I just couldn't help but laugh and cheer.
See, almost a year ago, I received my Master's degree in library science. I knew it was the right career for me when I took the first class. I enjoy doing and look forward to a great career. One element to librarianship I have been interested in was the passing of skills to get patrons to better understand the handling of information. While the Internet has done some great and exciting (and will continue to do so) things for information distribution, it's also a double edged sword. Servers crash, the power goes out and all the information we hoped to have for the price of a few keystrokes is gone.
So imagine my nerdish glee when I came upon a section in
Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Force Heretic II: Refugee. Luke, Mara, Danni, Jacen and several Imperial officers have landed on a Chiss homeworld during their search for the living planet Zonama Sekot. As a measure of good faith, the Chiss have allowed our heroes access to their library (barring a strict time limit) in order to aid their search. Imagine young Jacen's surprise upon the discovery that the Chiss have an archive entirely filled with handwritten books! The librarian, Tris, informed our friends that due to ice storms and other hazards, they felt it important to keep printed records around! Granted, the search for Zonama Sekot will take even longer, but hey, the Chiss really know the value of information. You've gotta love them for that! I wonder what Library 2.0 features the Chiss employ for their library. I would love to be a part of their Friends of the Library group! XD
