Nothing has influenced me more in my life to pursue a future in the world of Sound Design for film than that of Star Wars. Almost twenty years ago as a child while wathing A New Hope for the first time, the thing that most stood out to me was the distinct beeps and whistles of Artoo. I fell in love with them. Several years later, when we got our first surround sound reciever, The Star Wars Trilogy was the first thing played on it to experince the rumble of the Millenium Falcon, or the hum of a Lightsaber in all it's hi-fidelity glory. It was the Star Wars films that really opened up my ears to the world of sound in film.
Now, as the circle is completed tonight (which is just 4 hours away as I write this), I will finally get to listen and hear the final sounds that have shaped my interests. I'm almost as excited about how the final film will sound as much as I am awaiting the birth of Vader and the Twins. Ben Burtt is clearly a Master, as is all the team over at Skywalker Sound. I'm also extremely excited to hear Supervising Sound Editor Matt Wood voice the part of Grievous. I can't imagine any greater joy for a sound person than to get to put your own voice into such a primary element...a villian.
This blog will pay tribute to the sound of the Star Wars Saga. In future entrys I will explore some of my favorite sounds and am also very excited to hear what are some of yours. Please contact me with any favorites or memories of yours with the Sounds of Star Wars.
