Now I Remember Why I Don't Start a New Star Wars Collection...
Don't let the title of this blog decieve you. I do have a modest Star Wars collection going. I've previously mentioned parts of it in previous blogs. I have dozens of novels and comics. I have about 7 or 8 Star Wars lego models. I have Darth Tater and some of the other Mr. Potato Head figures. My collection sports a few miniature replica light sabers. I have an original Type A movie poster for the original Star Wars signed by most of the cast of the film. In addition to all of that, I have other knick-knacks related to Star Wars that I'm holding on to.

However, I haven't fully dove into expanding my Star Wars collection. I've been asking myself why not for a few months now. One objection: money. It can get expensive to collect Star Wars stuff. However, that can be said of most hobbies and collections. Objection two: space. All that stuff can take up a ton of room. Again, most collections take up space, and I do have an office I could store things in.

So, why don't I take it up again? What is keeping me back? This has been nagging at me for a while.

Then I opened some boxes I had been keeping in storage from a recent move. Mystery solved.

Here is the long explanation: about 15-18 years ago, I went on a small vacation. The location is not important. I wanted a small souvenir, and after spending some time at a gift shop, I settled on a shot glass that had some impressive painting and etching. I wish I had a photo account set up so that I could post a picture of it.

A few months later, I went to the Indianapolis 500. Its a fun event and should you ever get the chance to catch the race in person, you should do so, just once. Again, I wanted a small souvenir (and not a t-shirt or cap), and I found a nice shot glass with a race car engraved in it.

You can probably see where this is going. I started collecting shot glasses from places I travelled or events I attended. I was picky, and I wouldn't settle for poor quality. The collection was truly mine--everything was picked by me. It didn't take up much space, cost very much, or take that much time to maintain.

Then the inevitable happened: I started getting shot glasses as gifts. Word of my collection got out. Every time friends or family went on a trip or vacation, or attended some event, I got a shot glass.

Don't get me wrong, I always appreciated the gesture. That people would think of me on their vacations and trips and think to pick up a gift was truly appreciated.

However, my collection took on a life of its own. I probably had about fifteen shot glasses in my little collection from my own travels when things started. Within two years, my collection was over 100 shot glasses and growing. Then I started getting pilsner glasses, mugs, and other glassware. Over 75% of my collection was gifts from well-meaning friends and family. The overall quality of the collection declined. The amount of space it took up blossomed exponentially.

When I moved into my last house, I packed most of my shot glasses away carefully in boxes. I kept a few out. I kind of let the word get out that my collection was really complete, and then I just stopped adding to it all together. The collection sat in boxes for most of eight years. When I moved to my new house, the boxes went into storage unopened or checked. I had to clean out the storage space a couple of weeks ago and moved all boxes to my garage.

I was cleaning out some space in the garage yesterday and decided to open a few boxes to check the contents. I came upon the collection for the first time in about nine years. Most of the glasses didn't mean anything to me. I couldn't tell you where they were from or who gave them to me. The ones I collected provided some fond memories though.

I'm not the type of collector that has to have everything. I like my collection to be a bit more personal and hand picked. Part of the hobby of collecting, for me, is the time spent in researching and selecting. By keeping my collection small and only really telling a select few about things I'd like to add to it, I've maintained much more control.

I suppose in some ways my little essay (and by "little" I mean long manifesto on collecting) here is contradictory. One thing is for certain, I'm trying to find a local collector or charity that will accept about 80 shot glasses...its slow going so far.

May the Force be with You!

Well, I made it all the way through.... no prob! :D

I totally understand where you're coming from when you mention how you want everything you collect to be be special and mean something and to be carefully chosen. I do that with my modest SW collection, and it just makes it that much more meaningful to me. In a way, unless you have unlimited space and funds, you sorta have to because there is SO much SW stuff out there. I feel better knowing that I have only the things I really like, versus having every single item in a line just to have it.

Nice blog!

Nice blog!

Thanks. I almost didn't write this blog because I thought it might be off-putting to those that do try to complete entire sets. I have no problem with that at all. My parents have a few boxes of various trading card collections in their basement from when I used to try and complete entire sets of trading cards.

However, over the last decade or so, my collections have taken on more of a focus and theme. More often than not, I don't aim to complete entire sets unless every element of a set appeals to me.

Hey, I made it through your blog too...:^)

I was going to suggest that there is a Star Wars set of shot glasses you can order and add to your collection. I've seen them and they are beautiful. But, this suggestion was killed after you mentioned that you are trying to get rid of your shot glasses. BTW, try selling them on eBay. ;)

Anyhoo, I can tell you this...Collecting Star Wars toys is a lot different than collecting shot glasses. Will there still be a storage issue? Absolutely (I'm having a storage issue now). Will there still be a cash flow issue? Absolutely. Does any of this matter? Heck no. All I can say is that it's worth it. I feel like a kid every time I buy a new toy. :D

Looooooooonnnnnnggggg, but good blog. ;)

One objection: money... Objection two: space. ...

Fortunately, for me, my wife is very understanding. She feels there are far worse habits to devote my money towards, so she supports my spending and the space we loose (it is a modest collection the house is small ;)). My spending is in control, in my opinion, I keep myself to items that carry personal connection to Star Wars subjects I really like. I have always felt that budgets should be loose enough so you can enjoy the money you work hard to earn. Space is a huge problem, but I picked up some tricks from other bloggers. I invested in some money clear acrylic blocks to get multiple rows of figures, etc.

Oh yeah, it sure is. My wife was just commenting about my two biggest reactions to gifts being the Star Wars lego set I got and the Star Wars Pop-Up book.

Fortunately, for me, my wife is very understanding. She feels there are far worse habits to devote my money towards.

I hear that. My wife really isn't an issue. In fact, she ends up buying most of the Star Wars stuff I have. However, lack of space is an issue. With a couple of kids in the house, space is a premium.

And really, neither of those issues are holding me back.

I'm impressed if anyone makes it all the way through.

Well, I kinda cheated and didn't read all of it.

I mainly collect (if you can even call it collecting) Star Wars figure. The only problem is that they're about 6 dollars a figure. I have the money to spare, but I don't know if that's what I want to spend it on.

Back from around 1998-2003 I was working on a huge 1/64th scale NASCAR die-cast collection. Of course, back in 1998, they only cost a mere 98 cents. Nowadays they cost 5 dollars.

Of course, having a brother and still being young myself, I enjoy playing with the Star Wars figures rather than saving them in the boxes. Well, I gotta go play some Lego Complete Saga now.

MTFBWY! God bless!

I've actually found that having a limited amount of money for Star Wars toys/collectibles is a good thing. It makes me really appreciate what I do have and not constantly obsess about what to get next. And I would definitely obsess if I had the money to do so.

Not too long. Good blog length, actually!

And a hilarious story. I love how folks started to get you mugs and whatnot. But you're in good shape if you play a drinking game with 100 friends!

I totally get where you are coming from. its one thing to collect, its another to collect stuff that has no real MEANING to you.

Hey, if it doesnt move or interest you, DONT buy it. Its that simple really.

some people collect a LOT of stuff...like me :D.....others, not so much.

the most important thing is ENJOYING the hobby, otherwise its a waste of money.

GREAT blog BW, well done. :)
