No questions asked"-ever. If they do it will ruin stuff. You would also have to watch them back to back right away or the confusion from spread apart viewings would be killer.
Also-what about other characters like Yoda or Obi-wan(Whos the green guy) (Wait I thought his name was Ben Kenobi)-although he is called Obi-wan a few times in ANH...
Intriguing idea.

I actually just watched them in the order of IV, I, V, II, VI, III. Very intersesting, keeping up with both storylines.

this is a cool idea , but only if you've seen them before. Otherwise I suggest watching them as they were made .Had I watched them starting w/ ep1 I don't think I would love them so much.

umm just a thought............... but why not just watch them in order?.....like LOTR, as one whole story.

I personnaly think that watching them in order is the best way. That's 1 big story. Of course, it ruins the punch about Vader being Luke's father and Leia being his sister. But seriously, in 2005, who in the world doesn't know that Vader is Luke's father? Even people who never saw it knows it.
I showed them in order to someone who never saw them, and the punches just work great anyway. We know Vader is Luke's father, but HOW will he learn it? What is reaction be? Will he ever notice that the girl he kissed is his sister? Gross.
It still work pretty well from 1 to 6.

kingconan77: Because LOTR was made in one burst, straight forward. Star Wars wasn't. If you watch them 1-6 you don't get any shock from "Luke I am your father"
Vader7355: This starts with IV, not I
Independentjac: Yeah, assuming you do the optional re-watching 3 of them.
Obi-Wan plays fairly well into this order Andy, Yoda... Hm... You would know that he's Yoda before seeing Episode V, that is a bit of a drawback... He does look pretty dang different in Episode I though, so if you mute the TV the only time he's called Yoda by name while he's in the room (one of the final scenes, when he grants Obi-Wan the rank of Knight) it might work for a bit of shock.
Is that the same guy? It is!

i support IV V VI I II III!
The greatest reason is, well, No, I am your father. line can have the
biggest effect for future generation who knows nothing about Star Wars.
This is my favourite line of movies ever!
Starts from IV allows us to uncover the mystery of Skywalker Family,
origin of Vader, how Republic fall, why Jedi extinct, how Palpatine
rise etc...
Star Wars begin in IV in 1977, so that should be how we watch it

Star Wars begin in IV in 1977, so that should be how we watch it
Lucas doesn't envision it that way.
Good idea, but it's ruined if you've watched them already. I haven't seen ROTS yet, so...
 You havn't seen ROTS yet!?

i usualy dont sit down and watch them all
not to say i havnt during summer break from skool ive had a couple dedicated to the OT and then the PT
id say watch em OT then PT keeps the surprise fresh
or in numerical order it makes more sence cuz u keep the story together

Out of order watching should be something that is fun, IF you are totally familiar with the movies beforehand.

Sounds like an interesting way 2 watch the movies but seems like it might be confusing . The worst thing about seeing them IV - III is that when u see ROTS u know that almost all the jedi will die and so u expect it and u already know that Anakin will fall to the darkside .

jediknight2210:
ya i know George didnt see it that way, but as a fan for years,
i think only through the OT to the PT allows fans to uncover
all the secrets in the Republic old days bit by bit... and that's
how this generation usually watch them... we waited for
little Ani, waited for the Clone Wars, waited for Anakin's
ultimate fall, waited for the Purge......
I cant agree with George, really. watch in order will ruin many
interesting moments

A very interesting idea, but I think it would be great for repeat viewers only. I'm old school and still like the OT then the PT and I'm sure the new viewer would want to see them in order after that.

I'll just watch the saga as it is numbered - from Episode I (TPM) to Episode VI (ROTJ).

ultimatly, the best way to watch them is in the order of release, 4, 5, 6, then 1, 2 ,3 as a 2 part story. giving you the shock value of " luke, i am your father", then seeing how this all happened, which is the way lucas wanted you to see it. This is why the trilogy starts @ 4, because the best part of these stories, according to Lucas were told first. We wanted to see what brought the dark side out in Anikin, ...enter TPM, TCW, and ROTS..that's how i saw them....so for the new borns, and aliens out there who for some reason never saw the movies.. there you have it.
