Leaning to the Side
Wow, long time no write. It's been so busy first with Thanksgiving, then finals in school, and finally the holiday season. I kept meaning to write but it kept getting pushed further and further back as more pressing instances arose.

I met a girl a couple of weeks ago who is a huge Star Wars fan and it completely surprised me. I guess I didn't expect her to be a big fan of the movies or the whole universe. Eventually I got to finding out that she is a HUGE fan of Boba Fett and is working on a costume so that she can join the 501st Legion. We discussed how I am working on my prequel Jedi Knight costume so I can possibly join the Rebel Legion... which got me to thinking a random thought: what attracts us to certain characters in the Star Wars universe?

I am working on a prequel Jedi Knight costume, but more specifically one that looks very similar to Qui-Gon Jinn's. I love Qui-Gon. I think if he had not died in The Phantom Menace, Anakin's outcome as a person would have been quite different. Nothing against Obi-Wan because I do believe that Obi-Wan did the best he could. But Anakin had a natural trust for Qui-Gon. I believe Qui-Gon was wise though he did not always follow the Jedi Council. I liked his patience and love for those around him. He was slightly rebellious but I think he still weighed all his decisions carefully. Why am I more attracted to a character like Qui-Gon Jinn?

With that thought, I wondered why my friend was more inclined to lean towards Boba Fett. She seems to be more of a stable, in control, calm person. And Boba Fett definitely lives on the edge of his seat.

At first I thought that perhaps the good people tend to lean towards the antagonists (Sith, Bounty Hunters, Assassins, Empire, etc.) because they hold everything that they are not and people with bad tendencies lean towards the protagonists (Jedi, Rebellion, etc.). It seemed to make sense: you are attracted to your opposite.

Yet the more I thought about it... it just doesn't make sense. There are times when I would love to step into a ruthless assassin's skin for a day or two and shed the Jedi identity that I love so much. To have a costume that is crazily complicated and different and says "Don't mess with me" as opposed to the (at times) boring jedi outfit.

In the end, for me, I realized that the reason why I love Qui-Gon and the Jedi is because they are what I always aspire to be, and maybe I will never be like them. Like I said in a previous blog, I don't have the temperament to be a Jedi. I'd fit in better in Jabba's palace or another place with a bunch of misfits. But that is why I am attracted to the Jedi. They are what I will never be.

Great blog! I can see why you both would be attracted to the characters you chose.

I think reasons for the attraction of Boba Fett include: 1) the cool gear he has; 2) reputation (the best bounty hunter in the galaxy); 3) that he is cunning enough to track down and defeat Jedi; and 4) he is exceptionally skilled in combat.

I have many of my own favorites, and it is difficult to say why they rank the way they do. There are so many factors.

Qui-Gon is one of my favorite characters. I love his personality. He's confident, but willing to stray from the beaten Jedi path. And I love his fighting style. Liam Neeson was just great in TPM.

Great blog! I agree that some of the attraction that characters have is they embody things that we aspire to become. I love Boba Fett, to me he is the classic mystery man, people fear him, you never know what he is going to do, etc (plus he is super cool). I also like the the Jedi as well, strong principles, fearless. Regardless the attraction is some connection - something about the character we can identify with.

I agree with you about Qui-Gon - had he trained Ani, Ani would have turned out differently. Obi-Wan did do the best he could, but Qui-Gon thought more "out of the box", and that was what Ani needed.

I like various characters for various reasons. I identify with the Jedi because I believe in good, and I believe the Sith were evil. But I also like Darth Maul...he's just mysterious and so COOL! It doesn't mean I identify with his philosophies, I just think he kicks butt. :D

We like characters who are both similar and the opposite of us. Similar because we relate to their motivations and emotions. Opposite (for me, the Sith) because we can explore darker aspects "safely"...we can watch the movies and read the books, but it doesn't mean we'll ACT like them. (Did that make sense??)

Good blog!

Great blog, acegrl. I think we all like many of the characters for various reasons ... their look, their personality, their popularity and showing some characteristics we can identify with. I've always liked Luke's character based on his growth and understanding of the Force as the saga goes on. But when the PT came around I also enjoyed watching and listening to Qui-Gon as well ... he just seemed to be the embodiment of what a respectful and respectable Jedi and citizen should be.
again, great blog.

Oh it totally makes sense. I love watching the movies and "exploring darker aspects safely."

Me too, Darth Hiram. I love Luke. Along with Oola, he is hands down my favorite character of the original trilogy. You can see him grow through the trilogy, like you said, and it's so nice to watch.

And thanks, guys, for all the comments on Boba Fett. Though he's never really held too much attraction for me, I can understand where you're coming from.

They are what I will never be.
That is so great and so true! What is it about humans: we always wish we were someone else! I'm a good girl at heart, but there are sometimes when I would just LOVE to be a Sith! Cool, dangerous, bad, tough, powerful.... It sounds like so much more fun than my boring bookworm self! ;)
