 | 101 Reasons Firefly is better than Star Wars! |
No I'm not asking for your input (but if you've seen the show go ahead!)... I actually made a list. It's a quickly made likely fairly repetitive list... But it's a list. Let no blogger say Rive lets things fall between the cracks! Let no blog goer say Rive writes 2 line blogs and publishes just to get on the front page! *cough*
Firefly... The little show that tried and failed. Then sold a billion DVDs and became a movie. That movie failed. Then it sold a billion DVDs and will hopefully become another movie or another TV show.
Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars (My 90 so entries and constant commenting can prove that), but if they aired new episodes of Firefly at the same time as Star Wars TV... Star Wars would probably be the one getting recorded to my TIVO to watch afterward.
I'd also like to direct you to this image which is along the same theme
Han Solo vs. Malcolm Reynolds
Sure I'm going to cheat a bit,
but here we go!
_______________________________________________________
1. Serenity is just as much of a piece of junk as the Falcon, but it can't cheat by going to lightspeed.
2. Sure, let's go off that one for a moment. No Hyperdrive. If our heroes are in trouble, they stay in trouble. No cheating.
3. It has the "Lived in" look that was missing from the Prequel's but so essential in the Original Trilogy.
4. No super weapons.
5. The love/relationship dialogue doesn't make you want to gouge your eyes out.
6. If somebody says "Let me see your identification" the other guy better have some identification!
7. Our heroes aren't surrounded by an anti-get-shot field.
8. That is proven nearly every episode.
9. Wait... Probably every episode... "Kaylee noooo!" "Wash, baby!" "Captain?!" "Nadie!" "Sheppard? Sheppard? Stay with me!" "Ah! He shot my gorram leg!"
10. Gorramit!
11. Shiny!
12. Dong ma?
13. Going along with the "No hyperdrive" thing, there's no sound in space. This is a fairly realistic show! All the drama comes from the music in space.
14. Malcolm Reynolds is basically the son of Han Solo, we missed our fix in the Prequels, so get it here.
15. SSSSSSAAAAAFFFFFRRRRRROOOONNNNN!!!!!!!!!
16. If somebody dies, they stay dead. No force ghosting to help.
17. River, the Reaver slayer.
18. Staying on that topic. Reavers! Who doesn't like space zombies?!
19. It recognizes the truth... A bullet kills just as well as a blaster.
20. I don't know why this is coming this late, but the jokes! Every joke and one-liner is as unforgettable as almost any Star Wars line.
21. The Alliance (the Empire) actually seems to be in control... Ships don't have guns on them.
22. Artificial intelligence is pretty much unheard of. Sorry, no 3PO.
23. Holograms are used sparingly.
24. Communication is limited, similar to not being able to go light speed. You need to be fairly close to talk.
25. Mal always shoots first. Han could learn a thing or two.
26. Wash
27. Mal
28. Book
29. Kaylee
30. Inara
31. Jayne
32. River
33. Simon
34. Zoe
35. Serenity
36. The Operative
37. Dobson
38. Niska!
39. No shields... If you get hit, you're gonna feel it.
40. Horses are still a major form of transportation. Closest we see to this is Eopees.
41. Hardly in little kids and none yelling Yipee!
42. No aliens... It grounds you and doesn't distract.
43. Majority of CGI is used to tell the story, not show off.
44. Certain things about Inara I can't mentioned on this website...
45. Assuming they don't get John Williams to do the music for the Star Wars TV show, this music will probably be better than it.
46. The fans are often even crazier and more obsessed than Star Wars fans (that could be a bad thing though I suppose)
47. The ships have bathrooms.
48. Chinese is already a complete language, no need to mess around with Mando'a
49. The characters often do what you would do... Before you can even think of it. Not much "Why did Anakin do THAT?!"
50. DVD came with way better special features than Star Wars (3 new episodes!)
51. Did I mention the writing is excellent? Characters talk over one another. People have motives. It's a real world.
52. Hardly any technobabble, this is fairly equal with Star Wars, but still worth mentioning.
53. Quite a few (unresolved) plot twists!
54. Rose from the dead to become a movie (Star Wars was pretty successful right off the bat)
55. SPIKED! Er... Memorable moments, yes that's it.
56. Related to the above... If somebody as cool as Mace Windu dies... he's gone.
57. Expanded Universe material is often written by the creator, not ignored.
58. Characters are more relatable than Jedi...
59. Focus on character depth rather than galactic struggles
60. Touches on themes generally shyed away from by other television shows. Such as religion.
61. Blue Sun... Watch for it.
62. Shuttles have retractable wings.
63. Engines look powerful enough to actually break atmosphere and such... B-Wings sure don't.
64. Firefly equivalent of Star Destroyers look like they could land (Now I'm just running out of ideas, just so you know).
65. No politics.
66. Theme song gets stuck in your head... But you don't hate it.
67. (Let's do another lazy moment and just list the episodes, why are they better than Star Wars? Because they're all better than Attack of the Clones ) Serenity
68. The Train Job
69. Bushwhacked
70. Shindig
71. Safe
72. Our Mrs. Reynolds
73. Jaynestown
74. Out of Gas
75. Ariel
76. War Stories
77. Trash
78. The Message
79. Heart of Gold
80. Objects in Space
81. Serenity (The Movie)
82. Comic book series contains essential plot points bridging the TV show to the movies, rather than background information.
83. Comic book series is true to the feel of the TV series, due to being written by the same people!
84. Creator posts with fans! Let's see George Lucas do that!
85. Primary actors post with fans! Let's see Ewan McGreggor do that!
86. Conveys the idea of "Some things are fine the way they are", keyboards are still used!
87. No gaping plot holes. Mal remembers his droids.
88. No thermal exhaust ports to help our hero save the day.
89. Some of heroes may still have hearts of gold... But they don't forget what life is really about sometimes... Money.
90. No constantly recurring villains. There's even a joke about that.
91. Strawberries are rare, along with other fruits... and you believe it!
92. Other... Strawberry... Kaylee... Things... I'll be in my bunk.
93. A few little salutes to the fans in the movie, even if it was sort of a new beginning.
94. Actors seem to enjoy being in it the whole time.
95. Despite being a failed series, a movie that wasn't a rousing success, and the like... It has it's own convention.
96. All but one of the primary actors showed up at the convention, even eating with attendees.
97. No "Chosen One" to throw symbolism in your face.
98. Made in chronological order
99. No midiclorians
100. Hidden smuggling compartments are used for... Smuggling!
101. Keep Flying (What do you meant that's a statement and not a reason!? Blast it! I've run out of things! The title is a lie now! Noooooooooooooo!)
_______________________________________________________
Hope you had fun if you read the entire rambling list, I think I threw a joke or two in there? Maybe not... I'm pretty tired now and could be imaging things. I'll be lucky if it's even numbered right!
