Hello hello hello (I decided to put one for all three of you that decided this was worth reading to the end) and welcome to another blog semi-rant.

I actually think the site as a whole has been vastly improving so this is probably the lightest weight rant I've done. It might not even be a rant. More a gentle suggestion. :)

And besides, I've been drawing a blank for topics to write about all week. Need somethin' up here new to ensure people I haven't died and am deserving of Rive Caedo brand divider lines to be posted in my honor. :p

Uh... if you want something directly Star Wars related I threw this together... It's a motivational poster for those who think Star Wars TV would be just fine without a Jedi around every corner

Stop askin' and Start tellin': Don't Write for Comments

Apparently I've been counted among the non-VIP elite here because once every few weeks I recieve an E-Mail (via the "Contact Blogger" function) asking me a question along the lines of "What kind of blogs should I write?" or "How should I write my blogs"

My standard responce has been "It's your blog, write about what you want to or you'll quickly grow tired of it. You also might want to keep in mind what you would want to read and try to write along those lines"

After reading this blog and going to add a brief comment... I'd like to add an addendum to that for anyone who's recieved that and non-Hyperspacers who may become bloggers in the future. All other bloggers who haven't ever written a 2 line blog or asked why Mace Windu's saber is purple should probably move along. Nothin' to see here :)

Pretend your comments are off.

You don't need to actually turn them off, but while writing that's the real test to see if it's quality material I'd say. If the writing speaks for itself. If you're satisfied with knowing somebody might have read it even if you won't get direct feedback. And most importantly: That the comments won't be longer than your entry. :D

Ok Mr. Caedo, are you really one to talk anyway? You almost always end your entries with a question to commenters!

Sure I do. I don't personally think that's a bad thing to give people a general direction or "writing prompt" for their comments. Take away the last line or two on most my blogs though, which is generally the one giving a direction for comments to start off, isn't it still a complete thought? Doesn't it still inform, entertain, or get the reader thinking? Is it any less complete without hitting the "Read or Post Comments" box?

I believe Dark Moose was the first to use the analogy and I've mentioned it before as well. Your blog is like a speech (or in the very least an announcement). The comments are either a literal comments field where people in the audience can submit thoughts on what they'd like to hear from you in future speeches, what the liked, and what they didn't like. It can also act as a question and answer or discussion session after the speech. "Wait, why did you say that?" "But why didn't you explain..." "But Mace Windu's saber had gold on it!" "I luv Anakin. He's so hot! :x "

Ok... Maybe that last one was a bad example :)

In sum... Still write what you want to write about. But make sure you have something to write about! Don't make others do the writing for you!

Can a blog be less than 750 characters (the limit for a comment)?

Yes.

Should it be?

No

Well there you go. There's my speech. Any questions? Comments? Declarations of War? Whatever it is, I bet it won't be longer than my entry. And that's the way it should be :D

Unrelated Note: I have big plans for Entries 98, 99 and 100... Big plans of course meaning "A really long blog nobody in their right minds would be interested in reading". So there might be a long hiatus before entry 101 when y'all might want to start reading again :D

I have absolutely no plans for Entry 97 however.
Perhaps I'll do a piece on the art of juggling geese.

We all saw those Pansy-Jedi fall to blasters in the Temple. I always knew Han had it right.

I'll do a piece on the art of juggling geese.

I call a piece on Shadow Puppetry in war camps.

Everything you say is right! Somebody needs to post a blog like this every month or so to make sure bloggers keep themselves in check. I will enjoy seeing your big plans for entries 98, 99, 100. I am curious now that you are nearing entry 100 to ask you the same question you asked me when I reached 100 a few months ago- What percentage of your blog space is used up?

I like Moose's speech analogy. I had heard that from him before, it works well. As long as no comments are longer than your blog you are OK. Sad thing is I just wrote some comments a few minutes ago that I can assure were 2 times the size of the guy's blog!:^O

Pretend your comments are off.

Although I will always be humble about my bag of blogs, what I got out of it didn't increase until I took that comment into consideration. I really didn't know what a blog was about when I started. I knew what I liked to read in a blog and I tried to copy that. It didn't work. Once I took the approach of an online diary, it took off for me. I don't write for comments, but they are fun to read. Coincidently, my comments whent way up when I stopped "caring" about them.

P.S. Nice use of lines throughout the blog

What percentage of your blog space is used up?

65% :D
Did you ever actually tell me how much you had/have used up anyway? :)

I just wrote some comments a few minutes ago that I can assure were 2 times the size of the guy's blog!

As did I... X-(

Coincidently, my comments whent way up when I stopped "caring" about them.

Absolutely! I'm still shocked at how many I often get on these now-a-days compared to back when I wrote a few "comment-bait" blogs. Nothing 2 line mind you. But certainly shorter than I write today. :D

I've noticed that too. My last few blogs have even reached the limit, not bad for a scruffy blogger with a five-comment record.

On a related note, I must add that I can't stand it when bloggers demand comments after writing a two-line entry. In my humble opinion, comments are earned, not demanded. I've made it a practice never to comment on those two-liners, because it's not worth my time to give a lazy blogger attention they don't deserve.

I think to keep his "mod" status he has to produce so many words a week of well........moose crap.

I have filled up 40%, Rive as of now. I will admit that my blogs are generally shorter than your as you call them "rants" but they are most certainly more than 750. I have had at leats 15 that have been 2-3 pages when I typed them into word. My Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker series took up 18 pages in word!
