The Empire Strikes Back Poster
Yesterday, I had to think of something to blog about....today, something just fell in my lap.

I got an email from my wife early this morning. She needed help. Two of the "geeks," as she lovingly referred to them, were arguing over what was the Empire Strikes Back movie poster.

One of them argued that the "Gone With the Wind" Poster was the Movie Poster.

The other was arguing that the Darth Vader Helmet Poster was it.

Point is, the argument was driving her crazy, and she asked me to solve the debate. I knew in fact that both poster were used by the studio to promote The Empire Strikes Back, and both were issued in 1980. Don't ask me how I know, but I remember reading that somewhere.

So, I sent her the information I had, and threw in some extra tidbits (some of which I had to confirm with a little extra research). Since I had bothered to put that together, I thought I'd share it here.

"The Gone With the Wind" poster was named such based on its resemblance to the poster from, well, Gone With the Wind. In fact, it was used as a model by the artist. The poster was pulled because Billy Dee Williams was upset that although he was billed as an actor in the movie, he didn't appear on the poster. The "Gone With the Wind" poster was replaced by a similar poster that features more characters and elements. Collectors tend to favor the original poster because copies of it are a little more rare.

There was also a teaser poster that didn't enjoy nearly as much success. I kind of like it. It has a decades old feel to it. That could be just because of the quality of the image that I found.

Of course, Empire Strikes Back has had numerous other posters since its release. I'm especially fond of the Special Edition release poster. I love how Vader and the Emporer are featured with the rest of the tools of the Imperial machine.

There is also this poster from what I believe is the DVD release. This isn't really a movie poster as it lacks the credits that are usually posted along the bottom. In my opinion, it isn't nearly as appealling as the others. It is too clean and crisp. The others really offered a...I don't k now...sense of adventure, if you catch my drift.

Anyway, there are other stories out there about these posters. I found it fascinating that even the posters in Star Wars have a backstory and a lore all their own.

I would have to say my favorite poster out of all of those is the Gone with the Wind one. I have to agree with you on the last one; it's my least favorite out of the bunch. See, when I think of ESB and posters, I aways think of the Gone with the Wind one.

Impressive disclosure...:^O

My fav is Gone with the Wind. And everything you've said above is true to the best of your research without any endorsement nor any assistance received by Lucasfilms. :^O

Loved the history rundown. ;)
