Well, unless you're on the East Coast, in which case you've
probably already missed it,
Sci-Fi channel is airing the
first episode of Firefly tonight (perhaps less than 5 mintues from now depending on where you live!) and I'm somewhat doubt if they'll run the series for a third time after this.
So this could very well be your last chance to see Firefly if you don't plan to buy the DVD's
Instead of making this just a "It's good, watch it" blog as a bonus I've written 10 little things that might make Firefly more enjoyable for first time viewers, however if you'd like to watch with a completely clean slate and figure out things as you go along, don't read it. Just watch.
Yay for making the blog somewhat useful more than 4 hours from now

Ten Things to know when watching Firefly:
1. It takes place about 500 years from now.
2. Han Solo is the father of Mal (the captain).
.....
Ok not really. The creator of the show
DID have Han in mind when he designed the show however. So keep Han's smuggling past in mind as you watch the show to make some Star Wars connections
3. The ship is
not called "
Firefly" that's the
type of ship it is. The ship's name is "
Serenity", you'll pick up on this fairly quickly, but it's a common misconception.
4. There are no aliens, they're not coming, stop waiting, move on.
5. This is a bit more realistic than Star Wars, and maintains that it's physically impossible to move faster than the speed of light. There's also no sound in space like it would be in reality.
6. The war you see at the beginning of the show was between the inner planets consisting of the last two superpowers (United States + China) against the border planets. Due to China having such wide reach now, most characters can speak Chinese (they'll mostly just use it for cursing, however...)
7. Mei-Mei = Little Sister in Chinese
Dong Ma? = Understand in Chinese
All other Chinese: Insert your favorite curse.
8. Prostitutes are well respected and influential. You never find out exactly *how* this happened over the course of 500 years, just accept it.
9. The show is
somewhat based around the Civil War, you'll probably pick up on this, but if you don't.
Alliance = The North
Independents = The South
10. After you see all the episodes go buy
Serenity on DVD. The movie sequel to the show.
And buy
Firefly on DVD if you like it enough for repeat viewing. Which I think is doubtless, but I may be biased
