Inspired
When thoughts of space travel cross my mind, as they often do as a Star Wars fan, it really amazes me how far we have come in our effort to explore our universe. It's hard to imagine that only 37 years ago we first touched the moon, bridging a huge gap between ourselves and what was, and is, yet to be discovered.

Often my thoughts turn to what is possible... will we ever have spaceships and craft that are featured in or are similar to those in our Saga? Inter-stellar freighters like the Millenium Falcon, capable of twisting through gravity and flying off the ground in mere seconds? I certainly hope so... it would be an excellent way to show ourselves (and anyone else out there who's... watching...) that we're capable of extraordinary engineering and applying that technology, and continuing to allow our inspirations to come to fruition. Plus it would be extremely cool.

Most of us are aware of the projects that are already taking place with prototypes of Star Warsy and Star Trekky inspired spaceflight projects that really are amazing, but... I wonder if we will really ever accomplish anything so... big. So practical. So close to what we see in the GFFA.

We definitely still have a long way to go, but until then, I will continue to be inspired by what has already been accomplished, and allow myself to dream grand, starry dreams and, well... who knows... perhaps one day mankind will be shuffling their kids off to school through hyperspace.

Any thoughts?

Here is another neat video I saw recently showing the journey a Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) makes as it falls away, along with its companion, from the Space Shuttle Atlantis a few minutes after launch. They fall into a precise area in the Atlantic Ocean and are later refurbished and reused. That must save a few bucks, huh?

Seeing this really reminds me of the escape pod in Ep. 4... or what it would be like to magically float down to Earth, perhaps in one of those dreams that catch us by surprise...

Or nightmares!

Granted, nothing really pops out at you or "jazzes" up your senses, but just try to allow yourself to be "in that place" for a few minutes....

Starting at 3:05 in the video, you can clearly see the launch plume in the distance, and at times see the other booster and its trail of leftover fuel and flame, but what really gets me is the sound... the sound from the mounted camera, what it picks up... sometimes it's eerie and menacing, and sometimes it's hauntingly soothing.

So cool. Thanx for that first one too. It's so much fun to watch this stuff - truly amazing. But at the same time, it's amazing and a little disappointing honestly, what with our highly advanced imaginations (thanks largely to the SW universe and other amazing sc-fi) - looking at the technology we have now seems almost archaic in comparison. LOL - I feel like we should at least have better repulsor lift technology by now :p

I just remembered - I saw an old Twilight Zone episode the other night. In the episode, an astronaut was assigned an experimental operation where he would spend 40 years in space, put into a hibernation state where he wouldn't age of course, and he would travel to the far reaches of the solar system. I LOL'ed when the spaceship counter ticked over from 1987 to 1988 half way through his trip. Funny stuff, and amazing that our ability to travel and space hasn't anywhere near caught up with our imaginations to do so.

Wild stuff. Totally inspiring. Reminds me that there's a movie opening this week (though it may be an extremely limited release called In the Shadow of the Moon. It's supposed to have INCREDIBLE, unseen archival NASA footage... maybe one day, something will remind us to get off our butts and start exploring again.

Good stuff and good blog, S-P. I've always loved the idea of space travel, and have wondered how long it might take to catch up to our imaginations as well!

Well, that is the really important part, right? ;)

Loved this entry, Pitt. I'm a big NASA geek... I watch every take off and landing and I'm shocked, stunned and amazed every time. It never gets old for me. I mean... WE"RE IN SPACE!!!! How totally cool is that? B-)

I'm sure you heard about Luke's lightsaber going up in the shuttle in October... I'll be on total geek overload. :p

BTW, I want an X-wing! :D

You're right. The footage in that video is mesmerizing. Beautiful, and scary and somehow peaceful. You can't look away, even when it just spins, seemingly endlessly, earth, space, light, dark, around and around.
Really a little moment of heirophany. The beauty of the universe that we just don't notice because we're all too busy with our silly little lives...
Thanks for sharing it!

Hi! :D

I couldn't resist, especially after reading some of the other comments...

We can't really blame anyone for what Anakin ended up becoming. No one can "fix" anyone else, not even Yoda. Ultimately, we are all responsible for our own actions. I say this as someone who has been expected to be something for someone else - basically put in the same position as Yoda - and no matter what you do, you can never be exactly what is expected of you. All you can do is offer what you think is right. Yoda was completrely there for Anakin, as were any of the Jedi. Anakin was the one who chose to conceal the truth....

LOL - I think you probably get that I think Yoda's advice was the best that Anakin had gotten. Too bad Anakin was the one who didn't listen. I think anyone can let go, and still be caring, if they put their mind to it. Everything depends on how we see choose to think! The way we see ourselves, the way we see others, the way others see us - that can and does change all the time, whether by our own will or on it's own. When we hang on to ideas and beliefs down to the smallest detail, it leaves little room for other perspectives.

Oops. Ranting :p

That personality thing is such a huge part of it and I think it often gets overlooked...

That's a tough issue, since Qui Gonn sensed Anakin as the Chosen One and introduced the idea, but Anakin decided he wanted to be a Jedi above anything else. Granted he was 9 at the time. The Jedi sensed that there was danger and even refused to train him at first, but ultimately it was clear there wasn't much choice. It was prolly too dangerous not to train him. Any emotional issues in Anakin didn't seem apparent until he was much older, and the Jedi couldn't control Anakin any more than Anakin could control everything. Anakin was broken and noone could fix him but himself!

Alrighty.... let's see here... :D

*pours a double Flaming Dr. Evazan*

No one can "fix" anyone else, not even Yoda.

I didn't really mean that it was Yoda's responsibility to fix Anakin, just that he gave him some really crappy advice...

I disagree! I don't think that Yoda was there for Ani at all, and it seems the other Jedi resented him.... not exactly the kind of people you would want to trust with your deep, dark problems with. I feel that they used him. Also, I think he was too afraid to completely be honest with Yoda for fear of expulsion from the Order... more crappy policies...

Too bad Anakin was the one who didn't listen.

Not a whole lot to listen to, there was.

No prob! :D

They should have listened to their instincts, and not train him. Especially Yoda... 900 years of wisdom...:p Listen, I love Yoda, I really do! But he really screwed this one up... even he said so...

Anakin was broken and noone could fix him but himself!

But sometimes, well... quite often, we all need help, guidance... Anakin sought that out, he made that step, he reached out... and he was let down. He was the Chosen One! You would think that Yoda would've dug a liiiiitle bit deeper and gotten all over his sh** over what was going on, trying to find out... instead, Anakin got advice meant for some run-of- the-mill-Jedi having a case of the Mondays.

Thank you for your comments, Miss Thunder! :D
