I would advise you, if you haven't played the first
Knights of the Old Republic video game to stop what you're doing and go play it. I don't care if you have to go upgrade your PC or purchase an Xbox. If you've never played a video game before in your life then this is worth it. Arguably one of the best Star Wars experiences in the entire Star Wars universe.
Read no further. You've been warned.
Now, for anyone who knows the secret you have to agree with me on this one. I'm twenty-five years old and unfortunately wasn't old enough to feel the impact of Darth Vader's revelation in
Empire Strikes Back.
I'd like to think that I felt it when I played
Knights of the Old Republic. The emotional rollercoaster, the lightning fast thoughts of realization, denial and immediate acceptance of what I was seeing was indescribable.
When you began to have those flashbacks and Bastilla spoke of turning their enemy to her own cause... you had to be floored... and even though you knew the truth moments before you saw the mask come off you had to be thinking that it was impossible.
So when I read that
Insider was going to have a "Top 20" of the EU I knew that when I thought of Star Wars and all of the books... even moments from the movies... the most impactful memory was that of Revan taking his mask off to show... me.
Now, I don't fault the list for some moments... because there are quite a few moments that were cool. And I knew from the start that it likely wouldn't make #1... but to not even be on the list?
Fey'lya's death?
Luke vs. Lumiya?
The death of General Madine?
Or the controversy of Vader remembering C3PO?
There are others that could have easily been skipped on that list, but these four are quick throw-aways. You can't look at those and think anything but "... meh... cool... but top 20?"
So one of the greatest momements in Star Wars got bypassed so that we could be reminded that Ton Phanan died... cool? Sure... but better than finding out that I am Revan? Not even close.
Bad
Insider. NO!
