Well I saw
Darth Rex's Blog and decided I couldn't sum up my thoughts in simply a 750 character comment
Rex is correct that in a direct plot perspective, Anakin's "father" doesn't matter, be it the force, Palpatine, Plaguis, the Whills, or even Qui-Gon. In any case the story turns out the same.
It
does matter though from a perspective outside of direct plot.
Rex is correct that according to the hero cycle something has to be strange or special about the archetypal hero's birth. There's a vast difference between Anakin being born of the force itself or of Sith tampering however.
The Will of the Force: This puts Anakin in the position of messiah type figure and indeed more closely fits with the "Chosen One" title. It effects the global story and morals by placing the spin most widely accepted at the present time. Anakin was the Chosen One destined to bring balance to the force...
yada yada yada, there are plenty of blogs on that and I don't want to turn this into one. The point being: The force itself creating Anakin as an immaculate birth is consistent with the theme we're currently attributing to the story.
The Sith created Anakin: While one could argue it was still the Will of the Force, this weakens several themes in the story, such as the Sith using the force for their own means rather than trusting in it, so it seems unlikely. The Sith creating Anakin has massive implications; the theme of the story switches from Anakin's redemption: one recovering from a fall to darkness. To Anakin's life itself: one
defying their own destiny. Anakin being
engineered specifically to be strong in the force and susceptible to the Dark Side turns him into something of a
force abomination rather than a Chosen One. Anakin eventually overcomes the Dark Lord he was designed from birth. A noble theme to be sure but it focuses more on Anakin's strength than the Force's Will.
Does it matter if the Sith had a hand in Anakin's creation? Absolutely. It completely changes how you look at his eventual return to the light.
Does it affect the actual plot if we never find out the truth behind Anakin's birth? No, not really. Just the themes and motivations of characters.
Though the Sith creating Anakin would be more unique to Star Wars, I prefer the Will of the Force however. If we are to accept Anakin truly being "
The Chosen One" that is. If he was created by the Will of the Force alone then Palpatine was lying about the powers of Plaguis, true to his character, the Sith can never achieve immortallity through such selfish means as
Qui-Gon said. And I think we should trust him a bit more than Palpatine
