 | Who Knows.... |
Hello there. Well, as I sit here on a Saturday night staying home behaving myself, I started thinking about all of this.... this whole blogging thing, and how recently I have been feeling very uninspired to do so. Don't know what it is.... my love for Star Wars is still there, and I still check out this site often (i.e. freakishly two to three times a day) and comment as much as possible and where and when I feel is necessary, but I just really haven't felt the.... need... to blog on a regular basis. I don't know, perhaps it has to do with the fact that I often have trouble putting all of my thoughts down on "paper".... I'm not a writer. I enjoy doing this immensely, whether it's reading and commenting on entries or chatting with folks off-site, but I am rather disappointed with myself. Reading back through others' blogs and looking at all of their older entries, it just seems I'm really slackin'. Bleh.
Many bloggers have at least 50 or so posts by the time they reach their one-year mark, and I only have 17, including this one (the file number at the bottom of this doesn't reflect all of them, one was deleted rather quickly as soon as it posted; when it posted I re-read it and thought "Gee, that isn't what I wanted to say at all!", and so it was deleted and posted a week later, all tidied up). And honestly, some of my entries aren't even full blogs or anything... there are a few that were like, "Hey, check out these funny links!" and such. Maybe it's just me, but I really don't feel motivated to blog every SW thought that pops into my widdle head. And I'm wondering what that means, if it in fact means anything. I just don't feel the need to blah blah blah! everything, there are many things I just wanna keep to myself.
Hmmm, perhaps that is an issue I have.... keeping things to myself, not being open enough.... I'll have to work on that. Netherworld of the Force knows I have enough good friends here who are legendary at blogging....
I sometimes get depressed that quite often there are blogs written by people who are half my age who are twice, if not 10 times more talented than I, and with much more frequency, but what can I say that hasn't already been said - I'm not a writer, never really have been. Tried to keep a journal in high school, mostly because of an English class requirement, but all I could really come up with was "Had a good day" or "Today was... another day". Good grief... how did I ever finish high school?
When I decided to sign up for Hyperspace and start a blog and stop lurking (although that was very brief) and start communicating with all of you (us) insane people, I basically thought that I would do a few entries, comment on a few random posts here and there, and that would be it. I was wrong about both, and my time here has been hilarious, serious, joyous, and life-altering. Really. I started this, and continue to do this for fun, and I suppose I need to remind myself that this is not a contest. And also that there is nothing wrong with only blogging when the mood really strikes me, albeit not that frequently.
Geesh, this is really sounding like a "My First Year Here" post, but Hell, I wasn't really gonna do one.... We'll see.....
So anyway, as I am sitting here reflecting on my time here on the site, with my first anniversary coming up in February, it dawns on me that there are very few people who know that I do this. Many SW online friends of course, including 3 people from here I have met IRL, but no one else! My sister knows that I chat with people online, and I sorta told my mother that I do (she said, "Oh.... that's... neat..." God love her), but that's it. They don't know that it has anything to do with SW, or that I have a blog on the Official Star Wars website for the whole galaxy, or that I've met people from the internetz, just that I "talk" to people online. And that's it as far as IRL is concerned. No non-sw.com friends. No co-workers. Nobody!
I like it like that, too. No complaints here, I really like the fact that I have this very cool thing I do with very cool people, and it's sorta my own little secret. Besides, I don't want anyone I know in my real-world life to come "looking for me" here. Do ya know what I mean?!
Now, of course we all have our different thing that we do as far as this is concerned, and have our own "glitches" ( Reality Bites Alert!), and that is so very cool as well. Many of us have friends, children, and other close people in our lives with whom we not only share our love for SW, but also our blogs. I really think that's great... and brave, after all... it can get really personal in here!
Perhaps in the future I will decide to share this wild lovely world with those I know... my friends and family... but for now, I'm content with only being who they see in front of them, and not Sarlacc-Pitt.
SO, what I really wanna know is....
Who knows that you do this? And why?
And how?
And where?
What?

Yep me too. Lately I feel everything has already been said or analyzed. Sometimes I get an idea to blog here but it quickly slips away..
Who knows that you do this? And why?
My daughters do. The youngest one doesn't mind. She feels it keeps me happy and that's her desire. Keep Mommy happy. But the oldest daughter is kinda jealous of my SW passion, collection and friends. She says I should get out and meet "REAL" people. And nevermind her thoughts on my friends at "The Spew". Where do I meet real people who feel about SW the way I do???? Haven't met one "real" person yet. Cont.

17, are you serious!?!
My one year was up last November, and I'm up to 6, that's right, 6 blogs. Not even a good 66, mind you.
"Life is what happens when you're busy making plans." - John Lennon, I think. For me, the SW blogosphere is a luxury. I enjoy coming here just for the reasons you listed. And I also wanted to "get in" on the writing side, but life is busy.
However, as I once commented to K-fan- may he return someday-
Writers write for themselves - that's all. When you want to write a blog, you will, and we'll all enjoy reading it, but it's your blog, and it's as long as you're happy with it, it's just as it should be.

But commenters write in response to the author, so I should have the courtesy...
Who knows that you do this? And why?
My wife and kids. Probably they think it's just part of the overall SW obsession.
And how?
I use a computer.
And where?
In my basement. Hey, at least it's my basement, not in my parents' house.
What?

I think we all go through highs and lows in our blogging. At least twice, I've dramatically decided I'm done with blogging forever. And then I'm back. So, now I am dramatically vow to make no more dramatic vows. It's probably best to just write something when you feel the urge and not sweat it in the meantime.
As for who knows, my wife is well aware that I have the blog. And my whole family knows I'm insane in the Star Wars membrane, but don't really know about the blog part.

I've gone through spells where I just don't feel like blogging. and that's okay. We all have those times.

Freakishly??? Oh jeepers, you don't want to know how many times I check!
I was really nervous when I started a blog & told my roomies. Later I kinda regretted letting them in on my special "secret" life, because it had become so much more than "talking on the internet" and I knew they simply couldn't understand that. I don't want to explain or feel like I'm being judged, so while just about everyone I meet knows I'm a huge SW fan, but I tend to keep my blogging between me and the other super nerds.

I had to tell my mom a few months into it, because I went to meet Brookieloo while the two of us were in NYC. "Hey, mom? I have this friend..." Luckily, she was very understanding & LOVED briefly meeting Brook. Then when bloggers kept showing up for my senior recital, she figured out that these people are amazing & are truly great friends.
As for YOU, just keep doing what you're doing. I love reading your entries, whenever you feel inspired to write them.

My family knows I blog. My daughter very lovingly tells her friends I'm "geeking" Which is true. A couple of my co-workers know I blog, but not my boss, she thinks the whole "Star Wars business" is crazy and rolls her eyes whenever it's mentioned.
So I blog in my room, on my computer that's nestled in the corner surrounded by my Star Wars posters.
Why? Because it's good therapy for when real life gets me down.
How? ***shrugs*** I dunno. Mostly if I have questions about something.
What? Mostly randomness.

Who knows that you do this? And why?
Everybody I meet, because I tell them.
And I do it because I have an unhealthy need to be liked.
And how?
I usually blog in the morning, before anyone else is out of bed, so that I don't get accused of ignoring my wife (too much).
And where?
Anywhere that has a computer. Usually in my office, or from someone else's PC, or from the one at school, or from i-phones in Apple stores...
Hell, I have a problem.
What?

What who?
Happy early blogiversary!
Hmmmm. A lot of people I know IRL know that I am active at the official site, but not so many really understand the depth of what I do here. Some of my friends aren't very tech savvy, so to most, the idea of blogging at all is strange enough, never mind a Star Wars-centric blog. As for my parents and their generation, forgetta'bout even trying to start explaining.
My blogging habits are pretty darn sporadic.

Wow, I've been here for 2 years in May. Time has sure flown by!
Who knows that you do this? And why?
My parents and an equally Star Wars obsessed cousin. I've been trying to get him to write on the blogs for about a year, but he hasn't joined yet. Why? Because I like telling people that I'm part of an "elite" club.
I haven't met anyone from the blogs in real life, or I guess I should say "IRL". But I know several live in Texas.
As for the fact that you've only written 17 blogs in one year, that's perfectly fine. Since December 2006 I haven't been really consistent in my blog writing, but everyone here recognizes me....I hope.
I hope you stick around for another 5 years!

Who knows that you do this? And why?
My kids know, but they have been sworn to secrecy. My hubby knows too but would chose to be encased in carbonite before he would ever admit to anyone that his wife is a blogger of any sort, especially a SW blogger.
And how?
With my toes and sometimes my nose.
And where?
Now you are getting a little personal, don't cha' think?

Hey Pitt!!
Don't worry about how many entries you have - it's really not the quantity that counts, but the quality. I'm going to be celebrating my two-year anniversary in April, and I'm only on blog #35. Some people get the "blog itch" more often than others, but it's all about what inspires you. My persoanl advice is don't just blog because you feel like you have to blog. It takes all the fun out of it! Make it meaningful to you - yes, it's a great way to connect, but you can still do that by commenting on others' entries if you don't have anything you really want to communicate at that point. Just MHO!!!

now, to answer your other questions...
Who knows that you do this? And why?
All of the "important" people in my life They know I do it because I enjoy it; it's a way to connect with those who shre my love of SW, to express who I am and to just have fun! It's very theraputic to me
And how?
I get an idea - an inspiration - that pops into my head from a variety of sources, then I just sit down and let go. Sometimes I save drafts, other times I don't. Most of the time its spur-of-the-moment.
And where?
Mostly at home, but sometimes at work during my lunch *sssh!*

As for who knows I do this... everyone I know knows I do this. Most think it's cool... my Dad rolls his eyes... Some just smile and nod at the crazy person...
Most of my entries are actually last minute things. I sit down not knowing always where it'll go and before I know it I've written a blog! Funny thing is, these are always my most popular ones. Go figure.

Why? I tell most everybody 'cause that makes it easier to hit 'em up for jokes!
And how?
For me, it's nothing less of an addiction. I don't pretend to have control anymore.

I am approaching my two year anniversary of blogging (early May), and I am just shy of 40 entires. When I first started blogging, I had much more to say, so I did it with much more frequency than I do currently. Like you and many others, I have ideas but just cannot always articulate them into something that makes sense. Also, real life has a way of getting in the way of things sometimes...and that includes my participation here as well.

Now...on to your questions
Who knows that you do this? And why?
My family, close friends, and many of my co-workers. I usually only tell people on a "need-to-know" basis because I do get those looks that indicate people think I'm a bit crazy (especially so when they find out I do costuming as well ) My family supports me, in a way...and they know how much this has changed me...helped me to open up to new possibilities and opportunities.
And how?
Just whenever I get a thought in my head or when something inspires me to write.
And where?
Pretty much just at home...because work has the site blocked

It still amazes me how close knit this not-so-little group has become. I guess that's the purpose of blogs-when you pour out your soul on paper (internet paper, in this case) you share a bit of your soul with others. If others pour out their souls with you, the souls seem to converge. That's what this site is: A large mass of intertwined souls, with the love of Star Wars as the thread that holds them all together.
And I tend to share my soul at three in the morning, when there's no one around

GREAT questions & thoughts bud.
while reading this I really had to stop and THINK: who DOES know what I do here?
I realized that while quite a few people i KNOW know that I blog here, that very few if ANY of them have ever actually shown any interest in it.
For example, my wife knows what I do, she see's me taking pics for my Toy Tours etc. all the time, but to this day she has never even expressed the slightest interest in READING them.
My daughter, my dad, several co-workers as well, same story. YES, they know I blog, NO they dont FOLLOW my blog.

BUT, just like I dont write my blogs for "fortune & glory" here, I dont write my blogs for THEM either. i write them for ME....and yeah I hope others like them and its a nice plus when some do.
as for HOW: with the exception of my toy tours, you may notice most of my other blogs are usually attached to what someone else may be doing; song parodies etc. were done to fit in with Themed Blog Weeks for example. Ive also commented on pop culture, the news, and whatever bit of nonsense my occasionally pop in my head.
the trick to blogging is simply blog what you FEEL. Dont overthink them and dont rush them.
and whether your at 6, 17, 66 or 300, you're blogs will be meaningful, fun and entertaining to the most important person: YOU.

Excellent thoughts here S-P. I'm like you, I was on the site before becoming a Hyperspace member and I would leave comments, but there was something nagging at me that wanted to get my own thoughts and inspirations about SW and life in general out there for all to see. I'll usually get a thought about SW or related matters and jot a few notes down and let my mind wander and expand. It can be late at night, or while I'm working, or reading a book, watching TV ... almost anything! But I do like to sit at the computer in my quiet environment of home and let my thoughts percplate to the keyboard once inspired by an idea.
