Irony of Young Anakin
Once again, when Spike TV is showing a Star Wars marathon and I had Phantom Menace on in the background the other night.

I was actually paying attention during the scene in the Skywalker's dining room.

Qui-Gon is talking to Anakin about Jedi.

Anakin remarks about Qui-Gon's "laser sword" and that only Jedi carry one. Qui-Gon suggests that maybe he killed the Jedi and took it.

Anakin responds that Jedi can't be killed.

Ironic that the being who grew up to kill more Jedi than anyone else thought that Jedi couldn't be killed. At the same time I was being impressed with GL having that level of foreshadowing, I also found myself thinking, how ironic that the young boy who naively thought Jedi can't be killed becomes the monster that kills more Jedi than any one else in the galaxy.

I'm not a big fan of the Prequels, but I love that part. I especially like Qui-Gon's response: "I wish that were so." When I saw that in the theaters I had a tear in my eye.

You're right, that was good foreshadowing on GL's part. In the moment of 1999 I simply recalled Obi-Wan and what his fate would be, I wasn't thinking about what would come next.

Let's not forget that he was a cute, innocent boy, not knowing beyond the world before him.

He later becomes a horribly mutilated, murderous a-hole who has nearly the entire galaxy at his disposal.

Wow--you're absolutely right, that moment carries so much weight. It tells us a little something about Jedi, and about how the rest of the galaxy thinks of Jedi, and foreshadows Qui-Gon's death, and has the nice ironic twist you point out because Anakin will go on to kill so many Jedi as Vader.

Thanks for pointing this out! :)

I guess one would call it ironic. But for me, Anakin's story is a reminder that just about anyone is capable of taking such a road in life. Anyone - given the right circumstances or emotional button pushed - can give in to the evil that will always rest within.
