Okay, first off, I will state that I am an excellent speller. Not boasting, I just am. I was the spelling champ of my class twice in Junior High. I'm just good at it. Why? Because I read so much. Oh, and that Catholic school thing too.
But I will freely admit there are some words that still give me the occasional trip-up; the word "occasional" itself being an excellent example (I always wanna write "occa isional"). I also have problems with the word "rhythm".
So I'm not perfect speller. Nobody is. But I cringe at the horrendous spelling that I've seen on various message boards & chat rooms around the internet. I mean, there are common misspellings and such ("teh" instead of "the"; "wierd" instead of "weird"), but I attribute such goof-ups to simple transposings of the letters as you type. I do it too. But there are typos, and then there is total, complete illiteracy. Stuff that makes you say "What the hell...?" This is what I'm talking about. I'm not talking simple transposed letters, I'm talking complete bungling of word spellings. You all know what I mean.
So even though I wince at some horribly misspelled words I find on board postings, I can't help but laugh hysterically at some of the clunkers out there. And so, I'd like to share with you some of the more memorable flubs I've come across. My apologies if I've included any of your own mistakes, dear bloggers, but what can I say? I have a black belt in schadenfreude.
But be honest folks. How many of you have cracked up over reading a word that was atrociously spelled??? See? We've all been there. So without further ado...

Heh heh - the two students at Thesaurus U sound kind of like Obi Wan and Yoda conspiring to get a beverage
Yeah - I admit, my keyboard is a little slippery at times, and my motivation to proof-read... that's slippery too
This comment was brought to you by my procrastination to do other stuff.

WTH?? hmmmm....Ok then. Enough said, I think?
Just to kind of simmer things down for the people of this here Community, these Blogs are written for fun and to express our own individual thoughts/ideas on the Star Wars Saga. We as a whole, try not to judge others as we are all subsequent (from time to time) to imperfections.
Lets not poke fun at our fellow bloggers, we are a tight knit family. No one wants to feel that they are being graded on their own personal thoughts, right?

Horrid spelling on the net kills me too! This is partly why I quit talking on MSN, as people refuse to use real words... incredibly odd. But 99.9% of people here in blogsville use proper english, which is (a incredibly small part of) why I read so many blogs here!
I saw a comic in the paper that relates (perhaps a bit loosely) to this topic:
ZITS - By Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman
[boy types on cell phone while sitting beside father] I don't have anything 2 say. Im just sending u this txt meg bcuz the tapping drives my dad crazy
I thought this was amusing, anyways...

I understand what you mean, VA2, but I have to tell you, I wasn't poking fun at any specific person. Most of these spelling gaffes were taken from TheForce.Net, and a bunch from Dark Horse's site.
If you were writing a post, and accidentally typed "The 3 Skywalker children" and didn't correct it, do you realize how many fellow fans would pounce on you for writing that? I mean, some wouldn't bother to consider that you might have just made a typo, and they would have ridiculed you for it instead. These are the kind of people I laugh at.

So, VA2, I'm sorry if you took offense. Those who know me know that I'm a snarky, cynical, and sarcastic guy. Can't help my nature. I was raised and educated to believe good spelling is paramount, and I maintain that belief.

Can't help my nature. I was raised and educated to believe good spelling is paramount, sure, blame the Catholic school system!!!
*ahem* now, in all seriousness, i do understand EXACTLY what you mean. i will be the first to admit that when i e-mail and psot i don't bother with capitals (it just slows me down, and i tend to think faster than i type, which also leads to the letter switches and omissions you described). and like JKT, i don't aways proofread, because i know you guys will understand if i goof every now and then.

HOWEVER, as a teacher, i have to say this - we may read enough of each other's stuff to know that we are thoughtful, intelligent human beings, even the poor spellers among us - but most people don't understand that IN THE REAL WORLD, YOU ARE REPRESENTED BY WHAT YOU PUT ON PAPER. (i say that at least 10 times a day!!!)
i mean, sure, we all make mistakes, but i do see stuff on the 'net that just makes me say, "Huh!?!?!" . . . unfortunately, i also see it far too much at school. this generation is being allowed to go through school without learning how to express themselves properly in writing, and as the article pointed out, don't have a clue as to the perception this gives off to others.

So, VA2, I'm sorry if you took offense. Those who know me know that I'm a snarky, cynical, and sarcastic guy. No offense taken, rivet head. It just made me ponder why this type of content would be found here, on the Star Wars blogs. I definitely understand how important grammar and spelling is to today's youth, especially in the education sense.
Though, some of us, are adults and way past the school/college/higher education scene.
Been there, done that, thank you very much.
All in all, NO BIG (is that the proper use of that lingo?)
LOL! Ooops...sorry. I meant, laugh out loud.

Wow!! Though my spelling can be pretty bad at times, I still laugh at my friend on AIM. She can't seem to go two sentences without tripping up. My grammar is pretty horrid though, and I tend to make errors that spell check dosn't catch.

Okay, just kidding. I admit I, too, am infuriated with the lack of simple conventions I see online. The other day, I read a particularly amusing Amazon.com review which stated that a book -- and I quote -- "seemed like it were right by a amateur". Not "seemed like it was written by an amateur"; not even "seemed like it were write by an amateur". According to this individual, the book "seemed like it were right by a amateur". You can imagine how inclined I was to trust the literary discernment of this person.

I have a friend who is very well-read and knows her spelling. She recently got a screenname and e-mail account and I haven't seen a properly spelled word out of her for Force-knows-how-long.
Brought to you by the letter Y,

NO excuse for this on a SW board!
Sort of like "Annikin Skywalker"? And "Tattooine" (a typographical error which has, by the way, crept into official lore by virtue of misprint)?
Er, speaking of simple conventions...my underline tool seems to have gone on the fritz... Ooooooops.
But thank you for such a marvelous list! All I've ever needed to know about writing is that it is wrong to ever split an infinitive, and prepositions aren't the things to end sentences with. Oh, and who needs rhetorical questions, anyways?

I just want to say, as someone with dyslexia and all of the difficulties that go along with that, that a difficulty with spelling doesn't necessarily reflect a person's level of intelligence or education. I understand that the entry was in the spirit of fun, but I think it's a common misconception and just wanted to point it out. It is unfortunate because we are judged by what we "say." Sometimes slip ups are a matter of carelessness, but other times they're not - either way the judgment is often the same.
That said,

In the words of Palpatine,
"Ironic..."

Attorneys who regularly write press releases probably have issues larger then their grammar and spelling -- which is probably why they have to write so many press releases.

i didn't mean to take up any more space here rh, but many people have added insightful comments, and in the spirit of writing well , i wanted to clarify something i posted earlier:
1. i think it's great that we can all have a sense of humor about being human - we all mess up from time to time!
2. spelling, grammar, and all that good stuff are only a part of the equation that is written expression. think about it this way: at least 2 of us on here (myself and as1) are dealing with ways of thinking and learning that sometimes make it challenging to keep our mechanics on point while we're trying to get thoughts on paper.
(con't, again ... so sorry in advance!!!)

. . . but the fact remains that we can express ourselves on paper (or on the blogs, as it were). all of us, as far as i've seen, can write in such a way that our thoughts are understood and appreciated, because our words truly convey what we are thinking.
it's this very skill that is missing in the kids that i teach; it frustrates them and me.
the big joke i have with them is that the reason why they're always saying, 'Nah mean?' ('You know what I mean?') and 'Naham' sayin?' ('Know what I'm saying?') is because they really have to check to see if what they said makes sense to anyone else . . .

Bad spelling, bad grammar and the use of "text speak." All of these drive me nuts, especially text speak! I belong to a Doctor Who forum and people are constantly told not to use text speak. It's too hard to read and some of us old timers just don't get it. It's the lazy man's way of communicating, IMHO.
Okay, spelling errors can happen to the best of us, I know. That's why we all need to proof read. It's a valuable skill!
Nice entry.

I can't believe I missed this entry!!
This is a subject close to my heart, I think the art of written communication is dying, so well done sir.
I think I upset another blogger recently when he posted about the 501st members all having jobs - the grammar and punctuation was non-existent so I replied with a question, something along the lines of "Where's your job? McDonalds?"
It didn't go down too well.
