Star Wars: The TV Show: Episode IX
Well, based on the advice of the same people who made me buy Firefly (thank you) I went out and purchased season 1 of the the new Battlestar Galactica.

And although I had heard about this from the original series... Yeah, a BSG Viper wouldn't exactly be out of place amongst some X-Wings, even if I wouldn't call it a direct rip-off :p

The other main thing setting it apart of course is even when our heros are in their "Almost but not quite X-wing"s the camera has a distinct "Handheld" effect with camera shakes, focus blurs, and off-centering. The same effects were used in Firefly (the same special effects company, Zoic, did both shows) but was less evident due to lack of actual space battles with bullets and lasers and such
I happen to love it, feels less computer generated and more real :)

Comment Guy #1 who didn't bother to read the whole blog:
"Why does this belong on Starwars.com?"
Quiet you! *throws a hydrospanner at Comment Guy #1*

I could actually just ramble off about the show itself for awhile and I'm sure I'll do that in some point in the future after I've seen a few more episodes (I'm currently on disc 3 of 5), but for now I'll relate it directly to Star Wars.

This is what Star Wars TV should be.

Ok ok fine, you need to replace the word "Cylon" with "Imperial" and thus "Cylon Infiltrator" with "Imperial Spy", and of course marketting means they'd need to throw in a couple lightsabers, but other than that... This is pretty close to what I'd like Star Wars TV to be.

A few months back I made a bit of a joke entry in which I suggested an idea for how Star Wars TV should be... Which was basically the plot of Firefly with a few Star Wars adjectives thrown in. Don't get me wrong, I still think a Star Wars smuggler show could be great, but Battlestar Galactica reflects something much closer to the idea of Star Wars we already have.

A ragtag fleet of Rebels (Colonials) on the constant run from the might of the Empire (Cylons), doing what they can to survive in the hostile universe.

There's your basic plot.

Of course there are thousands of possible episode stories to tell here since they could visit any planet in the Star Wars Universe, but where Battlestar Galactica really shines for me is that even if they have alot of special effects and space battles thrown in, it's really the characters it's all about.

I care what happens to Apollo and Starbuck.

That's what the prequels were missing for me, I didn't care about the characters. I knew what was going to happen to them.
That's also why I completely agree that no main characters should have a susbstantial role in the TV Series, we know what happens to them. There's no element of surprise. Han Solo, Vader, Leia, Luke, R2, Boba Fett, etc etc etc can't die. We don't care what happens to them because we know what happens to them already.

I want to care what happens to Captain Newguy when he straps into that X-Wing.
