The Origin of Anakin really does matter.
Well I saw Darth Rex's Blog and decided I couldn't sum up my thoughts in simply a 750 character comment :)

Rex is correct that in a direct plot perspective, Anakin's "father" doesn't matter, be it the force, Palpatine, Plaguis, the Whills, or even Qui-Gon. In any case the story turns out the same.

It does matter though from a perspective outside of direct plot.

Rex is correct that according to the hero cycle something has to be strange or special about the archetypal hero's birth. There's a vast difference between Anakin being born of the force itself or of Sith tampering however.

The Will of the Force
: This puts Anakin in the position of messiah type figure and indeed more closely fits with the "Chosen One" title. It effects the global story and morals by placing the spin most widely accepted at the present time. Anakin was the Chosen One destined to bring balance to the force... yada yada yada, there are plenty of blogs on that and I don't want to turn this into one. The point being: The force itself creating Anakin as an immaculate birth is consistent with the theme we're currently attributing to the story.

The Sith created Anakin: While one could argue it was still the Will of the Force, this weakens several themes in the story, such as the Sith using the force for their own means rather than trusting in it, so it seems unlikely. The Sith creating Anakin has massive implications; the theme of the story switches from Anakin's redemption: one recovering from a fall to darkness. To Anakin's life itself: one defying their own destiny. Anakin being engineered specifically to be strong in the force and susceptible to the Dark Side turns him into something of a force abomination rather than a Chosen One. Anakin eventually overcomes the Dark Lord he was designed from birth. A noble theme to be sure but it focuses more on Anakin's strength than the Force's Will.

Does it matter if the Sith had a hand in Anakin's creation? Absolutely. It completely changes how you look at his eventual return to the light.
Does it affect the actual plot if we never find out the truth behind Anakin's birth? No, not really. Just the themes and motivations of characters.

Though the Sith creating Anakin would be more unique to Star Wars, I prefer the Will of the Force however. If we are to accept Anakin truly being "The Chosen One" that is. If he was created by the Will of the Force alone then Palpatine was lying about the powers of Plaguis, true to his character, the Sith can never achieve immortallity through such selfish means as Qui-Gon said. And I think we should trust him a bit more than Palpatine :D

I have to disagree with you about the sith creating Anakin. Why would the sith want to create Ankain? The prophecy says that he was created by the will of the force. He fulfilled the prophecy, so its obvious the prophecy was correct.

Disagree? Hm... I didn't actually say they created him I said, like many, that it was a possiblity.
They wanted to create him in order to have a powerful apprentice.
I could be mistaken but all we know of the actual prophecy is that the Chosen One would "Bring balance to the Force and destroy the Sith." Nothing about being formed by the living force.

Whether or not the Sith or the force itself did it. He was still created by means of the force.

Let's Examine the prophecy first:

The Rise of Darkness, which is actually the larger picture
of the prophecy (AOTC Novel)

During the time of darkness a Chosen One will be born and bring
balance to the Force (Jedi Prophecy, Prequels)

A Sith'ari will bring glory and rule the Sith but eventually destroy
the Sith and bring balance to the Force (Sith Prophecy, KOTOR)

Now it depends how deep The Will of the Force control:

If The Will of the Force = Destiny of the Whole Galaxy,
then every being, every thing, every event, and i mean
it is really EVERYTHING was already set.

Anakin's birth, no matter from normal biological father,
Sith's hands, or direct creation by the Force would not
affect anymore, IF The Will of the Force defines EVERYTHING

ROTS novel:

According to Anakin, his own Force Vision was never wrong.
And by far it never proves wrong.

According to Anakin, Force Vision arent absolute, but his Vision
is absolute.

According to Yoda in ESB, of course there is the famous line
Always in motion the future is.

Personally, i believe Yoda is wrong, the future is actually set.
Obi-Wan also stated that all of them have no choise but surrender
to the Will of the Force

Good retort Rive. I agree with you on many points. I think though that it just gets too complicated when trying to determine where he exactly comes from. When you start talking about the "Will of the Force" you start getting into some touchy subjects which are not answered easily. Wrath of the Whills has done some good blogging (and too many blogs to list here) with some eye raising subject matter. I agree it is an important issue, its just neccassary to blow your mind up thinking about it. I guess I was just really frustrated when I wrote that blog, though I still agree with my points. Good blogging and I respect your opinion and keep up the good work.

I use to think that the will of the force created Anakin as the chosen one. But after seeing Episode 3, I have a new theory. Maybe Palpatine created Anakin, so he could mold him into what he wanted. Palpatine befriended him. He also became his confidant and convinced Anakin that he was the only one who appreciated his talents. Palpatine manipulated Anakins mind, and made him think that the Jedi were against him and jealous of him. It all boils down to his weakness. It was his weakness for Padme that ultimately caused his fall into the dark side. It was also his weaknes for his son Luke that brought him back to the good side.
